Love it or hate it, The Big Bang Theory is one of the biggest sitcoms of the last 15 years. So when CBS announced a spin-off, Young Sheldon, many fans were skeptical about whether it could live up to the original. Surprisingly, not only did Young Sheldon match the success of The Big Bang Theory, but many fans now consider it the superior show. It’s rare for a spin-off to outshine its predecessor-but even rarer is a spin-off getting another spin-off that actually works.
💬 Do you think Young Sheldon is better than The Big Bang Theory? Let us know in the comments!

The show works because the ensemble cast play really well off each other. While the family have their negative moments, and can be a little annoying, they feel like real people, and you can see how they shaped Sheldon to become the man he is by the time of "Big Bang Theory."

Possible unpopular opinion: I like this show more than the parent one. Maybe it's due to the delightful ensemble cast, the refreshing lack of laugh track, or the relatable family situations.

I think they made a lot of very good decisions. First of all, they didn’t just flanderize every character; they allowed each character to grow. They weren’t just like, “Oh, his father was a drunk guy in TBBT, so let’s make him a drunk, aggressive father.” Instead, they wanted to show him as a multifaceted character, and that happens with everyone. Also, they didn’t take the “Han Solo approach” of wanting to explain minimal details that nobody cared about, like “Oh, this guy goes solo, so he is Han Solo.” Instead, they actually developed important details throughout the series, such as Sheldon’s love for comic books. At first, they showed how he didn’t like them, which aligned with the personality Young Sheldon had. Then, they demonstrated how comic books and Tam became an escape for him, effectively explaining why he loved comic books so much. It wasn’t just, “Oh, then a comic book fell from the sky, and I loved them,” or some other nonsense like that. They also took the risk of changing the perspective that TBBT gave us on certain characters and situations, such as the father’s affair. If something didn’t work in TBBT, they didn’t hesitate to change it or present it in a different way while still keeping it somewhat connected to the original. In the end, they created their own show that stands on its own, you don’t need TBBT to understand or care about it. That’s why Young Sheldon is so great.
@bertdog2119

They could do so much with the other characters because they could take what was established by Sheldon in TBBT and reinterpret it. Sheldon was a child when these things happened and even though he’s a genius he doesn’t know everything and doesn’t always remember what exactly happened.

The spin-off worked because it was a sitcom of an older time like the Wonder Years that you mentioned. People liked those older sitcoms but that isn't what is on TV nowadays. As for the actor playing young Sheldon, he was okay in the first season but as he got older, he brought down the show - which just goes to show how important it was that it became a family sitcom rather than a show directly about Sheldon.

Not really seeing how the actor brought down the show, I mean his voice didn’t fit the character but it would be insane to fault him for that. His acting was consistently great. I get some people grew tired of Sheldon as a character but I don’t understand any frustration with Ian as an actor.
@Zeraw2
@Zeraw2 18 сағат бұрын
@@joshdeveaux8525 isn't that the point of sheldon's character? He became more annoying as he grew older. If he was the only focus, that could've made the show bad. But his family is there to offset him. Most of the time, in the later seasons, the scenes were great if he was not around.
@mborok

That’s what’s so brilliant, it shows how the child we meet in season 1 becomes the cold, closed-off character that Leonard first meets on TBBT. Sheldon becomes more unlikable when he goes to college, and at the same time his family starts falling apart. He retreats into himself and becomes more hostile. It’s the family that made him human. Later, it’s his second family, in the form of his friends (and especially Amy) that makes him human again.

I think it's partly because of how Sheldon was written at the start of Big Bang, they couldn't really evolve the character and had to keep him as a jerk, which stopped being funny when he stopped being a little kid and the series grew up from that humor. I liked the scenes when they showed Sheldon as vulnerable and how much he loves Missy, they could have worked on that. They could have showed Sheldon truly loving their siblings, and how the relationship with them deteriorate until he shuts everything down by the end. It's a shame, the actor did his best (the funeral episode was great) but the writers didn't knew what to do with him.

I don't plan to watch more, but it took my "this is going to suck" and turned into "this is actually a lot better than I expected" and I have to tip my hat to that. That is an interesting point, if kids of today actually watch YS. Do they? I wonder how they'd identify with the 80s lifestyle/values. A lot of the enjoyment I get from YS is the sets and props, which was my life in the 80s. The same telephones, typewriters, the Corningware I ate out of and my mom stlil has, and Tam's red Tupperware lunch set, I had that exact set! Someone worked really hard on providing props that only Gen X can appreciate. I had an Etch a Sketch, I had a calculator watch, I remember when Red Vines were sold in paper packaging and not plastic. Young Sheldon makes me feel old, but happy to be reminded of my young life. If kids are watching YS today, they don't get that spark of happiness when they see a telephone you can actually slam the receiver down in disgust.

I absolutely loathe Big Bang Theory. It has been described as "how dumb people think smart people are like" and this is so true. And that laugh track is god awful, watch one of those clips where they edit it out and this just becomes a horribly cringey and awkward conversation. But Young Sheldon actually was okay to watch and I found some of the jokes to be genuinely funny. The story is interesting as a concept, no laugh track to hide cheap and bad jokes and terrible writing is a big bonus, and the humor actually feels less "look at how nerdy we are!" and more like some genuinely funny jokes.

That means the actors have to pause for the laughs, and when you take the laughs out, it leaves long awkward pauses that makes it weird. Haven’t watched the full video, but I'm pretty sure a lot of it was down to everyone knowing who Sheldon turns out to be, so the audience didn't need to find him a compelling character and the writers could build the story around his family instead. It meant that most of the interactions in the show that mattered were the ones regular people could relate to and empathise with, and the writers handled these stories very well. Adult Sheldon Cooper is a jerk with a warped memory of his childhood. No one wants to rally around that, especially with how badly his character was flanderized in the later seasons.

There was a period of time when Young Sheldon was new, where everyone would dunk on the show for being something nobody asked for and being something nobody wanted. There was an ongoing rhetoric that poked fun at Young Sheldon's longevity by claiming the state of TV today has been reduced to lazy, repurposed and unoriginal slop and that we couldn't come up with anything more interesting than "it's Sheldon... but when he was young!" I was definitely part of that crowd, especially as someone who hated The Big Bang Theory. So color me totally surprised when I got sick with Covid and started watching it in the hope that it would bore me to sleep... I was so sick and so physically exhausted from coughing so hard that I was sure I could count "bazingas" to put me to sleep. Sadly, sleep wouldn't come to me because I was totally hooked! The show is goofy, but it's got a lot of heart. I really didn't expect a show that rose from the annoying and meanspirited ashes of The Big Bang Theory would be as good, engaging, and charming as it is!! ♥

When it first started it looked like any other show that would probably run for like 13 episodes and fade away, but instead it ran for 12 season and 12 years and was even given the vote of #1 comedy. The reason why is because of the good writing and the supporting characters. As the show evolved as did the character some for the better and some not. I agree. Took me a few years to give it a shot, but I really enjoyed the family dynamics of the show.

Yeah I have to admit I greatly prefer Young Sheldon to the big bang theory 😅 I didn't bother with it for a while because I assumed it would be more of the same but then I caught the tail end of an episode somewhere and went diving in 😂

So "Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage" is a spin-off of a spin-off, is there any others like that.

A few. Any NCIS show after the original, which was originally a spinoff from JAG. Legends of Tomorrow, which spunoff from The Flash, which spunoff from Arrow. Diagnosis Murder, which was a spinoff of Matlock spinoff Jake And The Fatman. A ton of stuff that spun off from Happy Days, which was a spinoff of Love, American Style. And a bunch more.

I watched Young Sheldon for a bit and since I had never watched The big bang theory, I went to check it out. I only watched 1 episode and really didn’t like it. As a somewhat nerdy woman, I liked neither the misogynie nor mocking the nerds. It felt very outdated.

I can say I didn't like TBBT when it first started airing actially hated the little bits and pieces I saw of it. I only got into it in 2019 when I was laid up with an leg injury and had watch just about everything I could. I started with the syndication episodes but then started to like it even though there were times I was shaking my head at some of the jokes or situations there were in. I gave Young Sheldon a try on streaming and really enjoyed it. Now, I am enjoying the new show. Funny how that worked out.

Great video. While I do not hate TBBT, there are some jokes that I find to be good, I do not like it. However Young Sheldon might have become one of my favorite TV show. Characters are indeed relatable, and there's something really beautiful about how this family is portrayed. All with their flaws, but all very loving nonetheless.

I think I watched Georgie and Mandy up to 4 - 5 episodes. I haven't chuckled once. His mother in law is sufferable, his father in law is absolutely no funny at all. Either he is just a push-over or he is a boss. His college in his father-in-law's store is forced, he is just planinly disrepectful. Georgie is supposed to be this big heart guy that picked the pieces of his family and carried on and the show decided to get him out of the house leaving his mom and sister alone, a prooved ensemble and ditched them for these average actors that don't know what they are doing. All I can think is that the old cast would cost too much and the studio said: Pick the people that were merely cameos, offer them far less money and make a show out of it. Maybe this show shouldn't have been a straight comedy, but a show about a family coming together after the tragic loss of their father, learning how to function without that authority or sweet shoulders they father provided. But that too much to expect from the guys that always spoiled emotional moments in The Big Bang Theory with an unfunny joke, like that time in which Sheldon said something really nice and meaninful to Howard after he lost his mom and they had to interrrupt with a crap line from Penny that completely spoiled the moment.

I don't think Penny ruined the moment, I reacted the same way as her watching that. She was just relieved

I was surprised how much I liked this show, given that I didn't like Big Bang. I think the characters were a lot more likable and the stories seemed more human instead of just being setups for jokes.

Genuinely HATED BBT lolol. I wasn’t offended by stereotypes or jokes, mind you. Moreso it was just so damn cliche, lazily written, and all of the characters (apart from Sheldon) were so painfully unlikable. Nerdstalgiac is actually pretty on the mark here in saying that people who hate BBT might like Young Sheldon. It’s night-and-day different in quality especially. There’s actual care placed into the stories, instead of reiterating tropes and lazy jokes. For a spinoff, it surpasses its origin immensely in quality alone.

Imo I dont like the format used in BBT, with the camera angles and the laugh track, it feels super staged. Whereas with Young Sheldon, it feels much more realistic and relatable, especially since most of the characters are normal people who you could easily see in your day-to-day life

I don’t like either show the only thing I did like was Georgie’s storyline when he got Mandy pregnant I literally watched just episodes about that because I respect how Georgie handled it all he didn’t really try to run from it he just stepped up as a dad

Wow a spin off of a spin off. And it did the same thing that younge Sheldon did: take a fan favorite (or couple in this instance) and do a different comedy show. I wonder if they’ll take it in a full house direction or more of a dramadey
