During the neoclassical period in the second half of the eighteenth century in France, period decoration became cooler, more academic, and acquired an architectural attitude. Walls were articulated by pilasters or columns, ceilings were coffered, quite often by means of illusionistic painting and decor came to consist more of sculpture than of painting. Parquet floors or marble laid in lozenge patterns were preferred with black and white popular. Mirrors covered walls, and wallpapers printed by Reveillon became fashionable. www.thecultureconcept.com/circle/
