👶🍼 I'm a total beginner shrimp keeper, so I appreciate your excellent info! I started keeping shrimp BY ACCIDENT when I found three little shrimp were included in a bag of ember tetras I'd just bought. Knowing nothing about shrimp, I did some quick research, then hobbled together a small "shrimp home" with items leftover from my fish tanks. Surprisingly, those shrimp lasted a month and even seemed to thrive. Then I was hooked! Next, I set up a 2.5 gallon tank with all the necessary features. Then, I bought a few more shrimp from Petco. Yes, the shrimp are low quality, but also cheap and a great way to learn for a beginner. Now, I'm setting up a 5 gallon tank because one of the shrimp turned out to be berried! I also bought the "Shrimp Baby" food, which turned out to work GREAT for my Sterbai cory fry! They have such tiny mouths, and that powder is small enough for even newly hatched fry. Thank you for your great educational content!

Thanks for the sub and I'm glad you found the video helpful! Give your shrimp time as they may be acclimating to their tank still. The one key takeaway when it comes to shrimp breeding is being patient.

Thanks for the video, I am not sure about substrate though, can I use aquarium soil only or what do you recommend, thanks brother
@shrimplycanadian
@shrimplycanadian Ай бұрын
You can as long as it does not alter your water parameters that much. Fluval Biostratum for example works but aquasoils are also more expensive than regular inert substrates. Also, depending on what colour shrimp you're going with, you want to get the appropriate shading of substrate. Reds, Yellows and Oranges will stand out on a dark substrate while Black, Blues and Green shrimp will stand out more on a light substrate. Check this link out for some substrate choices that I've used in the past: amzn.to/4ezp9uH

We got some cherry and blue shrimps for my nano tank. After about 8 weeks I noticed baby shrimp in the tank, fun! If we end up,with too many I guess I’ll contact the store we got them from and see if they would take any extras ?

You can try trading them in for credit or even try selling them online to people looking to buy shrimp.

How much more do their lifespans get reduced I have my tank at 78 degrees since my tank came with a pre set heater, and if I got a new heater and lowered the temp would it kill any shrimp or fish if I did drop the temperature to like 76 or 75.
@shrimplycanadian
@shrimplycanadian 2 ай бұрын
If you plan to reduce your temperature, reduce it by 1 degree a day so that your inhabitants get used to the change. At 78°F, Neocaridina shrimp tend to have slightly increased metabolic rates. This can lead to them growing, maturing, and reproducing faster, but it may also slightly shorten their lifespan compared to keeping them at 75°F, where their metabolism would be slower. While the exact difference is hard to quantify, it's possible that at 78°F, their lifespan could be reduced by a few months compared to 75°F.

Hey Andy! do you use fertilizer? What do you recommend that is easily available in Canada?
@shrimplycanadian
@shrimplycanadian 2 ай бұрын
The only thing I use in my substrate is Fluval Biostratum and Seachem or API Root Tabs. As for liquid fertilizers, I use ThriveS All in One Liquid Fertilizer which is 100% shrimp safe as it does not contain any trace amounts of copper. Refer to this link for more information: amzn.to/3BH6ijw

I recently bought six red cherry shrimps and two of the females were already berried... Do the eggs change colour when they are due to hatch? They are currently yellow.
@shrimplycanadian
@shrimplycanadian Жыл бұрын
Congratulations! You should have shrimplets soon. Eggs are usually yellow and should stay that way. As the babies hatch before they are released, they will be transparent in colour and will develop their colour over time. In the 4th stage, there should be a clip of a mom giving birth to a transparent baby shrimp.

My shrimp had eggs and now they are gone…. Could they have hatched somewhere and I don’t see them or could the eggs have been dissolved by the mother? I have nothing in the tank except shrimp and a few other very small snails. I’m devastated bc we were so excited when we saw the eggs under her tail and now, about 2.5 weeks since seeing them, there appears to be nothing under her tail anymore.
@shrimplycanadian
@shrimplycanadian 3 ай бұрын
Once the female has given birth, the newborn shrimp stay in one place for a few weeks. Slowly they will come out of hiding so keep an eye out for little babies. There are times also where the female may drop her eggs and nothing will hatch. If you do not see any babies in the next few weeks, this probably could have happened.

@@shrimplycanadian I love them! The 1st "shrimp" I ever kept were brineshrimp... And It started because I put a Seamonkey kit on my Amazon wishlist. When I failed at having them work. One of my friends who is a fishkeeper helped me and sent me some eggs and spirulina for them. I've had my colony going for almost 8 months now. I figured time to try actual shrimp. Again my fish keeping friend came to my aid! However I didn't realize I needed to drop acclimate my shrimp (that's probably what happened to most of them). He did suggest getting some locally from my fish club and I found what people call "culls" . Even the "culls" or lower quality shrimp need love too 😀

Sometimes these shrimp can breed right away, sometimes it can take up to 3 months as they may need to get used to your tank's conditions. Patience is usually the key here. What you can do also to ensure they breed properly is to feed them protein heavy foods like frozen bloodworms for example. Also, when it comes to sexing shrimp, check this video out: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iHyzpaqNbLBnn5Ysi=KkxzocY8WDR7TuCN

Thanks 😊 The food I feed them ranges. Aside from the left over fish food (powdered), they also eat Hikari Algae Wafers, GlasGarten Shrimp Dinner, Mineral Junkie, BacterAe, Shrimp Baby and nano banquet blocks by ZooMed. I alternate accordingly. What I'll do is make a full video, maybe for this coming Friday on all of this.

Do you also have Caridina Shrimp? 🦐 I could not keep them alive. I've only been housing these guys for about a year. They are a lot of work 😄 Thank you for your videos. Have a great day !!
