Harley is such a great character that now just seems to be all about tiny clothes and being silly and hot, when she is indeed a smart woman with huge manipulative skills that lived trough an abusive relationship she sometimes falls back into.

The thing about her and that is that she could be hot and smart at the same time.....I mean, she's a super villain, she doesn't give two craps.

+luigi she could and she would be awesome. but at best she looks cunning. like they can't manage a woman who is not only badass and sexy but also smart even if her bubbly personality wont always show it.

Just for the record, when I said that Arleen Sorkin voiced Harley Quinn for decades, I didn't mean she was the ONLY one to voice her. Of course Tara Strong has voiced Harley in many cartoons, games, and I believe even the live-action cameo on Arrow, but Sorkin has also been there portraying Harley as well!

Darryl Jack Nah Tara strong for me sounded annoying as Harley like some little girl instead of a grown woman Hyden Welch voices her way better, Assault on Arkham was based on the rebooted version of the Suicide Squad, Batman V Superman was based of the Dark Knight Returns not Injustice.

I love her to bits. Yeah she's a bit more revealing and sometimes a bit more crazy at times. But as far as I can tell, she mostly flaunts her sexyness. She's not a total stereotype bombshell. She still has class, humanity, and morals. She does use her sexyness to her advantage however for personal gain, like convincing the teacher to give her a better grade so she could pass. In the suicide squad film, she was just as crazy and zany. Just because she wears different outfits that are more revealing, and changed her color scheme to red and blue instead of red and black, doesn't mean she isn't Harley Like, seriously guys, chill out. Characters change and grow for better or worse. I won't lie though, certain versions do bother me, but not every single one. Harley Quinn is wonderful and very lovable.

at least that version made her realize the joker was an abusive prick and we see her give his alabaster ass a good whupping in issue 24, honestly given how the Jay leto joker looks like he might be the most over the top but outright violent and dangerous version of the joker (think the Brian Azzerello joker novel joker) I hope they base harley off her new 52 version if only because I think she's better on her own without that killer clown constantly abusing and hurting her: ( I can forgive her trying to be DC's deadpool of iT means she's nobody's punching bag anymore
@SillehKitty
@SillehKitty 8 жыл бұрын
Harley had always known the Joker was abusive, she wasn't blind to it. She was a willing participant in the abuse and gladly returned it to the Joker. They have a toxic relationship but they both knew it for what it was and they happily went around manipulating and trying to kill each other. Harley doesn't want someone who isn't the Joker, there was a comic in which the Joker was temporarily cured of his "insanity" and because of this he was romancing Harley and treating her "right" and she couldn't stand it! She loves the Joker for what he is. Harley Quinn is not a victim don't treat her like one. These characters are villains they kill people for fun so it isn't all too surprising that their relationship is mutually abusive. The new 52 didn't make Harley more aware of her abusive relationship she's always been aware and she likes it that way. Harley isn't necessarily better without the Joker because she doesn't really make sense without him.

Becks Gealtachta in usse 24 she beat the loving hell out of him and bit his lip off, telling him to stay as far away from her and he didn't she'd kill him...honestly i like that she did that and i hope SS doesn't regress her back into the role of the relationship they had before.
@SillehKitty
@SillehKitty 8 жыл бұрын
New 52 shouldn't be your source material when it comes to the Joker and Harley's relationship because they're writing her as a victim which she is not and never has been. Just because she's in that relationship with the Joker doesn't mean she isn't strong and independent she is all of those things and more. Her current solo series is a rip off and severely dumbed down version of her original solo series from the early 2000's. New 52 has removed all of the elements that made Harley unique and popular in the first place and only focuses on one aspect of her character. As someone who has been in toxic and abusive relationships I was able to relate to Harley and connect with her character very deeply. But now what they are doing with her is just a slap to the face. If DC wanted a character that was struggling to overcome an abusive relationship and be an anti hero then they should have made a new character; instead of drastically altering a once amazingly complex character to the point that it is no longer the same character.

+creshiell She would also have to change her name since Joker gave her the "Harley Quinn" persona if she wants to completely separate herself from him. If Dick Grayson can step away from Batman's shadow by becoming Nightwing, why can't Harley?
@DeKoTree
@DeKoTree 8 жыл бұрын
+RectonPunch because Harley's damage goes far deeper than nightwing and batman hers is well it's psychological damage, jokers bad for her, she knows he's bad for her but she can't get away, it's abuse and unless you have ever been in a abusive relationship of a similar caliber it's very difficult to understand she's trying to peel herself away but there are still echoes and bruises stuff she's had for so long she doesn't know how to live without
@RectonPunch
@RectonPunch 8 жыл бұрын
+DeKuTree I agree with her not being able to really escape her past. It's part of the character and her being away from Joker just won't happen. The relationship is abusive but what I think people refuse to acknowledge is that the relationship is mutually abusive and both abuse one another quite frequently. It isn't healthy and Harley is arguably just as bad as Joker when it comes to their crimes and other activities. She's a willing participant of the abusive relationship. Joker did not force her to be anything. Harley Quinn is who she is. I just think Harley is an easier character to sympathize with and people are convinced she can escape The Joker when in reality Joker is what helped define her and make her who she is.

+itsinmyvein But when its harleys first time in a live action movie and you supposedly add "daddy's little monster" on her t shirt for one of her costumes and the character herself has a scene where she balls up the classic suit and throws it on the ground in exchange for the "shorts", then you know that somethings wrong and is counted as unworthy.

Personally I actually hate Suicide Squad. It has completely ruined every character. Especially Harley.. First of all, Harley is short for Harlequin. Google Harlequin and it will say something to do with a mime.. Now even though Harley doesnt completely represent a mine, she does follow by the description of.. Jester, usually wearing geometrical shapes. Her diamonds. The meaning for her clothes was that she would be Jokers puppet, she loved him.. and he abused her. And for some people that was an amazing love story for.. Two serial killers. Now this new Suicide squad has done its best to change every little bit about Harley as possible.. Right down to her backstory. Harley was the cutre character.. She was the only female villain that wasnt fully known for her flirty personality and amazing body. In short, back then Harley wasnt a slut. Now all the fan art and clips of her and just her posing or blowing gum.. Or at a strip club. Harley isnt a hoe.. She wears a simple, but awesome Jester costume. I hate the fact that 90 percent of "Halrey Quinn fans" dont even recognize or know her backstory properly just because the Suicide squad has completely ruined and trashed it. Why did you hgave to change the story?! Harley wouldnt sit in prison waiting for Joker to resue her.. Twice. Joker wouldnt go to full lenths to do that. And he wouldnt have to, as the real Halrey can take care of herself.

The version of Harley that has always held a special place in my heart is from the animated series called "The Batman." A slightly altered version of her backstory with her being a tv love therapist that tanks after she insulted Bruce Wayne. Joker, who was a loyal fan to the show, swoops in and saves her from her funk and shows her a fun night on the town filled with mayhem and destruction. When encountering Batman she embraces her new role as Harley Quinn and with a swish of her long belled hat she defends her Puddin with everything she's got. She's always been my favorite super villain and I'll always find that version of her to be my all time favorite.

I hate how some people say they love Harley when they're talking about the suicide squad Harley, cause it's like, that's not even the real harley that we've come to know and love, I mean, they changed two of the biggest things that make Harley Harley, her color combo and her accent. I'll admit that I'm being petty/picky, but I'm seriously disappointed that Harley Quinn doesn't have her gun maul accent in the movie. I'm sure Margot Robbie has done a great job portraying her, and I respect that the accent may not have fit the director's vision for the character, but an accent-less Harley just ain't for me. Classic harley is perfect. No other harley can beat her. Not even the suicide squad version because in the classic she is actually is a clown and she ACTUALLY sticks to her given namesake. Shes named after Harlequin the clown so why not be a clown? "Harley's story is about her relationships - not just with [Joker], but finding herself and her independence" - Margot Robbie.... Excuse you margot... so you mean that by finding herself and her independence she has to sleep with other guys, wear less clothing like the whole "daddy's little monster" t shirt costume (which is completely not sexual am i right?), misuse her namesake and be referred to as a feminist? (not every female comic book character should be labeled as a feminist.) Nah i dont think so Margot and the New 52, you got it all wrong... For harleys first time in a live action movie; why can we try something like with Jack Nicholsons joker (classic dapper) and then move/d on to something a bit new with heath ledgers joker (dark, edgy and dapper)? So harley can get some actual recognition with out being labeled as a slut or a whore "*whorley quinn*"! Come on DC where is the clown jestress that we all know and love? Stop trying to turn her into something else.

Eh if I recall it right, her most up to date origin is her acting as an inmate to get better research opportunities. She then fell in love with Joker and was locked up as a real inmate, proceeding to kill everyone with Joker and becoming Harley Quinn. Later killing many people while looking for Joker, which led to Black Canary arresting her. She was then tortured to test if she's good enough for the Suicide Squad/Task Force X and eventually became the first member to ever escape the squad and be the one who made the plans and helped her teammates escape once again. Harley Quinn also developed a relationship with Deadshot.

"My fault. I didn't get the joke" this line sends shivers down my spine. It was in the episode mad love and it's freakin fantastic. Showing joker and Harley's relationship as an allegory of very real abusive relationships (relationships I have some unfortunate familiarity with).......in a cartoon about a man in a bat costume beating up evil clowns. It's a good episode is what I'm saying

Back in the 1970s, in one of the "100-Pages" editions of "Justice League Of America", there was a reprinted story from "All Star Comics" from 1944 (I think), about the Justice Society taking on the Injustice Society, made up of a collection of supervillains, like The Icicle, and The Fiddler (a Flash villain). They were trying to steal various patriotic symbols, like the Liberty Bell, which was being transported on "The Liberty Train". A female villain character named Harlequin was caught up in all the action. Black Canary also appeared in the story, and eventually joined the Justice Society at the end of the story. Perhaps you can discuss the history of this "Golden Age" Harlequin in one of your video presentations. It would be very informative for your younger viewers.

I just found out from a video here on KZbin, that the Golden Age Harlequin was an enemy of the Golden Age Green Lantern. There is a video here on KZbin, showing panels from "Green Lantern" Number 31. And there are probably more appearances of her in "All American Comics" as well.

Yes, she was certainly an interesting character, but a completely different one, of course. I would love to see him do more episodes on Golden and Silver Age stories and characters. One episode I *really* want him to focus on in depth if he does go back to those eras is the swapping and sharing of certain characters between Marvel, DC (and pre-DC), and occasionally other comic companies. Its something I'm fascinated in, but admittedly have little knowledge about. I do know that, unless they changed it and I didn't catch that, Steven Strange can canonically switch between the two "and other universes" at will (though for obvious reasons he doesn't do so often).

Basically, the Golden Age Harlequin was Green Lantern's Joker and Catwoman combined. She was his forbidden love interest. Her sole reason becoming a crook was to keep GL interested in her (and he always "allowed" her to escape). Ironically, as Molly Mayne she was Alan Scott's secretary and they clashed repeatedly without either recognizing the other in their costumed identities. In the 1980's DC retconned it so that Molly had his secret figured out years ago, which paved the way for them to finally marry.

Thanks for running through her rise to fame-I wasn't aware of about half of that. Harley is one of my favorite characters when she's written correctly, which to be fair, is more often than not from what I have seen (leaving aside that whole campaign and contest to kill her off). I love pretty much any story where she gets to be a tragic but fun character who gets to do her own thing but is forever tied to the Joker, whether she wants to be or not (which tends to flip-flop). I don't like any story where she's basically just a henchman who gets psychologically and physically abused constantly. Yes, her mind was warped by the Joker into Harley Quinn in the first place, and I really like that origin-I think it fits best. But that doesn't mean I want to see her crying and beaten half of the time she's seen. The tragedy should be there, but it should be in their twisted relationship and occasional fear of his anger when plans fail (like all of the people that work with him fear), but not a constant abuse story. Also, I didn't like the Suicide Squad animated movie for many reasons, but Harleys portrayal most of all. It wasn't one thing but a series of things. (SPOILERS FOR HER CHARACTER IN THAT ANIMATED MOVIE) She was smart enough to get through Arkham and appease the Joker, yet she acted like an airhead throughout the rest of it (inconsistency), She was more sex-oriented than flirty (which I can see her being sex-oriented in certain scenarios, but it would breed from her flirtatiousness and her aptness for being a hopeless romantic and not hit so suddenly), and she grabbed her hammer, which was most certainly fine, but ignored the other really useful gadgets from other incarcerated people and didn't even look for a Joker box, which she would have loved to take with her because she knows how to use his gadgets and wanted to get back at him in that movie. All in all, she was a caricature of her own already extreme character, and an inconsistent one, at that. (END SPOILERS FOR THE ANIMATED MOVIE) As for the new movie, I haven't seen it yet, but I'm hoping for good things despite how little they show of her (every scene was showing that she's fun loving, flexible, or flirtatious, which is fine, but we didn't see much of her actual role...which is preferred over the trailer giving me the whole story). I approve, but its still a fact that I can't judge from that. All in all, I love Harley Quinn and the Joker, and I think the two make for a fun and twisted time apart, and even more so when they're with each other.

I would love to see more origin stories of the black female comic characters ie: Nubia(wonder woman's twin sister stolen by God Aries,or Mars), Or the OG Captain Marvel, Monica Rambeau,Vixen,Misty knight,Karen Beecher a.k.a Bumblebee. I'm just throwing out a few to getcha started. Great vid,awesome content. Keep up the great work.

In her new series, Palmiotti & Conner (& Hardin & Timms) periodically change up her look. She always has the black and red motif, but she wears slacks, less revealing tops, and in one issue a bowling uniform. There's also the second Valentine's Day Special where she wore an elegant blue gown to bid at a charity auction for a date with Bruce Wayne.

It's all by Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti, so the writing is pretty good. I enjoy it, anyway. As for how she gets around without getting arrested, no idea. Maybe she's still declared legally sane (and not responsible for past crimes). Maybe New York cops in her universe are that lazy and/or corrupt. (Plus, she's white. Really white.) Maybe she dwells in a Johnny the Homicidal Maniac zone where nothing she does comes back on her (well, until the last few issues).

Arkham City and Arkham Knight Harley is probably the best represented version of her. She loses Joker and goes through hell to try to get Batman to pay for his death, then finds hope with the 4 Joker copies only to have them all die because Batman is the 5th one and has the strongest Joker in him. She loses her Puddin' twice and refuses to believe that he's stuck inside Batman. Also, the alternate ending of Arkham City adds even more to it when she's singing to a baby which is assumed hers. Oh, and another Harley worth mentioning is the Robot Chicken DC special one. Fucking 10/10.

1st Thank goodness you finally brought up the point that Joker came to be after falling into a vat of chemicals at Ace Chemicals. One of the reasons I liked the game Arkham Origins was that after Batman captures The Joker ( I've always liked the fact that he is referred to as The Joker more often than Joker with an over emphasis on The ) he is brought in to be analyzed by Dr. Quinzel. During said analysis we get to see The Joker as a failed stand-up comic ( where you suddenly realize you have to fight!) and the Red Hood eventually falling into the chemicals. THAT is the real Joker, not someone whose mouth was cut and wears make-up as Heath Ledger in that movie. I can't tell you how many fans were both disappointed and upset about that. 2nd thanks for finally giving us the answer to " How did Quinn get her physical prowess?" I've loved watching her in all the Arkham games. From Asylum with the hilarious one punch defeat by the Bat. Up to Knight where we actually get to play Harley where she is literally talking to herself and has an awesome arsenal of moves and weapons. Quinn, just as with the Joker, is perfect in the games. Unfortunately, she is mishandled in the movies just as the Joker has been in EVERY film. Oh yeah, about all the hoopla/buzz surrounding Suicide Squad. Not all of it was good. If it was, the film wouldn't have have had to be reedited and the release date pushed back. Then there's Leto, the worst Joker ever...except for Jack. I don't think there will ever be anything worse than Jack's FAT Joker.

To me, Harley Quinn is a great character, but she was just so uninspiring in those Arkham games. Batman, Joker, and Freeze get all the good writing and Harley just gets a trampy costume and nothing to do but whine and be defeated by Batman.

My preference go to classique Harley with the jester costume (love the visual, it's less generic than the new 52 biker chick costume). She's better as a goofy, unhinged character with a big heart and an hidden brain. Free chaos more than real Evil. One thing that is missing from the recap might be the serum Ivy inject her with that makes Harley more durable, imune to poisons and stronger. It's a detail often left out that were added when she appear in the comics. I always found it gave her a "cartoon-like" way of bouncing back after strikes.

Very interesting! However, about Harley’s voice... I don’t think Sorkin is doing an over-the-top version of her own voice. Rather, it’s an impression of actress Judy Holliday from the 1950 movie “Born Yesterday.” Holliday won an Oscar for her performance as a “dumb blonde” who gets an education. Her distinctive voice and accent were widely imitated back in The Day. Sorkin appears very briefly in the 1991 movie “Oscar,” where she plays gangster’s manicurist. She has one line. If you close your eyes, it sounds just like Harley Quinn.

A great episode about a great character. Though a small side note, as much as Arleen deserves the credit for voicing and inspiring Harley's creation, she has since retired the role to Tara Strong, an unbelievably talented voice actress who despite very having played many UNHarley sounding voice roles, is in my opinion nearly identical to Arleen's performance. Honestly, she deserves as much credit for continuing Harley's legacy in DC's extended media.

I am not sure where you got your information on the characters inspiration but the character is actually based on the comedienne Gracie Allen from the comedy duo Burns and Allen. The reason she was added to the series is that Joker needed a partner to set-up jokes and allow him to have exposition dialogue and it would be off to have him treating henchmen as equals. There are plenty of Burns and Allen videos on youtube so I suggest reviewing them. Also, many years ago Mark Hamill gave an interview where he explains the origin of Harley Quinn and walks the viewer through the creation steps of the character. Much of the info you are spouting is set after the creation after some lesser writers got a chance to write the character.

I'm so confused, and no ones mentioning my problem. How is the origin for Harley in suicide squad is the one where she gets thrown into the vat of chemicals and has her skin bleached and yet her "skin" in the trailer is smudged like makeup, and she doesn't have her makeup on in other scenes proving it is makeup? Evidently it is makeup, and yet her origin is the one where her skin is indeed bleached
@SuperShanko

If I'm reading this right, you're implying that her skin is bleached yet smudges, right? Well, to answer that her skin, as in her Caucasian skin had been bleach a few notches, but she hasn't been given the paint job (Nicholson) Joker has. Go see the first trailer and you'll see her all washed out with no makeup and she's quite pale. After that her lips and such is indeed regular applied makeup.

Actually that's the other way around. Harley was created for the BATMAN TAS show. That episode was adapted into the comic a number of years later. (Yes, I either heard him wrong or he corrected himself later in the episode. Moving on.) Harley Quinn is one of the most commonly listed Comic characters of those created for the TV before the comic. Also to get Harley away from her "battered wife" semblance, her relationship with the Joker produced, she was altered to basically become a DC's version of Deadpool, at least in temperament. But the differences in that temperament vary widely. Where the Joker and Deadpool are considered "super sane", being the only characters who are believed to actually be aware they are comic book characters, Harley Quinn is a "strong" woman who doesn't give a flip or is borderline insane. Not actually as she can apparently turn it on or off and change the intensity of that insanity depending on her mood and/or situation. Gwenpool? MARVEL's version of Harley Quinn but closer to Deadpool than DC'S current version of Harley Quinn. As so she is from an alternate dimension that knows the entire MARVEL Universe as comics, and she was a huge fan, and so knows nearly everything about them and what to do. She has no powers, just knowledge and very slowly waning euphoria about getting to live in her favorite universe and the realities of it, and the fact it is steadily changing, catches up to her. Like her or not, Gwenpool does have ONE thing on Harley Quinn right now: Gwenpool is actually cute, if a bit "jailbaity". Harley used to be cute when she worn that fool body clown suit. Now? A bit slutty and getting worse, as time goes on.

You forgot a few appearances like birds of arkham, though out of all the appearances I prefer new 52 due to one of the issues finally resolving the decades old relationship with the joker. But I will say out of all the animated and videogame tie ins I will have to say Tara strong did an excellent job voicing Harley.
