The launch of the Steam Deck in Australia is monumental! Finally, Valve is opening doors for Australian gamers to dive into this portable powerhouse. Sure, the price tag of AUD 1,499 might raise some eyebrows, but for what it offers-a portable PC gaming experience-it's worth the hype. What really excites me is Valve's commitment to expanding into more regions. Could this mean we’re closer to seeing it in Latin America or Africa? I hope so! Plus, with tools like Junk Store, the Steam Deck continues to reshape the gaming landscape, allowing users to break free from Steam's ecosystem. Thrilling times ahead!

I bought the Steam Deck for about $1200 a few months ago, importing it before its launch here in Australia. The official price here is $1049, so the extra costs came from customs, tax, and shipping. I also wish people would stop comparing the Steam Deck to a traditional generational console. It has the potential to last for years-possibly a decade-if you're into AA titles (like The Chant, Twin Mirror, Rollerdrome), low-spec indie games (Balatro, Vampire Survivors, Hades), and older AAA games from the 360/PS3 era (BioShock, Mass Effect, Deus Ex: Human Revolution). The Deck can play games at the current graphical level for as long as your device holds up, much like any other PC. For example, it has a platinum rating on ProtonDB for Rollerdrome, easily pushing past 60fps on my Deck. Meanwhile, my Xbox One X-the "most powerful console in the world" at one point-can't even run that game. In my opinion, if you're mainly looking to play demanding games like Cyberpunk 2077, Baldur's Gate 3, or Starfield, you're probably better off with a console or gaming PC. If that's all you play, you might not be as interested in the types of games that the Steam Deck really excels at.

Ive heard so many complaints about Alarmo and how it doesn’t work with a couple so can only be useful for single people. Guys. This plays Nintendo jingles. To me this feels directly aimed at older children. Kids who have their own bedroom, but who actually have to get up for school or work. Nintendo have been keen to stretch to a slightly older audience anyway and they’ve always been looking at getting you to think about games when you’re not typically gaming (Pokemon Go, Sleep etc etc)

29:37 farfetched prediction: with Nintendo slapping the world with DMCA takedowns and lawsuits, they are finally listening and providing their own retro streaming service through a new subscription accessible on not just switch hardware, but any device with an Internet connection. It was my understanding that the Alarmo would work as a regular alarm clock with more than one person in the room, but the special features wouldn't work. I don't even have a Switch, so it holds no interest for me. I think that the popularity of "open world" games has made publishers forget that linear games have their place as well. Just because open world games can be great doesn't mean I want every game I play to be open world. I especially am leery of games that were great as linear games going open world. It could be great, or it could end up ruining the game formula for the franchise and not work at all. I found it amusing when Cary pulled out the quote from _Maverick,_ "You'll be dead and I'll be happy."

I personally am happy that Red Dead Redemption is finally going to be available on PC. I played the game a few years after it first came out like sometime in 2014-2016 maybe. Got the original edition for like $20 used at GameStop back then but after playing maybe 7-10+ hours, I became disinterested for some unknown reason which is weird because I loved playing Activision's 2006 game Gun back in the day. The first game in the Read Dead series, Red Dead Revolver, came out before Gun but I missed out unfortunately. Can't really afford an Xbox Series X so Red Dead Redemption being released on Steam is great for me (and also I highly doubt my original Xbox 360 works anymore). I don't love the price though. $50 for it and the DLC is a bit much in 2024, especially since a year after Red Dead Redemption came out, the Game of the Year edition with DLC was released and originally sold for $60. Older games should not be sold close to original MSRP, especially since there are no new physical copies being made (other than Switch and PS4 editions), only digital ones and we are basically renting the license for the game. I hate the more modern Rockstar, I miss the old Rockstar

I think the price for the alarm clock is fair. You have to account for the Nintendo tax (name tax) that will bring up the price at least $20. Then there's just inflation on top of it. 5-10 years ago it would have been a $60ish probably which seems way more appropriate for what it is to me. Definitely not buying one but I understand the price of it.

Devs and engineers need to start being treated like Disney or Nintendo employees instead of outsourced contractors. There is a huge benefit to being a future proofed value as an employee that makes you want to invest knowledge into the company. If your position has a limited value, you are less likely to invest your entirety of knowledge or expertise into a project. The investment of your people is what creates the passion for the end goals. Great games sell themselves and companies need to start focusing in on the core passion behind creation and rewarding the people behind these “cubicles” that put their life on the back burner for a project because they know what they are doing is actually important. If they know they will be trimmed off the payroll after the game launches then why would they actually care. Take care of your employees and they will take care of your logo. Also they need to promote their own employees first before taking in these job hopping managers who have zero allegiance towards the investment of their staff. As soon as the waters get choppy they will jump ship and tank a team that needs a real leader who will invest in them. Companies are paying way too much money for a manager who wants a vacation home and some cushy corporate paid golfing lunch more than a successful team. These are the bad investments that companies make that can eat their own tail and tank a company. “A good tree starts at the roots”

I wonder what the world would have been like if MS would have embraced the talent and engines they got. All of these games developed on solid foundations that complemented the style of game that took off on it. They went to the indi and small developers and said something like: 'Look, we have the engine that made Skyrim and Doom and all of these others. You can use these engines for free and play with them. You want support? thats extra. You want to release the game you make in it? You release it on Xbox and Windows you get it just for sales and support cost. Then MS can take the revenue it makes from those and shove it into Creative Engine v2... IDtech 6 (or whatever)... and so on. Their platforms get sales, they have interested developers in making x style games using their engines, and now you have a talent pool you can recruit from that's familiar with these engines. Unreal Engine is having a lot of problems being asked to do everything including the kitchen sink. Whats going to happen when Epic decides to scale back and limit more what it does for its own internal priorities and cost savings?
