I just found out that a distant friend of mine -- the kind you only talk to every couple of years -- lost her entire savings of like 2 million dollars on Celsius. She's become a hoarder and won't leave her house. She earned all that money as an investment manager, and she was really good at it (hence the big bankroll). I am still coming to grips with how someone with her background bought into the nonsense. She has a 13 year old daughter. It's heartbreaking.

There are mental illnesses that only manifest later in a persons life, things like hoarding and schizophrenia and they are often triggered by extreme stress (such as losing your entire life savings). I feel bad for her because while this may seem like an obvious scam to you the nature of scams makes it so different scams work on different people. Ask any expert on the subject, no one no matter how smart they think they are is completely immune to getting tricked.

With these scams, it's also common for an investor to bring in friends and family and the fallout from that I can imagine, is really really rough. Which is why I am glad creators like Coffezilla, Kira, Upper Echelon etc exist as they do a damn good job at investigating and exposing these scams.

Today was also the first day of the Thodex trial. THODEX was a failed Turkish crypto exchange platform. The Founder of that platform Faruk Fatih Özer fled Turkey and was caught in Albania. In todays trial; the founder and 7 other people charged with aggravated fraud , creation of criminal organization and operating it. Now; The founder and ceo of THODEX was asked to be sentenced to a total of minimum of 12 thousand 142 years or to a maximum of 40 thousand 462 years in prison.

Honestly the core issue with web3 is...well, it is by nature insecure. To secure a platform you have to give information, which is the literal thing web3 was designed to AVOID. So despite knowing someone's exact wallet ID, you don't know who holds the wallet, or where the wallet is...but cryptobros will go "oh but at least you know the ID!" Realistically, a "secure" web3 platform would actually require your full name, refresh your location with each logon, AND would update to the blockchain each and every time you logged on. (Obviously the platform would not DISPLAY this information, however it WOULD be collected for the purposes of "decentralized" security.) And STILL that could be defeated with location spoofers...ugh.

From a background of traditional IT, that doesn't sound quite right. Cryptographic security, in principle, is based on withholding all information that is not strictly necessary to perform a function, and transmitting such necessary information in such a way that the communication is private and any tampering evident. Knowing what somebody else is up to is at odds with that principle.

nearly everything you said is incorrect . i think may be confusing traditional centralized web2 "platforms" that interact with blockchains . the ideal of web3 is decentralized consensus-based authority , so its insecure only if the majority of the network is compromised . verifying your name or location has no impact on security because who is doing the verification and how can you trust them. we have been fortunate to live in a fairly stable time that we could rely on centralized authorities like gov for "secure" money however that is not the case in unstable countries , and decentralized cryptographic networks in that case are more resilient . in the example of zhaojun , he failed by being the centralized controller , you can have more secure interactions with blockchain using something like multisig or possible a dao like structure within their company so that even if both siblings are compromised / coerced under duress they wouldnt be able to transfer without majority consensus .
