a good trick for doing that type of twinkly star is to take a dotting tool where the head is the same size as the center you want, then take a liner brush and drag it from the center of your dot outwards!

James if u dont like the way the pink tack looks under the nail u are designing. You can use the sticky tabs that ppl use to adhere press ons to stick them down. They are clear and work very well❤

OK James, here I am, love your enthuiasm. I took notes because I have lots to say, first, you can do this, do not give up!! Second, I have been a nail artist for a very long time and stars have never been the death of any of us, not even you lol. Get yourself a striper brush, it will help, do NOT breath when doing straight lines, ( old nail tech trick). For the star with more lines in it, make the circle first, then pull the lines out with the gel that's already there. Hope I helped!!!😊

If u find the pink putty off putting, try using those sticky adhesive tabs that some people use 2 attach press on nails. They're rubbish 4 holding nails on fingers but excellent for using on nail stands, was honestly a game changer 4 me, & no tacky residue left 2 scrub off back of nail. Let me know how u get on, I'd b interested whether u also find it helpful 😊😊

I think you did awesome. A few people have already mentioned this, but for the stars (or any line work) go from the center and flick out. Just like how your brother describes doing a winged eyeliner. It makes the point thin and avoids over thinking it!

A good tip for u James, instead of the pink tack to hold the nail on the stand, try glue dots, they're clear and will do the same thing and then u can peel em off the underside of the nail once your done 👍🏼😀

The long fine brush is called a rigger in watercolor painting it was used to paint the fine sail ropes (rigging) on ships and even the best artists needed help with trembling, so I would maybe get a postcard size pad, a rigger and a bit of cheap watercolour paint to practice. You can also practice blooming techniques, fading in fact most nail artistry seems to be adapted from watercolour. The reason it might be good is to perfect the techniques by repeating easily without wasting nail after nail .

That bluey color is gorgeous 😍 So I've definitely not done ombre nail art but I do paint figures! I've found that I get the best gradient by painting the whole section one color, sponging on the ombre color and then using a new sponge and the base color and going over where the two colors meet and just go back and forth between the colors until it's as blended as you like. Hopefully that advice can help you somehow haha 💜 love these videos James!!

Yay! I'm glad I can help! Also sometimes I find it helpful to water down my paint slightly for layering after I get the base gradient done to make it easier to blend, if that makes sense. I'm not totally sure how you "water down" nail polish but hopefully it helps! 🖤

And use the sponge to drag the colour out. Won't work so well for the centre focused ones but when it follows the length or width it works.

Hey, don’t know if you’ll see this, but a non-nail camera trick here to help with lighting/accurate colours on camera. It looks like your camera is set to auto-exposure and when your black gloves come into frame the camera sees all that black and brightens the exposure to average it out. Simple fix is to wear gloves that are a medium toned colour like your purple table. Anything but white or black. Hope this helps 😁 I’m just getting into doing my manicures so love watching this new content from you. I like that you’re using realistic length nails. A lot of nail content uses SUPER long nails, which aren’t realistic for a lot of people to wear. Of course with shorter nails you have less space so it’s more challenging, but I appreciate it. 🙏🏻

I have such a hard time with fine details because of shaky hands. You did a great job with the fine detail though, and yes, longer bristles help on those brushes, I also like to focus on where I am going, rather than the brush tip. That seems to help a bit with straight lines.

i so love watchin your journey! please keep sharin with us. 🥰 this set is gorgeous & i give you major props for divin in with your airbrush (i don't have the courage to try that yet 🙈) just two tips from someone with suuuper shaky hands (and pls forgive me if they've already been suggested, i'm too lazy to scroll lol) 1) if you don't have a long striping brush, use floss or thread. you can coat the floss with polish & then lay it down the length of the nail as an "outline." then you can go back in with a detail brush & thicken it up if necessary. just use the thread/floss as a guide for a straight line. 2) for multi-prong stars, use a dotting tool to place a blob, then use a fine brush & drag out your prongs from the center of the blob. only use the polish that's already in the blob, no need to re-load your brush with more product. that technique will also keep your design thin & won't add any extra bulk from additional polish on your brush; you're just "spreadin out" whatever polish is already there. hope that makes sense. ps -- welcome to "dogs barkin & other folks makin noise in the background of nail art tutes" youtube! you've truly made it! 🥳 lmaooo

And those 4 pointed stars r done by placing a thickish dot in centre 1st, then take a long liner and using the gel from the dot just drag ur brush from the centre blob outwards. That way the tips of the stars points r much thinner than at the centre as the paint gets used up as u drag the lines outwards. Hope that makes sense, lol. Let me know how u get on, and pls just ask if i haven't explained that very well 😊😊

Hi James. so one thing i have learned ( from Kirsty Meakin) is that its very importend that the brush is full of polygel, meaning that when your putting on the colour, you have to swirl it in the colour, so every bristle is coted, that makes so the colour moves better off the brush on to the nail. And one thing I myself am guilty of is not practicing on a practice nail, and not the one I want to wear :) and well the other thing is just practis, practis and practis. Loved the video. thanks for sharing 💜

You definitely made that style of stars correctly. I’d only recommend you start your lines from the imaginary center and draw out so that all the lines taper at the ends. Then follow up with rounding out the corners as you did. If you really want the center to be more flat/filled you can start with a center dot and drag the gel out but it can still end up bulging a bit if you use too much product.

These looked so good!! Also I think the issue with the color looking lighter on the camera might be from your black gloves throwing off the white balance. I know sometimes when there’s something really dark it tends to make other things a lot lighter to try to compensate and sometimes ends up with the lighter parts looking blown out. If you have auto white balance on this is probably your issue! It looked a lot darker when your hands were out of frame

Great stuff, you did a fantastic job, but please please do some research on the dangers of air brushing gels! You are breathing in something that can do irreparable damage and if you are already experiencing signs of allergic reaction it could prove devastating. Just imagine what breathing in the particles can do to you if you are already having issues with skin contact. No matter how many influencers you see doing it, air brushing gels is NOT SAFE. Take it from someone who had to close up their nail salon and switch carrers due to developing devastating allergies to gel products. 😢
