The King’s Gambit is a great choice for this Armageddon format - you want fireworks from the opening gun because you don’t want Black to end up with draw odds AND increment after move 40.

If Nepo could defend as well as Magnus and play end games as well he might have a chance as Carlson has declared that Nepo is as good as anyone in the world with both Queens on the board and the initiative.

Nice to see Armageddon getting tweaked to 10/7. I've said since the beginning that 5/4 favored Black too much, and a longer time control makes for better play as well.

Excellent analysis. Nepo paying homage to the great players of the king's gambit, going back to the romantic era of chess. Any king's gambit with many sacrifices and a king chase is a real treat. In chess, the accumulation of threats outweights a simple gain of material. And a king's gambit with a rook sacrifice really makes the day. Remember Spassky-Bronstein, 1960 and the exciting Bronstein-Tal, Riga 1968 in which Bronstein daringly gave up a whole rook to the chess sorcerer Tal. Tal gave a lot of fits to the rest of the players of his era, just like Dubov and Firouzja are doing now to the players of this era.

That’s so cool. Whenever I play white vs players who are much stronger than me I always pull out the King’s gambit because it gives me some chances of winning. No point entering something more positional because I’d get outplayed anyways.

Superb analysis Mr King, in all likelihood it was a tremendous treat for you to analyze this game. As chessplayers, we have played the king's gambit in our lives. Nepo gave us a trip to the romantic era of the game, reminding us of names like Anderssen, Morphy, Spielman. He paid homage to two of the greatest players with the rook sacrifice in the king's gambit: Boris Spassky and David Bronstein. It reminded us of Spassky-Bronstein, 1960 and Bronstein-Tal, Riga 1968. Spassky-Bronstein, we all know the famous history about its use in "From Russia with love". In Bronstein-Tal, the sorcerer gave up a rook to the magician out of a whim and pride. Tal was the player that gave fits to the rest of players of that generation, just like Dubov and Firouzja are doing so nowadays. Any king's gambit with sacrifices and a king chase is always a classic.

@@GuillaumeCartier .I doubt it. KG's has long been studied and Magnus has employed it himself in online games so he's no stranger to the opening. At most, Magnus can assign one of his seconds to look into any potentially dangerous lines while he focuses on his core openings.

I'm sorry I'm temporarily strapped so I can't support your excellent broadcast monetarily. Nevertheless I love your accent and your analysis. For a short time I was a USCF Master in a previous lifetime and my favorite opening was the King's Gambit. While traveling around the country 40 years ago I spent 40 days and nights in Nawlins (New Orleans.) While there I played a stakes match with the first Afro-American Master residing there since Paul Morphy's day (Alfred Carlin). I was bouncing around between Class A and Xpert at the time. In the first game I won with the King's Gambit. By the time I got to Santa Barbara a year or so later I was an Xpert for good. You've inspired me to try it again in skittles!

I have Nepo's course on chessable. It's ok, though I don't love it. Two of the reasons for that are out of Nepo's control. 1. The kings gambit is kinda a dubious opening. Especially in the crucial 3. ... d6 and 3. ... g5 lines of de KGA several of the lines end with the text happily announcing that white has equalized. 2. Chessable was designed for memorization but often I want to linger on moves longer than it allows for. This can get in the way of understanding the opening better. My third complaint is that a lot of the text is rather terse and assumes quite a high level of understanding. Sometimes lines end with a claim that white has a great position and I can't figure out why. A bit more explanation and structured discussion of the positions would help. Those complaints aside it is solid work helping you find playable lines against everything black can throw at you. If you don't mind playing a sketchy opening and like classical attacking chess this could be worth it.
@PowerPlayChess
@PowerPlayChess 3 жыл бұрын
Try my ChessBase course instead! Plenty of opportunities to linger over moves and I believe my repertoire is very practical (Power Play 27). And if you want typical KG tactics to solve try the Tactics Toolbox (Power Play 28)

It's always fun to mix it up win or lose. In 40 years of tournament play my best winning percentage was with the King's Gambit although I often played the Queen's Gambit if I felt/thought my opponent might be better prepared for e4 rather than d4.

Thanks!! Exciting video with great analysis...Credit to both players for daring opening. So a common belief is that Paul Morphy would get crushed vs today’s GM’s because he lacks a knowledge of modern opening theory. Yet super GM Ali Reza is lost after 9 moves vs the substandard king’s gambit. So I don’t buy it. How many times have I heard super GM’s say about opponent’s move “That doesn’t look right... I don’t think that’s theory... but I’m not sure and I really don’t remember the line so I’ll just play this (natural) move....”

Speculating on what would happen if the greats from the past played the greats of today is pointless. We should just appreciate them all. The variables are so many and so few are even identified by fans. What if the greatest chess player of all time never played the game in the first place? How many Tiger Woods are there that never pick up a set of golf clubs? Just enjoy what we have and those that blazed the trail to get where we are now. Capablanca would laugh at you if you told him a hundred years from now you'll be nothing compared to a mobile phone with a piece of software running on it. :)

Morphy playing at the same strength he was in his prime would get crushed by today’s top players. After all, they all know everything Morphy knew (because Morphy showed us the way) and so much more. But morphy was such a talent that he’d almost certainly be top 5 if born today.

@@jonathanbaxter5821 I don’t know that they know everything Morphy knew and then some. I don’t know that they calculate as well or are as astute to notice the key moves to calculate. Seems like - played well by white, like here - the King's Gambit is a long succession of fantastic tactics for white, more than strategic per se? ie despite being material down from the get-go, if you manage to long castle, it's often the black king that is stuck in the middle, and under fire left, right, and centre.
