@HydrogLoxАй бұрын
@@RusticRonnie You're missing the point. A Valve produced Steam Machine would finally give developers publishing on Steam a legitimate hardware target to prioritize for optimization, especially once it rises to the top of the Steam hardware survey and if they want Steam Machine certification. It would be interesting to see what Valve could whip up for the price point of a PS5 Pro. Given the circumstances it would likely be better than what an independent system integrator could do with off the shelf PC parts. Meanwhile it's a console that you can do “PC things” with. Also AMD taking a break from high end GPUs made me wonder whether they are refocusing on getting an APU solution up to the level of mid-range discrete GPUs; a partnership with Valve could represent a valuable (quantity) opportunity there. You are still free to cobble together your own configuration from new and/or used parts but then it's your responsibility that your configuration meets the requirements that Steam Machine certification assumes if you want to enjoy that level of capability and support.

What I would LOVE to see is that both are successful in their own right: Sony keeps cranking out bangers of first-party, GOTY candidates, and Valve keeps growing Steam, developing Linux gaming (also as a real competitor to Windows gaming), and we continue to see choice INCREASE. If Microsoft wants to open up GamePass everywhere, including Windows/Xbox/PlayStation/Steam, that would be great too. I have not been a PC gamer until I bought a Steam Deck, and I love it. I would love to see the Steam Machine 2 have serious chops at great quality graphics on 4k TVs, at least with upscaling that's competitive, "good enough" if you will, on a small box that's cheaper than PS5. I would also love to see SteamOS available to anyone who wants to build a $2500 gaming PC with the latest Ryzen/RX hardware that would start to prove to NVIDIA that opening their drivers to Linux gaming is beneficial, competitive, and potentially lucrative (whatever it takes to lure them in). I can see it all happening, maybe not all at once, but possibly gradually over the next 5-10 yrs. What a world of gaming that would be! And Valve might be the company that could ignite it all.

Tinkering with my Steam Deck lead me to reorganize my desktop emulator and rom collection, to update and replace where it best fit. Or if you wanna get real fancy, keep it the same but after a few seconds (when you would normally remove it again), then make it move into the corner while shrinking... Or maybe make the edges blur out instead of being a hard rectangle. But I have no idea how hard those things would be, I'm a complete noob when it comes to video editing. And on the other hand, now the title of the game is visible and legible on the seekbar, which is also an advantage :) So I dunno, thank you for trying this though, it definitely helps in remembering these games you're showcasing :) As for a steam box/console, I wouldn't want one myself, but I think it would be very good as competition for Sony like you say. before the oled came out when everyone was going on how it had to be steam deck 2, i was looking at a lot of the actual filed paperwork for it and the wifi 6 which most had illustrations of a desk top box in the filings back then (the wifi antenna wraps around the entire casing in the illustration specs) so over a year ago. it also has in the filed specs from back then that deckard would have a distance sensor from it (i don't remember the wording, its been over a year) but i've been aware of deckard for over 2 years, the desk top box over a year now, and the controller 2, we just found out about... by the way.. in all that i picked up on, deckard could easily be compatible with steam deck (at least with the oled version - its in the old filings anyway)

Seems more likely to me they will make an exact copy of the Steam Deck in terms of APU, memory etc., and sell this a lot cheaper since it doesn't require a battery or screen. It is much easier for them to maintain one baseline in terms of optimizing vulkan etc.

People will be expecting to play modern titles at 60 fps on this. Especially xbox gamers that have been betrayed by xbox. It would have to be at least more powerful than the Series S otherwise the Ponies amd Xbots will just dog it and not buy it.

I think there are also 2 more options this can be other than a console. 1. Small desktop Devkit. 2. Gaming laptop. I feel the first one is self explanatory but the second one makes ABIT more sense as I think I could more easily get a parent to buy a laptop instead of a gaming handheld or a console like system
@neverfae442Ай бұрын
I think.... the craziest thing this could be would be a tricked out dock for your steam deck. Like you dock it, and it has external storage to draw from (like games you cant usually play/play well). Something that's similar to the switch conceit of a handheld that is also a home console, where its like a home console you can pick up a piece of. I think if its a computer, basically, geared to gaming? And it even has a little peripheral spot where you can pop your deck down and suddenly you can play all the games you have saved to its memory without much muss or fuss, thats suddenly a merging of pcs and handheld gaming. Thinking about it, when the switch was released there was speculation about the dock doing all sorts of performance enhancements and extra storage for it, so you could have "on the go" games and "at home" games. That wouldn't work too well for the switch. But Valve is already a company saying you can play most games on the deck, but not all. We already accepted that. But a home console that even just nods to the handheld branch would sell numbers. Literally any integration and suddenly its "well I have a rog ally, but it can run the steamOS fine, and if its on that then it docks to the steam machine and I can power up my gaming and just grab it and go when I need to". I dont know a lot about tech, but thinking as someone who bought a steam deck in the first place because it seemed like the sort of device that would have a big community to help me if I needed it, and a company that would offer support if I ran into an issue I dont have the skills to work around, if this happened then I would very happily save up to grab it.

A console with the power and freedom of a high-end PC would be a huge win in my opinion. The standard they should apply is “can it run Crysis?”

It should totally be a modular condole like PC. Base is main mother board with format like Minisforum DEG1 only power supply is built in and easy open spots for putting in CPU, RAM, and storage. Then just like the DEG1 you just plug GPU into the outside. This would open up the ability to just buy and upgrade for individual parts When you can. Most of the time cheaper for customer and a way for companies to get a lot more little buys per customer that would actually lead to more profit than a few bigger buys cause it would be easier to do. Even with the main base mother board you can get the newest one and just move over the other parts.

I've had a steam deck for a few years, and a few months ago I bought a dock so me and my roommates can play games on the TV. I would probably be interested in some sort of new steam machine as a more powerful TV gaming device, without having to stream or drag my big pc into the living room

My only concern is having the ultimate upgradibility over time that PC has had for years. Looking at how the original steam machine prototype was designed.. I can see that dream bring real. Not to mention Valve has a bunch of data when it comes to what hardware we are using with which games. Some SFX Gaming PC pre-builds with Steam OS installed that comes with a controller maybe? BUT considering PC hardware is getting more expensive. I might make my own stream machine, buy there steam controller 2 and get to playing.
@reveriestandardАй бұрын
back when steam machines launched, they also didn't have gamescope, or any decent game focused compositor, they also didn't have access to powerful AND SoCs, so third party hardware vendors were having to put in PC GPUs vs the more cost effective SoC

One thing I really want to see Valve do with Big Picture Mode is make a proper console like experience for Steam. I want a Steam box under my TV but I want it to be the only box. I want it to be able to do Streaming and play disc media. One of the big selling points of the PlayStation 1 was that it played CDs, PlayStation 2 played DVD, and 3 played Blu-Rays. I still have a lot of disc based media and I want a to be able to play it on my console like device.

@@tonyrosario1940Yes I hope this is coming sometime soon - with all these devices we need wider support for cloud saves and backups. I play plenty of games on my deck that don't support cloud save so manually moving saves to a steam box would be a hassle.

I bought a Quest 2, then a Quest 3. Before that, I played Red Dead Redemption 2 religiously on Xbox Series X. Then I figured out how to play RDR2 in 3D virtual reality on my Quest with my new PC. My Xbox is now collecting dust. I have not touched it since. It's a paper weight. RDR2 in 3D VR changed everything. It's what I've been waiting for my entire life. I simply can not go back to a flat screen television. I'm truly in the world now. I can almost feel the wind, rain and snow on my face. I have to squint when the sun gets in my eyes. It's that good. I'm getting goosebumps just remembering how amazing it is to be on my horse riding through the forest and watching the sun glimmer through the leaves overhead, then coming to a clearing and seeing the lake in front of me. Another console means absolutely nothing to me. I will never go back. If this "valve in a box" comes out and can do VR great, but it won't be any greater than a 4070, so it's already outdated in comparison. It has no use whatsoever for me. Not dissing it or anything, but once you've done high end PCVR, you just can't go back. It feels like getting into a gas car after driving a tesla. The future isn't another box you stick under a TV. Now with UEVR, R.E.A.L. mods, vorpX and SteamVR, I have thousands of games to play in VR. I genuinely could not care less for this new box. I like downloading a game and then tinkering with it to add features to the world's I experience. It's what video games should have always been, and it's genuinely here finally. Can't wait to get home and jump back into RDR2 and work around the homestead and do some camping by a fire as I watch the sunset 🥰

Proton is quite simply amazing for us Linux users. Had very few games that don't work right, and it's never very long before its patched. Or even then just switching proton versions a lot of the time works too, and it's trivial to do. I've also noticed a large uptick in indie studios making Linux native versions because even they realise there is a user base there and with it growing all the time, it makes sense.
@lthomas63Ай бұрын
I’d like to see a starting price of $399 or less, the ability to have the user update the RAM or the storage, multiple slots for SSD’s to expand the storage. Also, keep the ability to purchase cheap games and not start making premium games only for it so you can always pick up cheap games to purchase on it.
@Tekay37Ай бұрын
The biggest advantage of any SteamOS hardware will be that you already own all the games you've bought in the past and you can just play them on the new hardware. I hope Valve doesn't just publish a console, though. I hope they'll release a SteamOS Desktop Gaming PC as an alternative to updating from Windows 10.

I think it’s some kind of pc. Whether you call it a “pc” or “steam machine 2” it doesn’t matter. It’ll have power over portability because they will need the power for their upcoming vr headset. I think will be portable enough though to put it in your living room or at a desk and play it with their new steam controller too
