I recently went to this mall 3 times this year while visiting my gf. It felt kind of barren, especially with how many stores were closed, but the aesthetic definitely hit different than any other mall I’ve been to so far. Something about it just felt more distinct to me. Plus she grew up with this mall too. Kinda miss this place too even after a few months of not visiting it ngl. Great video too btw!!

This mall was my LIFE growing up. My grandma took me there all the time (due to her shopping addiction lol) and then I spent many weekends there as a teenager. I still remember the excitement of shopping and feeling like a new outfit was going to change my life! 😂 I’m so sad to see it’s gone downhill. I really miss mall culture, those were the best days.

I went to college at a school that was basically across the street from this mall. I used to go here all the time in 2003-2005. I should go back and visit again before it closes for good. Thanks for the video!

YTI or the art college? I actually used to work here at the arcade as a summer job that was in the food court RIGHT by the food court entrance out back of the mall on the upper floor that they converted later to an AT&T store. That was probably in 97/98 when I was just in my last year or so of high school at york vo tech. I still remember the Top Skater game they had in the center of everything, I ended up getting a Pennywise CD because of the soundtrack from that playing all the time.

Ahh I remember the 2012 food court closing. Good times, good times. Local high schoolers would all come here after being let out on half-days; most busy I've ever seen the mall. Great work!

Great video. Spent a ton of time there as a teenager in the 90s. The picture at the 12 min mark is from the old York Mall that was literally down the street.

This mall and its sister in Johnstown are so sad to see in their current state. It's always surreal to see a place that's basically exactly how it was 30 years ago, except emptied out and depressing. I remember (at the Johnstown location) being 8 years old and always excited for Boscov's because they had a playable Sega Genesis on display, lol. I had to be dragged away time after time.

Don't forget, the West Manchester Mall was opened in 1980. Both of the malls did quite well until the anchors all started to collapse. Like the North Mall, Wal-Mart killed the W. Manchester mall just like they killed the York Mall (although the Galleria put a huge nail in the coffin as well since 2 of 3 anchors from there moved to the Galleria). The Galleria looks identical to the way it did in 1987 when it opened. It has never been touched. Im amazed its still hanging on since it lost 3 of its 4 anchors. Boscov's is in the middle of a huge remodel of their store right now. I just moved back to York after being away for 10 years and i'm glad the mall is still here, although its a shell of its former glory, but the anchors are all "full" at least and considering the state of malls these days, its not doing too bad. Somehow, Park City Center and Capitol City Mall are still thriving, so maybe the Galleria will hang in a while longer.

I love indoor malls instead of the outdoor shopping centers. Sad to see them struggling and closing. Kids today will never know the fun of going and hanging out with friends at a mall. No one had a phone, so your parents didn't call you etc.

Little pieces of history from this place. I recall an incident probably somewhere in the mid or late 00s where they had a coin/bill op photo booth on the little bridgeway near the elevator across from the food court. At one point they'd had a tv for years sitting on top of the photo booth, if I recall correctly in order to either show the photos or to advertise the booth with a short video. Not sure what prompted it, but I remember hearing that the tv actually fell off the photo booth to the floor 20-30 feet below, resulting in quite a mess but thankfully no hurt patrons. As well, I used to go to the Electronics Boutique on the upper floor midway down the mall (on the food court side, halfway between it and the JC Penney leg.). I got to know the lady who managed it fairly well over the something like 10 years that I spent shopping and mallratting there from the late 90s to the late 2000s, and originally bought my PS2 at that location. If I recall correctly again, I believe at one point the kaybee toys downstairs bought out the EB location and maintained two different store locations in the mall. though being fifteenish years ago now, I might be rusty on the details by now.

West Manchester got torn down and replaced with an outdoor shopping center like 2016ish I think. It’s doing better than the galleria at least.
