Stone axe tips from an ex paleoanthropology student: - Make the cutting side of the stone larger so you have more weight and it doesn't slip out too often. - Make your hole between two knots in the branch so it's harder to break. - Your axe head should rest on the top and bottom of the hole, not the sides. The sides are thinner and more fragile.

American Indians would often start a fire about the base of the tree, adding a ring of wet clay at the point above which they didn't want the fire to burn. Then the stone axe would chop charcoal instead of one of the hardest woods in the forest. Besides, his wood-chopping technique seemed too random. I hope you were making real sure that the stone was not forcing the sides of the handle apart and was only putting tension on them by contacting the top and bottom of the hole. A good, seasoned wood should be really tough to break that way, even when relatively thin. Having said that, for the love of god, pick better sticks! Those look absolutely hopeless to use. Honestly that's not the problem there's plenty of examples of stone axes that are held together by the head being wedged into the handle like that. It's just that she didn't grind the sides down to make it slimmer and chose a rock that was too circular. You want to start off with or shape a rock, to be oblong or teardrop shaped. That way the hole is always smaller then the edge side of the head. If you look at some examples I think it's the Chinese examples that show why I'm talking about easiest though other styles use these ideas too.

Also, chip a groove around the circumference of your stone axe, then make your handle a 'Y' shape and slot the stone into it. Then you bind the 'Y' together and it'll hold it into place. He needs to make a copper axe head with the same heft as the rock in the stone axe if he's going to fairly compare them. That tiny piece of copper is easy to turn into a sharp(ish) blade, but it's not an effective chopper, being so light, and it can't hold an edge because it's so thin. Swap the stone for copper, but keep the same profile, and you've got a proper tool. Also sharpen it with a stone hammer, not a grindstone. Copper work hardens, so it'll harden the edge. It's not steel, or even bronze (which he really ought to get to making), but it's a definite upgrade from rocks.

THANK YOU to our ancestors and all those who had come before us...for all the improvements and technologies discovered ever since the Neolithic period. I now have a much better appreciation of all the previously mundane-looking tools I have around the house. Including the various knives, axe etc. Most are cheap but given the context of this video, would have been "Tools of the Gods" for our ancestors.

Copper tend to make a very poor wood wedge because of its softness you should use some type of iron wood i prefer to use Osage orange
@garethbaus54715 жыл бұрын
Even pine works, and it is a lot less labor intensive to make a pine wedge than a copper wedge.

Wrapping twine around the axe head and covering it in sap will make your stone axes last a lot longer. Use a harder wood for the branch/handle and make sure the axe head is tied in secure

0:55 Interesting... "tree" you found there!
@MolotovSandvich975 жыл бұрын
When you made the Celt axe, I noticed that your axe head was touching the sides of the hole. Ideally, you would allow the stone axe head to touch only the top and bottom and have space around the sides. This puts the stress on the thickest parts of the handle and allow for a stronger device. Hope this helps in the future!

To make this even more realistic, y'all should wear period costumes. Loving this series. Reminds me of going to the mountaineering part of scout camp. Learned how to flint knap, forge nails, build using only twine and sticks, and throw axes. Keep up the good work.

When you make the celt handle. Make sure the sides of the stone dont touch the wood or it will split. Only the top and bottom, but the sides need to be thick enough to withstand the force aswell aslong as they aren't touching. That primitive technology guy said that in his subtitles.

You know what? You're right. And I vote that YOU be the one who pays for him to continue making these videos. I mean, it's not like he has to pay bills or buy food or pay his staff or... wait, aw shit... He DOES have to do all that. And here we are enjoying some FREE content that wouldn't exist without ads or sponsors. Wait, scratch that, after the AdPocalypse, it's pretty much only sponsors that pay video creators anymore. So yeah... it's sad they need sponsors, but that's how career KZbinrs get paid.

Thanks for another great video. My dad told me that on his farm in Alberta, Canada, he and his brothers found Native American tomahawk stones. My dad told me a museum would have liked them. One of my older brothers found a Cree Native arrow head in a field on our dad's farm. It's neat how they did things long ago, with the materials they had. Cheers!
