Ok so I haven’t looked into the story of Jerry’s divorce, but for context, prior to divorce laws getting changed in the US you needed some sort of “legitimate reason” to get divorced. This made it so people who simply didn’t wanna be together anymore basically had to lie and say that one of the partners had committed some form of marital betrayal, just as negligence and cruelty I’m not saying he didn’t actually do that, because I don’t know since I didn’t look into it at all, but there is the chance that they had simply separated already and were just giving any reason to be able to legally divorce. This would explain why he didn’t contest the claims at all, since most men would probably wanna fight claims of extreme cruelty even if they did let the divorce go through

@@lucillefrancois150 makes sense. He brought a woman back to his apartment who he didn't leave with. Either she had no issue with sleeping with a married man or his wife was not there. This whole story reminds me of the “onion” revealed in the recent release of “The Beatles: Get Back”. Because of Peter Jackson’s delivery of hours of largely uncut and previously unreleased archive footage, we just learned that SO MUCH of the narrative around the Beatles was just flat out wrong and spun from cherry picked inference. As much as Scott jokes about “no content, only context”, I think we’re in the age of realizing that context is like 90% of anyway and brings us closer to knowing the real story (or at least the possibility that the real story isn’t even on our radar because we weren’t there).

I just went through a divorce last year. I've been dying inside for a longer than that. When she left, it was for someone else. Honestly, your video kind of hurt me for a while, but thinking about it, I only saw things in my story. The fact is she wasn't happy with me. So I understand that in her story maybe she is happy. Maybe in the end, it was never really my story. Maybe the story was hers. I know I miss my wife, and I know I hurt a little bit every day... Some days more than others, but in the end someone is happy. And in life, that can be hard to come by. I can't stay upset about her leaving, knowing that she is happy in the end. I spent 13 years trying to give her happiness. Now she has it, and all it took was my stepping aside. It still sucks a lot, though.

I find it interesting that we're looking at everyone else's perspective as positive, but did we forget that Jerry left his wife and son for a model he met at a party? What about their perspective? Sure, we can all agree that Joe probably didn't have such a terrible love life or was fine with his life style, but making it out like the other two found their "true loves" and didn't just wreck a marriage is pretty misleading and manipulative.
@randomwerewolf1099
@randomwerewolf1099 2 жыл бұрын
It's also mentioned that we don't know what their marriage was like. Was it good, bad, was it just time to end the relationship? It probably wasn't just a middle-aged fling on Jerry's part given he spent the rest of his life with "the model he met at a party". Their perspective isn't given because we don't know what their perspective was.

It's not 'assume the best' or 'assume the worst,' it's 'don't assume.' Surrendering legal custody can mean a lot of things; not all parents who do so, or even most, are necessarily "deadbeats," which implies explicit abandonment. The demand for historical figures to be either heroes or villains needs to go away, especially in cases like this where we have so little information.

You can't know how this marriage turned out, maybe it just wasn't working and Jerry's cheating was a trigger for a really necessary divorce. Most of the time marriages do not end up being for life and are stormy and unhealthy for the family, there is no harm that does not come with good as the saying goes. We should stop living with this idea that marriage should be permanent and sacred and untouchable.

The segment about your feelings as a young nerd with unrequited desires and how it framed your uninterested crushes as villainous got me thinking about my own perspective on those situations. I'm a female geek raised in a conservative religious culture, and every time I've turned a man down or broken off a relationship--even when I was turning him down because he was 30 years older and married, even when I was breaking it off because of abuse that threatened my life--I've villainized myself. I was taught to do that. I was taught that women who don't give men what they want are evil, full stop, and for a long time I viewed myself as awful and unlovable because I couldn't meet those impossible standards. (Plus I had been told all my life that I was ugly and that nobody would ever like a girl who read comics. Or, you know, read.) So whenever I was the one being rejected--and yeah, that happened plenty of times--I took it in stride because really, who could blame a guy for going with a better option? It didn't help that I was nearly 30 before I learned about the asexual spectrum and why I was so rarely interested in any of the strangers trying to chat me up. But it's still interesting to me that I had a pretty similar experience to Scott's and I one thousand percent villainized myself for it instead of anyone else. Anyway, I've done years of therapy since then, realized I'm actually a pretty okay human and also qu**r as a three-dollar bill in a couple of directions, and tl;dr kinda looking forward to trying to date other women in the next few years. Also, hearing that Joe Shuster was good-looking, very private, briefly linked to a lot of gorgeous women, and "mysteriously" single for much of his life in the mid-20th century made my queerdar go off ping. I'm just saying...I wouldn't tell him he can't sit at the rainbow table with me.

Awesome. Also, for my part, I'm not really sad or bitter on Valentine's Day, despite never having a more-than-friend and being a fairly romantic person. Just hang out with friends, be happy that others are happy, and know there's always the future. _Also I can write novel after novel of couples ending up happily, and take romantic digital photos, and that's almost half as good, right?_ Happy belated Day to you too! @bobcarn
@bobcarn 2 жыл бұрын
@@makaiev I would not consider him a bad Superman at all. He had all of the qualities Superman is supposed to have. I think the main problem people see is because of the time it was made. This was the early 90s, TV was only still in the infancy of shifting away from the glossy, artificial melodramatic look of the 80s, special effects were more expensive and not as good, and there was less experience portraying super-powered characters in media. How to write and portray a superhero was something producers were still learning. Before this, they just had the Superboy series and Wonder Woman and The Hulk (and don't forget Batman of the 60s). Heroes in those series were watered down even more to fit into the budgets they had. Compare Lois and Clark to The Flash (which was also an early 90s series), and you'll see they already started to learn more and improved on what they did in the 70s and 80s. Yes, it appears dated, but portraying Superman, or any superhero at that time, came with a learning curve. It's because of Lois and Clark that we eventually got Smallville (which was better, but still had some issues). What they learned from Smallville eventually brought us Arrrow and The Flash and Supergirl. Lois and Clark was very typical of the shows you got in that time period, and the problems with it aren't unique to that show but existed across TV in general. One thing I liked from Lois and Clark was how well the leads portrayed their characters. Both leads brought very nice traits to their characters.

That offhand remark about three friendzone threw me off. I've never viewed that word as implying that someone owes you their love. You like them, but the see you only as a friend. The word for this form of rejection is "friendzone." You then move on and find someone else. IDK just a weird little thing.

Definitely getting the fetish art book the first chance I get (purely for historical appreciation, I assure you). Honestly, I always find it really great whenever you mention a new book, since early comic book history is such a fascinating subject. So, thanks for the recommendations!

I don't celebrate Valentines Day (I'm on the asexual spectrum and firmly aromantic), but, if I was allosexual, I would call it "Alentines Ay" (you can fill in the joke if you want). Anyway, always excited when you upload, but please don't get overly stressed when you go over your deadlines. We know that any extra wait will just increase the quality of the context, I mean... content.

Or do what they do in Latin American countries. Valentine's day is also called "El Día del Amor y Amistad" which translates to Love and Friendship day. It not just about romantic love but the day also includes Platonic relationships with friends. It very common to go out and celebrate the holiday with friends.

Comic editors need to get over this weird idea you cannot tell interesting stories with married characters. Along with wanting revert everything back to how they remember it.

@@101Mant the "back in my day" mentality. It really hinders the growth of the comic industry and causes conflict between different readership generations. Especially the shippers.
