Honestly, the mood in the room when I and all the other 30 yos into Neopets when the Metaverse project was announced to have died, was electric, kinda like when your football team loses for three seasons then gets a single good win. No one wanted this and funnily, there was a ton of drama lately where one of the original makers of Neopets got mad at us all because no one cared or liked the crypto project he was trying to sell. He got so mad he sent out pictures of himself flipping the bird to the camera and tell us all we'll die poor, was hilarious.

The Neopets thing is actually pretty complicated-the majority of the people involved didn't want to do crypto in the first place, but the company that owned them at the time did it anyway. They used randomized graphics, stole some content from fans to sell as NFTs, and the team that was actually working on the site itself had NOTHING to do with it. They just had to watch while it happened and deal with the backlash from the community, not allowed to say that they disagreed (and hadn't even been told it was happening until it launched) without risking their livelihood. It was a real "blink twice if you need help" situation. Thankfully, it's those people, not the crypto shills, who managed to buy out the IP from the parent company right before it shuttered; they're now working on getting it back up to speed. As of today, they've got 50+ of the old flash games up and running on the site again, they've brought on John Legend as a brand ambassador, and they're rolling out a bunch of other 'new' features that they've been stuck sitting on for almost a decade because of JumpStart all but literally nailing them to a wall. I'm super happy for them, and I think everyone else should be too.

Oh man, you gotta do some more reading on the neopets stuff, it's kinda sad and kinda funny. Basically neopets has changed hands a few time before it got snapped up by Jumpstart, a company that specialized in buying kids metaverses and squeezing them for every drop. They kept the site barely alive for years on an absolute skeleton crew before announcing they'd been putting the actual money into an nft project. And what an nft project... it became immediatly obvious from their marketing materials that they'd pulled the randomized pets and outfits from a fansite with a tool designed to preview outfits on your pet (because they included nonexistant pet colors that the fasite had made). The social media team for the nft was immediatly aggressive and cussing people out on Twitter. One of the guys working somewhere between the site proper and the nft stuff started negotiating behind the scenes to buy the IP, apparently he'd decided the property had more value selling merch to the adult fanbase with jobs than cryptorandos. But we didn't find out about that last part until Jumpstart went bankrupt. Well the new owner announces a soft relaunch, he's secured funding, nfts are not happening because no one wants them, limited gfuel tie in at comicon, moderately savvy choices. The fandom is tentatively excited. They've been through several owners before and his past involvement with the nfts is not the best sign. But he bought a lot of goodwill striking down the nfts, especially after the original creators of neopets got banned from the discord and reddit for trying to shill their own damned nft with people's nostalgia for their only successful project, neopets [when no one wanted their crypto bullshit either they got belligerent and started making weird, dogwhistley putdowns about inclusivity and degenerates].

They were like, "hey we're big fans of what you did, but that sounds like a scam," qnd he went off the deepend. Started getting aggressive, blamed being autistic, then his wife made some really weird and tonedeaf remarks about how the newer management of neopets had changed the word filter to make saying stuff like gay ok and everyone on discord being a degenerate because they had an age gated NSFW thread. She dug like, months into the history of posts in that channel to find something to make a "point" with. It was pretty unhinged, so they caught bans all over the fandom lol. I guess it shouldn't be that surprising, when they still worked there, Adam was infamous for coding items and currency directly to his account to flex on kids.

He used to get into arguments with literal children on Neopets when they weren't impressed enough by him for his satisfaction then code vast amounts of rare items directly to his account to brag about it. And of course when his terrible NFT project was a total failure because the Neopets community isn't stupid he lost actual money and then his mind.

I heard the NFT-free 'relaunch' of Neopets was pretty solid actually. My other half has been a fan off and on since the early 2000's. It sounds like they are listening to the community and she thinks the new management might actually 'get' what players want. It has been sold _so_ many times though and each new owner has screwed the die-hard player base. I suppose time will tell.

consider how poor the security on all the NFT scandals is im not surprised. what I find odd is that there have been like zero investigation from state agencies. like you manadge to lose several bilion dollar after 100 before you did lose several milion on the exact same thing. it would be like a shiping company gets loads a ship full of diamonds and then loses then all to Serbian pirates out near Somalia. As I understand it, Neopets ousted the executives who were pushing for NFT garbage and the company is under new management who immediately killed the previous management's crypto/NFT plans. It's not quite "We see this won't succeed so we're cancelling" as much as it is "The previous regime has fallen and we're undoing all their bad ideas". The new Neopets leadership is interested in fixing the game's numerous problems and actually improving it, which is interesting to see after like a decade of nothing happening.

surprisingly enough, Neopets...thrived from the kids-into-adults that grow up with it. It still had a healthy active user base up to 2020 (im not sure how active the site was after that). It had been forgoten by the world at large, but those that remembered kept comming back (like league of legends, but more retro) and now its owner has changed, the site got a good chunck of its games back (Flash apocalypse), and a physical trading card game is coming back.

I have always had a very weird and funny story with "Neopets" WAY back before anyone even knew what the fuck a neopet was...I mean if many even still do...I was contacted through idk maybe myspace or someplace like deviant art I have no clue where I put art back then been over 2 decades ago but the 2 creators contacted me due to pokemon art and sculptures I was doing at the time asking if I wanted to design some "Neopets" for them. I looked at their basic page which may or may not have been on geocites or angelfire lol and in my head I was like "What in the fuck is this extremely bad pokemon knock off?" This was very early internet and I figured there was no way Nintendo wouldn't rip through this website plus the designs were just bad so I told them nah, but thanks for the offer. Obviously a few years later I heard randomly "neopets this or that", seen toys I believe in stores, I believe they got a brief cartoon idk, then a bunch of them made bank selling it to viacom or whoever bought it. I kinda loathed hearing about the company every few years or seeing a banner ad randomly. When I heard the nft thing a couple years ago I laughed. I don't harbor any care now but at least somebody finally decided to stop being stupid and bailed on the crypto stuff, hopefully more do realize it's a dying useless fad like pyramid schemes or diet pills in the 80s lol I'll give them a piece of advice, crypto and bullshit like it are lame and pointless, maybe they should look into upping their quality, doing a gatcha game or something. There was a lot of outrage around it especially because so many flashed based games and site features are still broken and STILL haven't been fixed since flash was no longer supported.

I honestly remember neopets from time to time, log on to feed pets, play a nostalgia based game or two (which may no longer work thanks to no JavaScript games...), feed my pets and click around the map to see what's new/changed.
