I thought 'kaiju' is just the Japanese word for "giant monster'? Like Godzilla and similar creatures. The Japanese have used the term for ages. Pacific Rim merely made the term more generally known beyond the subculture of Japanimé monster movie fans. But it makes sense that the characters within the Pacific Rim universe would use the word for the alien monsters. Heck, if such creatures started popping out of the oceans in the real world, people would start calling them "Godzillas" or "Kaijus" too. (Because "Cloverfields" sounds too cute, and they're obviously not dinosaurs.)

You're right, kaiju does mean "strange monster" or "weird monster" etc. But at the start of Pacific Rim they give the translation for Kaiju as "Giant monster" which I guess sounds better and it is generally associated with Godzilla mythos creatures which are typically gigantic.
