So beautiful. I really miss the old Sun Microsystem, they actually care about opensource and make good software and hardware

I love these machines. I've run quite a lot of Sun equipment in my career and it's always been rock solid and scalable.

Running on a lower wattage power supply doesn't reduce stress on the components. That's not how electricity works. The current draw is determined by the resistance of the components (the voltages coming from the PSU are fixed). All you're doing is increasing stress on the lower watt PSU (which is fine as long too much current isn't being drawn). It's fine to pull some components CPU's, HD's, first tho. That makes sense. But whether you do it with a low or high watt PSU doesn't matter, as long as the PSU's wattage rating is sufficient. The only advantage to the lower-watt PSU's is a breaker or fuse might blow sooner, with the normal current being closer to its design limit, but you didn't say that.

awesome, someone saving those machines instead of letting them sit in the trash

I used a pre loaded Solaris drive in the system as it didnt come with hard disks. I also left out password cracking the LOM because it would have revealed sensitive information.

Memory: **faults** The same memory: i guess i just work then
@DoogieLabs
@DoogieLabs 3 жыл бұрын
This is pretty commonplace in IT. I've had brand new servers that I've pulled out of the box and had memory errors straight away; re-seat the offending stick, (I normally do all of them for good measure) and off we go. It doesn't matter how well padded the box, being jostled around in shipping is always enough to potentially knock something loose.

Is there an update video coming to show if the memory swap worked? A Sun classic piece of hardware
@DoogieLabs
@DoogieLabs 2 жыл бұрын
Memory swap went well, no issues after that. For a short time after that video the machine was available publicly and allowed people to login with a guest account. Once it starts to get cold again, I will bring it back out for some exercise. I've got several videos I need to edit and upload, but my video editing efforts have been with several other projects so I've only done shorts and TikTok I also found a nice piece for my E3000 and have a graphics upgrade video planned.

@@DoogieLabs with what modern xeons it's possible to compare with perfomance?
@foca2002
@foca2002 2 жыл бұрын
@@user-nb6in8ov2z these servers can be compared with Xeons of the same era. A modern Xeon is way more powerful not even a close comparison. There's a huge gap between Core duo/Core 2 Duo technology to Nehalem/Core i technology Intel jumped way ahead on that era. Nehalem and Nehalem ex was a amazing leap on x86 tech that took the RISC competition out.

"Branch prediction" init? Bizarre. That's normally not something you can turn on or off in a cpu. There's nothing to init; the CPU maintains the history tables itself.
