Short and simple explanation: Shinji caves in and starts Instrumentality, causing everyone to turn into orange Fanta and morph into one being, with everyone’s consciousness being mixed together so everyone knows everything of each other. Last 2 episodes of the main show are what happens in Shinji’s mind as this is happening. He realizes he wants to live, stops Instrumentality, and everyone can decide for themselves whether or not they want to come back. Shinji and Asuka are the first to do so, Shinji makes sure it’s real by choking Asuka out, Asuka comforts him bc she understands his pain after being morphed with everyone, and she also knows about the hospital scene too-hence the “disgusting” line.

I don't think it's that weird, because the story kinds of puts that in as a possibility (perhaps to intentionally add to the sense of confusion) and it does it both in the show and the EoE movie. Maybe what happened to Mickey (which I bet has happened to all of us some time) was that, since he was so convinced in his theory when those misleading alternate timelines/realities were shown, he might have been overly sceptical when the plot returned to the canon/Nerv world And since the story is a lot more inclined to abstract and subjective content than most, it's bound to happen. For example: in my perspective, even though the "teased" alternate possibilities might have been done in a way that kept the "confusion" vibe, it's main goal was indeed to see Shinji's dynamics with the other characters as a literal family unit. But its motivation wasn't to make you think THAT was reality, but to build a bridge between all these core and basic identity themes with the "canon" story. It's a way for the author to give perspective through comparison, which not only helps you understand the characters better, but it can also trigger emotional connections between them and viewers who have an either conscious or unconscious response to much more relatable dynamics. I hadn't actually thought about the "Asuka being Shinji" part, but it made perfect sense to me, IF you see it from the point of view of that alternate reality theory. Guessing plotlines is a very satisfying feeling that I thoroughly enjoy, but sometimes it backfires when it sets expectations. Regardless, it's still part of the fun, because even if you get good at doing it, there's always the chance of being surprised, one way or another.

It’s weird cause most anime shonen also have tons of metaphor and should get some more analysis but only Eva gets that attention to detail while everyone trashes on other shows. Not saying Eva is less or more “deep” just that from dbz to jjk and the like I’ve seen and discussed plot beats that are deeper than good beats bad yet people always make you seem like your wrong for thinking about shonen past fights no substance. It reminds me of the attack on titan effect. People hated it when it was so popular first season as the elites thought it was all hype no substance and quit. Then when it got deeper in a more obvious way they didn’t understand the clues in earlier seasons and said it’s better not trying to be pseudo deep and political. Then dropped it or hated on the ending and coped that there was a anime original ending and when there wasn’t and anime onlies liked it opposed to hating it like they thought they couldn’t fall back and agree all the time drip feeds of the story and not funny getting it made them hate it. Nope they doubled down and said the few strips of lines that were basically equal to translation changes ie official takes on what they said made the ending somehow different and told anime onlies trust me the manga is different this anime ending fixed it. The amount of saving face. I get it but I wish we all just came clean and listened to people if we didn’t get the ending or story instead of hating on it ( all stories aot was an example.) and tried to pay attention like they do watching Eva and even if our fan theories don’t pan out don’t just immediately say bad writing. (I’m not including people who “get” stories and still hate them or just have the opinion or take that they just hate a thing) more like just people who hate but don’t really come from good faith tries to engage with the story. Normies made good faith push to engage with Eva when we all thought they would hate it. Or atleast I did lol

She hates it, which is why(after Shinji) she's the first to come back from instrumentality. Nge Asuka gets enough of a bad rep without people purposely saying things like this like she has never been nice. Not to mention Rebuilds take her grouchy-ness to 100 for no reason. Bakelite isn't the same as LCL (the fluid inside the entry plug). While Bakelite is the name of a type of resin used in stuff like kitchenware and electrical plugs, the "bakelite" in the series is nothing like the real substance. I'd forgotten just how much of a bop Komm Susser Tod is. And now we can probably tackle stuff that's technically only sorta canon, because it comes from stuff like a databook and the PS2 video game. Lilith and Adam are both "Seeds of Life" which were created by a precursor race to seed life throughout the galaxy. Each seed had its own transport vessel (moon), 'dead sea scrolls' (essentially an instruction manual) and Spear of Longinus. The spear acted as a safeguard, to disable the Seed if necessary. Each Seed could choose one of two paths for the life that would come from them. The Fruit of Life would create something with incredible power that can choose and manipulate its own physical form. The Fruit of Knowledge would create something mortal, with a fixed form, that relies on cooperation for strength. Adam was contained within the White Moon, which landed in the antarctic. Lilith was contained in the Black Moon, the very top of which became the Geofront. The two Seeds weren't supposed to land on the same planet, and Adam's spear disabled him, allowing life descended from Lilith to spread across the earth. Adam stayed dormant until the Katsuragi Expedition disturbed him by removing the Spear, causing 2nd Impact.

A different answer to a different problem In the anime ending, Shinji seeks the will to live and how to love himself because he can't live with who he is and fears that, while he wishes people were kinder to him, he also feels that he deserves that, he's a coward. In this movie, Shinji seeks a why to live, but not because he can't love himself (a bit of that too) but because he just fucking HATES THIS WORLD, because the world hurts him, why live in a world where people only hurt you? who don't understand you? In the anime Shinji finds an answer which is rather wholesome, in this movie he also finds one? like He does find an answer, but it's a bit more cynical
@87JordanC Жыл бұрын
he actually comes to the same realization here that he does in the series..it's just presented in a bleaker way, but he ultimately rejected instrumentality by coming to the same conclusions. in the end, he chose to accept the pain that comes with life because he still gets to live a life (accepting himself in the process) as well as everyone else if they so choose to come back, which asuka was the first to do so (which also represents her growth as a person after all that she's been through). to me, its a lot less cynical and a lot more of a hopeful ending after the chaos the series and movie presented up to that point.
@denial10049 ай бұрын
Its actually simple, to live or to not live (considering that living means being hurt constantly by others, but not living means absolutely emptiness)? Shinjii chooses to live in the original anime and in the movie, in the anime we see a very realistically representation of what goes through a mind of someone with depression coming to that conclusion (to live), in the movie its the same thing, just presented differently to give a bit of a more dramatic take (like the world is ending and there's a giant naked teenager in the sky, pretty dramatic right?) But it's the same thing, it basically means someone depressed choosing to live even if it means getting hurt.

@derangedberger Жыл бұрын
I think if you want an explanation of what actually happened in the movie, it's pretty simple. However, what it MEANS and what Shinji is actually thinking is highly debatable. In terms of events, instrumentality occurs with the third impact, and all of humanity is fused into one when lilith/rei gathers their souls into the egg. Shinji, Eva-01, and Rei, however being the people used to start instrumentality, including the fact that Rei is shinji's mom and Eva is shinji's mom also, allowed shinji to decide the course of events. He tells the newly made god that is his mother/rei that he wishes against instrumentality, and he, along with asuka, are the first humans to re-emerge from the sea of LCL. The world is in a nightmare state, the ocean is the color of blood, a giant corpse covers the land, and the moon is stained with the blood of god. There's no undoing what's been done. But as said in the movie, anywhere can be paradise if you have the will to live.The entire rest of humanity is still liquidized, but they can return to human form by undertaking self actualization in the same way Shinji and presumably Asuka have. Now, what is Anno trying to say with all this? What is Shinji's mental state? What does Shinji and Asuka's interaction at the end mean? Is the tv finale canon to this movie, with it's events taking place inside the egg of instrumentality? Your guess is as good as mine. I don't think anyone, even Anno, can say for sure what it means.
@randonautical3363 Жыл бұрын
Spot on explanation. I’d say at the end Shinji still tried to choke out Asuka to see if everything is in fact actual reality instead of the loopy madness that happened in his mind. Asuka’s little hand rub against his cheek is a sign of affection towards him-and since everyone on the entire planet was one being for a short moment, they all know each others thoughts and struggles/pains-as to say and comfort Shinji that she understands his feelings/pain now, and Shinji breaks down because someone finally understands. Asuka’s last line too I always thought was her way of saying she found out about the hospital scene and calls him out for it lol
@denial10049 ай бұрын
- Shinji is battling with his depression trying to decide if he should live or give up - The human instrumentality is a project created and supported by people who are afraid of getting hurt and hurting other people (Ikari mentions he shouldn't get close to shinji because he doesn't want to hurt him, also he wants the instrumentality to happen so he can get rid of the pain from the death of his wife and be with her again) - The events from ep 25/26 are what goes through Shinji's (and everyone's) mind while the instrumentality is happening -Shinji chokes Asuka when they come back because during the instrumentality he did it but there's no reaction from Asuka meaning it wasn't real, since she reacts this time it means she's alive and it's real, that's why he's crying.

You can see the decline of the Japanese economy after its peak in 1995 and the starting effects of urbanization on the works. In almost all the works of that period (gits, bebop, lain, perfect blue, eva...) you can see the pressure of the city on people in an incredible way. While this may sometimes be based on not being able to make sense of reality with city scenes where you can only hear the sound of music, as in Gits, or sometimes you can turn the city noise into a horror narrative, as in Perfect Blue.

The people who massively hate it today pushed through to watch it to get the hype and hate it either cause they get confused or understand it and think it’s simple surprisingly since a lot of explainations are out there and the story is clear if you pay attention and new shows tackled the ideas as they were inspired by this. It’s akin to people who hate the AOT ending for being cliche cause they watched C…. G…s. Today just a bit of similarity hurts as everyone is looking for that elusive “unique” idea to say they watch something not generic.

Crazy to think that Misato's dad was probably a 'fuckboy' since she said Kaji reminded her of him and she turned out to gain people attention through sexuality keeping that part of her dad in her even if she despised it, the same thing for Asuka, her mom was desperate for attention and when her father cheats on her she goes crazy, Asuka subconsciously acts just like her mother wanting to feel deserved of love all the time even if it is by hurting others because she's afraid to be abandoned again.

I like OG Eva, but I hadn't 'rewatched' it in years because of how heavy and convoluted it is. I love new Eva. The Rebuild films are genuinely pleasant to watch while not abandoning the mysticism and violence. You will find them far, far easier to get through and understand. Mickey's theorizing brought me back to the early internet, where debates over OG Eva's meaning/themes/ending were a fast track to genuinely vicious arguments over lorecraft lolol.

They've been building up to the Third Impact event and it was as weird, horrifying, extravagant and epic as expected. I felt like the Rebuild films overdid the Impact events though that it became less special. But other than that, I thought Rebuild had a satisfying conclusion though. Regardless whether you believe in the time loop theory, I think the Rebuilds is an essential part of the whole experience.

They planned to make this ending but they lacked time (to produce and to squeeze it in 45 minutes) so Anno decided to change the 2 remaming episodes and focus on the deep theme of the show rather than the lore aspect. Then, later, they decided to make the movie, not as a way to please the fans (this is some wet fan theory there, let'sbe real) but because the show was super popular despite the ending. There was money to be made and I suppose Anno wanted to give it a second "better" shot as well.

Evangelion is basically just a merciless takedown of stories that purport what teenage heroes are supposed to look like and be. Shinji's journey is just him learning self-acceptance, which is why I think that although EoE is better than the last two episodes just looking at what these are in a vacuum, 25 and 26 work infinitely better as a finale. I watched those first and then the movie but honestly I kind of wish I'd done the opposite and it's what I recommend to everyone. I'm in agreement with those who say the movie and the episodes are overlapping each other but EoE is happening externally while 25/26 happen internally, within Shinji's mind. I think ending on that more introspective as opposed to bombastic place is the better move.

At this point I definitely enjoy the show finale more.
@bespectacledheroine7292 Жыл бұрын
@@Renoistic I felt like that at first because again I thought it was the better ending but isolating the two EoE definitely has a suitably "epic" quality. I can see why a lot of people prefer it but I think anybody who thinks the last two eps are bad had just been in it for giant robots and Misato's....assets.
@Crinbo Жыл бұрын
25 and 26 aren’t bad but I do think EoE eclipses them in just about every way. I never quite bought Shinji’s 180-degree turn to self-actualization in 30 seconds at the end of Ep 26. I think the final scene on the beach in EoE is perfect. Shinji has made the difficult choice to end Instrumentality and return to his individual form but it’s not all “Congratulations!” He’s inviting infinite pain and suffering into his life, and the life of anyone who chooses to return. And that return is utterly overwhelming as he chokes a newly-formed Asuka until she, in a rare act of compassion, gives him a tender caress on his face. It’s so bittersweet. There’s a hint of hope that things may get better but it’s a foregone conclusion that with human interaction comes misunderstanding and pain. I think it’s so much more fitting thematically and true to the characters.

@@bespectacledheroine7292I listened to panning the stream. A dude from giant bomb is on it with his wife and she hated the show after the ending eps. She clairifies what a lot on Reddit said(those who hate it or this series) and it’s not people who come for action she doesn’t care about action and likes adult theme show etc. I think people just want the show to function on basic abc plot structure mystery and answers. Etc. to be fair I think those same type of people also watch tons of shows and claim most are generic so when they see this I’d assume they want something profound and deep or different but they don’t they and a lot of people. They want something familiar and digestible. This on paper isn’t digestible for basic audiences. That said those watching are mostly not basic audiences. And come for the stuff here but the last two eps for someone like that are redundant as they already picked up on the subtle clues and those that didn’t already quit watching as they thought it was generic monster of the week and no depth. It’s akin to people told to watch invincible tv show and coming back saying I quit after 5 min it’s generic superhero justice league rip off. Those who realize what it’s going watch on and aren’t shocked that it’s different. Those who left would have been shocked but can’t stay long enough to notice so you lose no matter what trying to interest people. (Until hype sets in and spoils it so people watch)

Yeah me too, first time I watched Eva i preferred the EoE ending because of the visuals and everything, now that I'm an adult and have gone through depression the original ending feels way better, even if you just isolate the last two eps from the rest of the anime they still have a great message for someone who's battling with self-doubt/self-hatred/shame etc...

Now, before the new Evangelion movies, you guys might wanna check out a video explaining the lore of Evangelion to grasp a better sense of all the plot points. The Evas, Angels, Dead Sea Scrolls, the Human Intrumentality Project, etc. since I see this as the best pausing point for the series before continuing into the new movies. This movie and the way everything was portrayed supposed to gritty and grotesque. As much as NGE is about cool robot fights, its even more about the representation of human who are psychologically broken and a very visual representation of mental health decline. Anno in the new movies picked up evangelion with the same lore but reworked the ending completely to give it a more finalized and polished tone. Its his complete vision of Neon Genesis Evangelion and left most of the fanbase rather pleased.

Sock Sensei made a couple really good video essays about making sense of Evangelion, you should check them out.

All I know is not treating these teenagers for their mental health and then expecting them to be able to fix the world or stand up in fight was a bad idea. I do understand why people get upset with Shinji in this movie, but every time I see this, I think this kid is done. His mental health and self-worth are gone. How do you then expect him to get it together and save the day? Did anyone else think Yui manipulated this whole thing to get the outcome she wanted? Intentionally brought Shinji to the test for Unit 01 knowing she would be absorbed, to intentionally traumatize Shinji so he would become a pilot?
@datzfatz2368 Жыл бұрын
Yui definetly had multiple hands in how this all went down and she got what she wanted in the End, an eternal Monument to Mankinds existence. And it is stated explicitly that Seele destroyed Shinjis Ego ON PURPOSE to use him as the activator for their Plan and that he would want the same thing they want, since Yui fucked with their process by fusing herself to the activation Key, that being Unit1/Lillith. So it was necessary to get Shinji, who is now the only person who can be the one to initiate Third Impact, to do what you want him to do. Its bascially a threeway battle over control/destruction of Shinjis Ego and actions between Yui, SEELE and Gendo to all use them for their own Ends. The only thing im not entirely sure on is if Yui wanted Instrumentality to happen or not, but it was probably a part of her Plan towards her EVA monument.

Being so invested in a "its all a dream" theory is such an american thing to do,lmao. Basically,seele wanted to make humanity in to one,while gendo wanted to reunite with yui and live forever as one in the eva,and yui apparently just wanted to be with his son as one together forever,by uniting the fruit of life (angel) and the frui of knowledge (human) in to one,with the help of the mass produced evas (already mentioned in the series) to create an anti AT field (which is what gives everyone a physical indivual form,like kaworu explains) to make every one go back to how they started which happens to be like the LcLthen,everysoul unites into one inside the eva,sharing everyone elses feelings,thought and memories (shown in the last 2 episodes of the show and in the last scenes of the movie),at the end shinji decided to revert everything and go back,while every single human being that got liquified has the chance to come back again if they have the will,just like shinji and asuka.

While theres a lot of simbolism and metaphors, the thing is, those things canonically happens in the anime universe, the 3rd impact actually happens, the world merged in a share-mind ocean. It was Shinji's will who stop it at the end, and pretty much reset the world. At the end on that beach, Shinji and Asuka become the literal Adan and Eve of this new world. Sorry Mike but it was not just a dream on Shinji's mind. The story is actually kind of space sci-fi, but that's is not directly explained in the anime.
