An unpopular Democrat president who was waging an unpopular war which he was primarily responsible for refused to run for reelection since the polls showed he was likely going to lose. Instead, his Vice President (after a political challenge from Robert F. Kennedy was eliminated) was selected as the nominee, but loses the election in part because the Republican rival, who had lost his previous run for the White House, announces he has a plan to end the war, although he is not forthcoming on the details of his plan. The Republican candidate's successful campaign was hailed as the comeback of the century since his political career had been written off as finished after he lost his previous bid for the White House, although there were allegations, probably true, that his Democratic opponent had stolen that election with fraudulent votes. The year was 1968, the unpopular US president was Lyndon Johnson, his Vice President was Hubert Humphrey, the eliminated challenger in the Democratic Party primaries was Robert F. Kennedy, Sr., and the victorious Republican opponent was Richard Nixon whose career was thought to be over after he lost his presidential bid to John Kennedy in the controversial election of 1960.

Sunk cost fallacy and the gambler's mentality. Instead of paying off the loan shark, lets make one more all in gamble, and if I win I can pay off the loan shark and win big myself.

The EU follows the dictates of the US; therefore, in many ways, European nations had no other choice but to support Ukraine, impose sanctions, etc.

Perhaps the chatter in the west on peace agreements can continue the next 6 months, but Russia will continue to advance because they have been left no other choice.

Better BRICS than the EU, if Scotland joins BRICS, I'd move 40 miles North & become a full fledged Scotsman.

BRICS is a joke. A single currency alternative to the dollar is such a funny concept , has not been achieved in 15 years. China and India have territorial disputes. You are so ignorant, better stay silent and read a book.

When Trump was campaigning, one could imagine that his excesses had an electoral goal. Now that he is elected, he no longer needs to show off. He is a head of state and we should take his words very seriously. In other words, when he talks about Canada, Greenland and Panama, it is the President of the United States who is speaking. We must not forget that there is a constant in American politics and this constant is world domination. If the case is lost in Ukraine, there is a way to reaffirm American predominance elsewhere. Let us not forget that the three countries mentioned have major strategic assets in terms of transport resources and access to the Arctic.

I'm amazed the MSM still hasn't worked out what Trump does after nearly 10 years of it. He's a business man, a deal maker and negotiator. He knows the first thing you do with any deal is set out your initial bid which is way over the top. Then you work towards a middle ground. Yes it can sometimes be abrupt but it's a common tactic in negotiations
