@Fewtariusis it specific handhelds only or does it support full desktop parts? If it's support a lot of modern CPU, GPU, network drivers, basic peripheral support for mouse keyboard and controllers then it's great. Though I don't think valve would open SteamOS immediately to desktop hardware, I can see them working with OEM who make handhelds but opening up to DIY desktop users might take a while. I think Valve should make 3 tiers for the Steam Machine, a cheap $400 basic 1080p box, a mid-range $600-700 1440p box and an "Elite" $1000 4k gaming box. Valve underestimated how many people bought the highest priced Steam Deck and I think a lot of people would want the best graphics they can get on their TV's.

@ekintekoАй бұрын
@@NerdNest 1/4 I don't think a Steam Machine is going to work. They'll need to redesign the Steam Controller and somehow juggle this with their other hardware divisions. It's a bit much.
@ekintekoАй бұрын
@@NerdNest 2/4 Adding on top, I don't think we will be getting a Steam Box. The Xbox Series X has not been doing too well, just to give some perspective. Valve would be on the backfoot. For it to work, they would need to be competitive with the XSX Performance and at a similar price. And Valve must re-design and introduce their SteamPad. All the while they juggle their current tablet/console with multiple variants (LCD/OLED). I think it is doable, but I don't think it would be too wise. Most of Valve's audience already has a console: their PC. The SteamDeck meanwhile is something their audience doesn't have. Maybe if Valve thinks they can grow their audience by taking away from those upgrading from PS4/XB1 consoles. Maybe. But that is potentially a high risk, low reward scenario.
@ekintekoАй бұрын
@@NerdNest I actually a better idea. Instead of a full-blown Steam Machine what Valve should instead release is an eGPU and just call it the Steam Box. You should be able to (dock?) it to your SteamDeck to get better performance on your TV. Or connect it to any of those NUC/Mini PCs and get decent performance out of it like a XSX. Maybe even just get your Windows Laptops hooked to it, opening your less than capable laptop to a world of Steam. If Valve can sell it at a set performance (eg RX-6800XT level) but at fair USD $400 price. That will do it. Hence achieving it by using the most value for money/new tech on mass production, they could squeeze out a slim $100 profit margin. Overall they might have a winner as it would elevate their audience and attract new members to Steam. AMD would be able to afford a bit of hit on their profit margins, as it would be something to help expand their business. This is basically a mass produced eGPU and a first for the market (all others have been small scale and overpriced). ASUS has been able to pull it off with the ROG Ally and the XG-Mobile Dock (RTX 4080). Basically asking for a Valve twist on this (higher value, lower price, lower performance, more units manufactured).

I desperately want a Steam console. I've been building PCs for 20 years and I'm over it. Windows has become too adversarial and I'm tired of keeping up with hardware. I want the ease of use of a gaming console, but with the ability to enter a proper desktop environment to do PC stuff. The Steam Deck with separate gaming mode and desktop mode has been perfect. It just needs more power so it can drive higher resolutions. A console-like device with a new Steam Controller and proper support from Valve is ideal. I think the technology is actually there for a Steam Machine this time around.

They just need to build on the steamdeck and keep it versatile like a suped up switch. I play mine both in handheld and docked to my 43inch 4k tv. I’d like for a SD2 to upscale better to tv and maybe come out with a fresh controller that works flawlessly with it and can wake it up, but otherwise it’s got everything I want.
@da1writer1985Ай бұрын
This guy gets it. I can dock my Steamdeck at any time, and it becomes "a Stream Machine" while later undocked to play anywhere like a Switch. Hybrid devices are where it's at imo. When Valve makes the Steamdeck 2, I'll be there day one to grab at any price they set since expectation is it should release at a reasonable price. If they release a Steam Machine, I'll pay $0 for it. I'm a working dad, with one tv in the house used primarily for enjoying movies and shows with my family - I really do not have time to sit down and take that time away from my family or staying up late at night is practically a no (many of us have work schedules of 5:30am to 5:30pm). My PS5 sat collecting dust because of my busy work schedule and family time. If it wasn't for the Steamdeck, I would have just abandoned gaming period. Being able to play games while still watching stuff with the family or play a little in bed before I have to konk out and go back to the grind has been a godsend. I even bring my Steamdeck to work sometimes to play during breaks - something a Steam Machine could never do.

@lexlopez15Ай бұрын
@bison08-t6e the difference with phones is that people pay it over time so they don't actually shell out $1k for it from the getgo. When they upgrade their phones they get entered into a new contract that charges them interest on the phone if they can walk out with it for "free" or with a deposit of $50 or so. People aren't thinking about the higher cost down the road, they're thinking they just paid $50 for a $1k phone and have convinced themselves that they just got a "deal."... If valve were to follow the phone business model and put all buyers in a contract to only buy from their storefront if they were allowed to walk out with a steam deck 2 for $100 then they could effectively get over a million customers in the 1st week alone.
@lexlopez15Ай бұрын
@@Archate not sure why my comment got deleted but I basically explained why it's different for phones because people aren't paying $1k right from the ghetto for a phone. They buy it over time with a new phone contract even if it ends up costing them more with interest. So they end up either getting the phone for free or at a much lower cost when they go in to upgrade... If valve did the same thing with a console and lock in consumers to a contract to only buy from their store then a valve console could cost people $100 or so to take home.

Instead of making a steam console, make the deck more like a switch, with easier plug and play controller use when it’s in docked mode. You could even include an external graphics chip in the dock to give it a little more power when docked, and turn up the power draw. I think this would sell extremely well especially if the sold a bundle and the dock as a separate accessory for people who already have a steam deck.

One way to get around scalpers is to sell them in stores first instead of online. This is what I think they should do. Make everyone line up to get them. Or they could email their customers and give us first dibs on purchase rights.

What people keep forgetting, or don't seem to realize when talking about Valve releasing a Steam Machine is, you cannot sell a commodity below market value. That's a hard rule of market economics. If they want to subsidize the hardware they have to make it not a commodity, i.e. lock it down like a console. And I don't think they're going to do that. For one it's going to be a lot of work, but more importantly, they don't have to. People are more than happy to buy a PC to run Steam, and other hardware manufacturers are more than happy to compete with each other to keep PC hardware prices down. What Valve needs to release isn't a new Steam Machine, but SteamOS. That alone is what's needed to get more people to play on PCs.
@haocongkevinzhu1451Ай бұрын
valve subsidized steam deck and that work so i dont c that they cant subsidize the steam machine too if they make it. i agree they need to release the steamOS. but i believe valve is focusing now on the steamOS release then afterward they will release the steam machine once everything is done wit the steamOS. its jst a matter of time for the steam machine to come
@BerengalАй бұрын
@@haocongkevinzhu1451 The Steam Deck actually isn't good value outside of being a handheld gaming PC. The addition of the screen and controllers increases the value to gamers, but actually makes it worse for most non-gaming tasks while increasing the cost. There are a few exceptions though, and you see Steam Decks being used to control animatronics at Disney and fly drones in Ukraine. That's the type of issue you get if you subsidize an STB; there are way too many "off-label" uses for just a computer in a box.

I was a console gamer since gen 1 (pong), really got into it in gen 2 (Magnavox Odyssey2. I see you, Cary 👊), was first in line in my town for an original Playstation, took a road trip for a Playstation 2, and I almost always found a way to get every console of a generation. I actually have skipped this console generation entirely (unless you count Switch) and have not cared for a second. I'm still interested in what Nintendo does next (I am doing my best to separate the video game company from the brutally litigious corporation in my mind lol), but Valve seems to have stealth-flipped me like they did with Russ. @zero11010Ай бұрын
The biggest thing people complained about for the PS5 Pro was the price. $700 is a video card for high end gaming. Just the video card. But, $700 for the whole console is absurd? And virtually anyone who gets it already has the original PS5 to sell (I think Gamestop was buying them for like $300-400). If you spent $700 on a computer today ... for how many years do you think you'd be running the latest and greatest games at the highest graphics settings? Would you even be able to do it with that $700 computer on day 1? The biggest problems with the PS5 Pro would be: * it's releasing halfway through the life cycle of this generation of consoles. So, instead of it being good for 8+ years it's likely only good for 4-6 years. * there are few games at the release of the platform that take full advantage of what it can do.

@@zero11010 yeah and trust me, I'm a PC gamer first and foremost. I have my own rig built over the years to be a beast... Power users. Hell I don't even use Windows at all. Most consumers just see sticker prices and what they can play on it. If undercutting the PS5 price by a good margin is possible, you should, it'll compel the average consumer that just wants to buy the latest thing to play games on. Just make a more powerful Steam Deck in a console form factor price a hundred bucks or less than any other console out there and you're gonna make money. In my opinion at least.

I'm still to be convinced that I would want a box in the future though, if handheld PCs keep getting more and more powerful then a powerful SteamOS handheld would be the ultimate gaming device. And to me Robbit from Jumping Flash will always be the unofficial PlayStation mascot, none of the others have landed for me. Astrobot will never do it for me as a mascot, I look at Astrobot and I think of a home appliance and not video games.

$300 I don't think Valve will go set top box. But if they did it would be with SteamDeck 2, same hardware and lower price. I think they should do a SteamDeck no battery.
@arcadeportal32Ай бұрын
I would pick up a Steam OS box for the living room, I prob could see Valve completing with Sony on price. If they don't totally kill linux support on their new games, "as of right now, you don't need PSN on the deck" they definitely would make you log into PSN or require PSN+ to play it on a Steam Box and in turn Deck. Xbox I doubt cares as long as they are making a sale, I doubt they will be in the closed console market for very long... I really think it will be a hybrid system like the deck.

I just buy a mini PC called AtomMan G7 PT (I buy the Barebone and add m.2 PCIE 5 and 64 go of Ram DDR5) and install BAZZITE OS on it. If we exclude the Steamdeck, I don't know what would like more than a Steam Console than that. Just missing a Steam controller 2 that look like the Steamdeck with touch pads.
@bamcorpgaming5954Ай бұрын
It would have to be in line or at least somewhat close in price and performance to the modern consoles for me to consider a Steam Console. Until then give me steam OS so i can turn any of the spare PCs into steam consoles.
@thetargosАй бұрын
The bane of Steam hardware has been international availability, unlike Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo, for a winning console-like strategy, they certainly must figure out first their distribution strategy to satisfy the demand, just look how it is still IMPOSSIBLE to get a Steam Deck in LatAm and many other regions, where you can just buy any Sony or Microsoft or Nintendo product. They nailed the electronic games distribution but certainly have a record of falling short when it comes to hardware availability.

While I understand what Phawx is trying to say regarding exp for accessibility, the whole point of accessibility features is to help people for whom gameplay is too difficult. Punishing someone with a disability who uses accessibility as it was intended goes against the very principle of making a game accessible for all. It doesn't matter if others use it to make their gameplay easier as the default is too difficult. The git-good to get exp mentality spits in the face of what accessibility stands for.

Valve are not going to make a console for your TV, they wouldn't be able to subsidise the price with the games like the others can so they'd have to sell it at full price at which point you may as well just buy a PC, which most Steam users already have anyway.

I honestly don't see a world where they price it at $599-699 and it competes with with the PS5 Pro unless we're talking about a release that is 2+ years from now and they take a huge loss. Also no matter what price point if they put out a console Sony will stop dealing with them flat out. The Steam Deck gets a pass for them because it's not the same market, they will not play nice if Valve starts coming for their bag. That said I would just love to have a Steam Controller 2 that has the same layout as the Steam Deck.

My PC is basically a much more expensive and much less reliable video game console that also takes more space. Everything I do on a computer that matters happens on a Mac. I’m a software engineer doing web and app development. Virtually all of the work happens on Mac (basically every company in Silicon Valley hands you a MacBook Pro on day one). So, my real computer is my personal MacBook Pro. My PC is just a much more expensive and WAY less reliable gaming console. Want to guess how much more frequently my PC crashes than any Xbox, Nintendo, PlayStation, or any other console I’ve ever had? Want to guess how often I’ve had hardware failures on consoles over the last 30+ years of owning consoles? Want to guess how many times I’ve had hardware failures on a PC in that time? Want to guess how many problems I’ve had with drivers being out of date on PC vs console? How about how many times where you think to yourself … maybe I’ll just start over and reinstall the OS? Want to know how much effort goes into virus protection on a console? Want to know how much cheating happens in multiplayer on console (I’ll give you a hint, it only comes from crossplay PC players). Buy a console when it comes out and it’s generally a match for PC gaming at that time and less expensive. And, it’ll last roughly 10 years until the next generation comes out. You may have a PC last that long but you won’t do meaningful gaming on it at high graphics settings after a few years unless you’re replacing hardware.
@SeanFranchiseАй бұрын
There's so much to be said for PC gaming but everything you bring up about the convenience and reliability of consoles is often left out of the discussion, and is a super important consideration. I bought an Xbox Series X at launch because Xbox has traditionally been the closest thing to PC gaming you can get with a console, and I've been extremely happy outside of titles showing up late or not at all (FF VII Remake). The versatility and open-nature of PC (game availability, DIY launchers, emulation, etc.) always brings me back to it though, and I really hope that Valve or MS can find the right balance of openness and convenience that everyone seems be looking for.
@ThisisCitrusАй бұрын
That's some high tier cope. Almost everything you said can be proven false or heavily debated. Also everything than can be done on your MacBook could be done easier and faster on a good PC. But lets get into your points. "My PC crashes more than consoles" Then you have an issue with your PC that you aren't fixing, a software or hardware error. I haven't had a single PC crash in over a year and I use my PC for work and gaming a minimum of 12 hours a day. "Hardware errors on console are more rare than PC" Xbox Red Ring of Death begs to differ, PS3 Blue Ring of Death begs to differ, poor cooling in the PS4 begs to differ, stick drift on the Switch begs to differ. Hardware errors are at best more common on console and at worst equivalent to PCs. "My drivers are out of date" User error, there is ZERO chance you're an actual software engineer if you have issues updating your drivers. "Virus protection on console is easier" Windows Defender is enough to handle ALL virus detection these days, we no longer need extra stuff like AVG or Malwarebytes. "Cheating more common on PC" MAYBE this one is the only one that is close to true, but you would be surprised how easy it is to cheat on console also. "A console when it comes out will be a match for PC gaming and last for 10 years" This is one is just hilarious, since the PS5 Pro was announced that proves you basically wrong, and sure if you're okay with 30fps 1080p gaming for 10 years in the year 2024. But if you want to play games at 60fps that aren't a blurry mess, you get a PC. The 2070 Super came out in 2019 (before PS5) and outperforms the PS5 at release and still does to this day. Everything you say here is false.

I already bought their console for about 400. I've not played it undocked. So if they removed the screen and, I'd pay $200. But now days its novelty is worn off and im tired of great games with lame graphics (looking at you Vampire Survivor), it wouldn't oat more than $120 now. The pixel art doesn't do it anymore, so give me something that plays Diablo IV at 4k 120 Hz with ai rendered tween frames or upscale, or 60 Hz/fps without AI frames. Give me that for $400 and it'll play modern games of mediocre demand for 4 more years. That's basically my 2020 Asus G14 without keyboard and screen. That is wirth $400. It plays D4 just like I described. Itll do better if it was Linux Steam OS. I have a hard time to spend more because then its smarter to buy more expensive things in my life and i wont let my game only rig cut into the ither budgets. I have good computers, I don't need another. $200-400. If its only able to play 2D games, it's not worth more than a retro emulator to me.

Steam Console doesn’t need to exist. Now if they want to get into something where they are a new PC manufacturer that bakes Steam into it, ok, people would buy a new, solid PC. The problem comes from who they end up having make the computers and what happens if the QA on it craps the bed because all it would take is a fundamental break there to do some serious damage to the company.
