Your video is hilarious. But a few tips. Big ships have TWO rudders and props: a set in the front and a set in the back. That's why you have two throttle/rudder controller thingys. That way, you can make the ship drift left or right or rotate in place. Also, if the simulation is accurate, you're also moving with the flow of the river, which I think explains some of the unexpected movement you're experiencing.

Ok... so basically boats are very easy to understand if you start with small boats and not straight away an ocean liner... I will try my best in explaining the controls. I'm a Ship Simulator 2008 player. I also learn by crashing and sinking lots of ship xP. So if I explained anything wrong, please forgive me. The first one is the "steering wheel" of the ship. It basically helps you to turn the ship. The second and third controls the ship's power and heading. In SS 2008, there is no " steering wheel" on a ship named "Ocean Star", which is basically the same with this ship. So push front to forward and push back to reverse. The tricky things is this, when you turn left on the controls, it will turn right. Because this ship uses reverse thrusters, which is nowadays almost all modern ocean liner uses this. Finally, it is a bow thruster. It helps to turn the ship. The difference between bow thruster and rudder(I think this is the correct name?) is bow thruster is installed in the front of the ship. Some larger ships can have up to 2 bow thrusters, which are at the front and the back. I hope this is helpful to you. You are quite good as a beginner(I crashed more severely than you did when I start to play this game xp). Hope to see more video from you (^o^)／

the side thing you couldn't work out what it does does turn the boat, it just uses big propeller fan things which pull water through holes in the front of the boat and pulling the front sideways. The weird twisty thing that control speed are the individual controls of the propellers at the rear of the ship. So when you turn them, they turn the individual propellers themselves, so you have to have the power on to turn as there is no rudder on the ship. So there are basically 2 ways to turn the ship depending on what you want to do.

You have two screws (engines). Each can swivel 360 degrees. The twin controls in the center are each screw. They can swivel independently of each other. Pushing the lever forward increases power to the screw on the control corresponding with that side. Pulling the lever back reduces power, or pulling it backward past the neutral position will put that screw in reverse and increase power corresponding with the amount you pull the lever back. Swiveling the control rotates the corresponding engine. The control to the right I believe were your side thrusters. I believe the rotateable control to the left rotates both screws in tandem. You noted that the vessel was moving slightly sideways at one point even when you had all the controls set straight. This is because ships move on water which is a moveable fluid. The game likely simulates wind and current direction in that particular straight. You noted that the smoke was moving to port (left). This means the wind was moving across your vessel. Your vessel is very large. It presents a large surface area to the wind. As such, your vessel moved to leeward (downwind) as the wind pushed on it.

My explanation was fairly straightforward. A boat floats on water. It is propelled by engines which stick down into the water with rotating propellers (screws) turning the controls different ways points them in the corresponding direction. Since there are two of them it has two controls, one for each engine. Pushing them forward and backward speeds up or slows down the speed at which the props turn making the boat go faster or slower in the direction you have set the control. You also have side thrusters that push the boat directly sideways, port or starboard, For instance you put the side thruster all the way to left on the control panel at 12:09 so the boat started moving sideways in that direction (don't know why you kept saying "right" in the vid, vessel is clearly moving to port) However, in addition to whatever you do with the controls, since the boat is on water, a moveable fluid, and there is such a thing as wind and currents the boat will move the ways those forces act on the boat and must be countered with movements of the controls against those forces. For instance if you pointed the controls straight ahead but there was a current or wind coming at 90 degrees from the side, the boat is still going to move sideways corresponding with the speed of current or wind, as such you would have to correct for this by moving the controls to counter-act that force.

Just in case anybody cares The levers that control the “twisting” are the bow thrusters, which are smaller propellers in the bow meant to assist during docking. The “spinning” levers control the aft propellers of the main engine individually. One for the left and right.The helm controls both. I know it’s an old game, but nice attention to detail

The 2 middle are the azipods and can rotate a full 360. the wheel is just to control the 2 azipods at the same time. The far right control is the bow thruster and will pretty much be useless above 5-6kn. The thing with azipods is that it works alot like an outboard motor on a small boat, If you point the arrow on the control a little to port for example it will push the stern to port and not turn the actual boat to port.

Dear Nerd I see you are having trouble with the physics of a ship. Seeing as my dad was a naval officer I will explain it to you: The 2 leavers in the middle are the independent throttles for each propeller. The leaver on the right is the thruster( used for docking) The wheel on the right is the the ships wheel used to control direction. The problems you encountered are mainly because of you having one throttle more powerful than the other causing throttle directionry steering. I hope this helped, EonYT

Left - right: 1st - Rudder and Master steering... Never go past half, or the ship goes backwards! 2nd and 3rd - Azipods... They can rotate 360 and are the engines. Just use the steering but don't go past half or you go the other way. Just push it on forward. 4th - Bow Thruster... Used for docking. It doesn't work unless you are at a low speed
