The Crag Cat. CR 1 large beast. Comes pre built in Spell turning. AC 13, Decent hp with 34,good dmg 1d10 bite, 40ft of movement a pounce attack, and can't be detected by magic. Spell turning: The cat has advantage on saving throws against any spell that tagets only the cat (not an area). If the cat's saving throw succeeds and the spell is of 7th level or lower, the spell has no effect on the cat and instead tagets the caster.

Can I nominate for Most Versatile Wildshape on land: The Oxen (VGM 208). Assuming at least 1 party member has access to block and tackle, a relatively cheap item you can buy in any store. You can exert over eight THOUSAND pounds of force on anything you want. (8640 pounds to be specific, or almost 4 thousand kilograms) Cart stuck in the mud? Pull it out Door barricaded? Tie a rope around the nob and pull it open Boulder blocking the road? Lift it out the way Found valuable loot, but over carrying capacity? Pull it to the nearest town. Enemy encampment on the upper floor? Pull down the pillars! And if you really want to frustrate your DM, you can easily pull SEIGE WEAPONS across the battlefields. Nothing is more versatile then pure raw force of strength, combined with human intelect and ingenuity. And to think they're CR 1/4.
@ripopol3 жыл бұрын
Also for those doing the math at home or joining the Circle of the Shepherd, a 3rd level "conjure beasts" allows for 69120 pounds of force to be exerted in this way, or around 31 thousand kilograms.

Just played a game recently where I finally got to attack the druid/barbarian out of wild shape. 3 giant spiders webbed him and a barbarian started to smack him. He promptly changed into a giant spider and just walked out of the web bit the bugbear who failed its save took max damage and died. He then climbs up on the roof and nails the big bad magic user with his web attack on the next round. Party then all throw ranged attack at the restrained big bad. He got dead fast. Talk about a turn around. Damn druids!

My DM gave my Beast Barbarian an item that lets her swallow things if she uses her Bite attack, quoting the statblock. /Turns out/, Extra Attack to grapple and follow up with a Bite attack combos /really well/ together, to the point she's eaten a CR 14 creature at level 6 because being blinded and restrained makes it really hard to land attack rolls, use spells on a creature you can see within range, or beat a raging Barbarian's Athletics roll.

Made a Orc Barb/Moon Druid character for rage and unarmored defense. Really improves the wild shape survivability by bumping most of the ACs up at least 1/2 points and giving it damage reduction while you are raging. Using skill expert for Athletics expertise and grappler feat with the Giant Constrictor Snake means you could grapple a dragon of any size and probably win since you maintain your skills of double proficiency +4 with advantage from rage. From all my research, something to keep in mind that a monsters DCs for grappling is a average generated as a enemy and doesn't apply to when a player is grappling something which is handled completely differently(opposed athletics vs acrobatics(dex)/athletics(str). Was a great build and a lot of fun since once you are out of wild shapes you are still a full caster, assuming you didn't burn all your spells to heal while in shape. Telepathic feat is a great addition allowing the character to communicate while in animal form improving social interactions too.

A note on the giant octopus as well this is more gm dependant as it is not mechanically indicated but in real life an ocotopus can get though any gap that it can get it's beak and eyes though. This would mean it is a large creature that could technically get though a small hole. A good list for the options liked the way you broke the roles down and liked the versatile list the most because despite it begin a very combat orinated role with wild shape using it for versatility is still quite common and avaiable to all druids.

Had a druid vs druid fight, the giant spider poison reduced the wildshape to 0 reverting the druid back, but as an added bonus the DM ruled that they would be paralyzed as spider poison specifically says the target is paralyzed not killed when reaching 0 hp. I would argue the deinonychus can beat out the clawfoot for damage output. At base it gets a 3 attack multi attack, and it gets pounce for an additional bonus action attack, making a total of 4 potential attacks per turn. The clawfoot does have +1 to attack and damage compared to deinonychus, as well as pack tactics, but the extra attack makes up for the damage, and assuming the pounce succeeds at knocking the enemy prone, all subsequent attacks will be made with advantage anyway. I think a good argument can be made for either though.
@Dan.the.Guitarman3 жыл бұрын
The best thing you can do for your wildshapes is to dip 1 lvl into monk. You will get unarmoured defense and can add your wisdom modifier(actually 10+creatures dex+your wisdom. This results in AC of 15 to 19 for your wildshapes

Druid at my table played the Deinonychus from Volo's Guide to Monsters/Tomb of Annihilation. Similar to Clawfoot but has three attacks and 26hp (although no pack tactics and 1 lower attack/damage). At level 2-4, those 3 attacks plus pounce is amazing - probably better than Clawfoot. Benefit drops off after that when +4 to hit just isn't enough (Clawfoot would be better by level 4-5... but we weren't including Eberron content).

So in my first campaign, my friends and I were playing a prewritten campaign. In one side quest, we were hired to find out what was killing a local farmer's cattle. Our druid (not me) was the then UA Circle of Wildfire, and as such he only used his wild shape twice in the whole campaign. I had the brilliant idea of waiting hidden in the field and having our druid turn himself into a cow. It proved shockingly effective in that it not only drew out the predators, but in the following fight he actually attacked with the cow at least once. Definitely a top 10 memory for me.

COM druid is the best druid. It's the first step on your easiest way to semi-true immortality. You'll keep aging but nothing will ever be able to kill you in combat, which is all that matters in D&D. The only problem I have with COM is that it does "1/3 your level" and it really should do the "1/2 your level". Otherwise you get locked out of the two best beasts in the game (Great ape and T-Rex), and what druid wouldn't want to be a T-Rex? Also, despite how many new creatures have been introduced into 5e, it's strange that the grizzly bear is still one the best creatures early game.
@PhoenixNorthstar3 жыл бұрын
I'm going to put this out before I watch this video, if Crag Cat from Storm Kings Thunder isn't on this list I'll be disappointed. Edit: was disappointed. The Crag Cat is a badass, admittedly only having 13AC and 34HP means it's not the best tank, but a 1d8+3 claw and a 1d10+3 bite with the pounce ability is still good, it has non-detection (cannot be targeted by any divination spell or perceived by any form of scrying or magical sensor) and 60ft darkvision. But of course it's big selling point is spell turning, any time it is solo targeted by a spell that requires a save (no AoE or vs AC) it gets advantage on that save and if the save is successful and that spell is 7TH LEVEL OR LOWER IT TARGETS THE CASTER INSTEAD. For a CR1 creature that's amazing. Edit 2: Apparently WotC realised Crag Cat was too powerful and has recently Errata'd it's type from Beast to Monstrosity specifically to prevent Druids from wild shaping into it, am even more disappointed.

What’s weird about wild shape is that it’s presented like an integral class feature equivalent to, like, a barbarian’s rage or a paladin’s smite, but it really only serves that purpose for the moon druid. For every other subclass wild shape ends up being more like a niche utility with all its restrictions, which is why they started giving newer subclasses alternatives that use the same resource.
