8:27 This is sort of misleading, because Matrix federates, and Revolt doesn't. The difference is: *you can message anyone from any matrix homeserver, from your own matrix homeserver, and you can join a room hosted on any matrix homeserver, from your own matrix homeserver*. Revolt doesn't do that - if I'm on my own Revolt instance, and someone else is on the official Revolt instance, I can't talk to them, or join their servers.

matrix is fast when you consider that its e2e. A whatsapp/signal/similar chat, is just a chat, usually with few people. Telegram groups are not e2e by default and idk if the massive groups can even be made into "secret chats". A matrix server can have many channels. Its pretty much unheard of having a e2e multi-room server. Definitely not saying that there isn't room for improvement. Its already pretty damn amazing it works at all. No clue why Revolt didn't just use Matrix and make a better UX. Its going to be a massive undertaking making it e2e. e2e doesn't mean the server has an easier job, far from it. Loads of cryptography needs to happen on the server to ensure receivers' are able to read all senders' messages. While the server can't, but it still needs to know if the message arrived correctly.

After Tencent acquired a big share of Discord they are now legally obligated to share their info with the chinese government if asked to. And they will. So alternatives are certainly needed. However, Discord is so integrated in all kinds of games. So many mobile games even have an in-game button to easily access it's Discord channel. Just the sheer amount of channels and communities there and how integrated it has become for ALL sorts of games makes it very hard to imagine it being replaced as the goto app for most gaming communities.

It is a crime that teamspeak and mumble aren’t in a video about *nerdy* discord alternatives. To give a quick run through, they are almost the same thing, but I know teamspeak better so I’m gonna list a few things from that specifically. Teamspeak is a bit harder to setup than discord, with the lack of in browser options. However what it lacks in ease of use it makes up for a LOT in number of settings, it’s not too bad to find the one you’re looking for but the number of options is good for more power user type people. In terms of features it has voice, text, and files (except mumble doesn’t have file sharing) which is pretty standard, directional audio is also there for all games that support it, and if a game doesn’t support it by default like minecraft you can make mods (depending on the game) to add support. You can also add encryption if you feel the need (or mumble has encryption by default) and self host a server so you don’t have to go through any server corps if you don’t want to. To my understanding mumble also has a server browser or on both you can connect to private servers via IP and password. All in all they are both good options, and while here it looks like mumble has a lot for features than teamspeak, they both are about equal and if you have an issue you can (I think this is also on mumble, but I don’t remember) add community made addons

i love the concept behind matrix, but i find it's really hard to get into. there's not a whole lot of UX consistency across clients, unlike how apps like web browsers all have a very familiar interface despite being different clients for the same HTTP/S protocol. also, DMs aren't really a thing in matrix afaik. you have to create a private room with one person in it. i understand why DMs aren't in the protocol spec, since its "topologically" identical to 2-person private rooms, but it would just be nice to have like a direct p2p messaging thing, where the homeserver can obfuscate your IP addresses.
