To be fair here... Investing in a company doesn't automatically mean they have a direct say in all decisions a company makes. They may hold shares and therefore have a voice in making decisions, but there still can (and probs will) be some autonamy behind the company. The share holders can suggest features and changes, but afaik they can't enforce it to be done, especially when the change would break existing law, which for Discord - a company located in the US - would mean issues if they actually record messages, voice calls and screen shares without the users knowledge beforehand. There is a reason support services through phone tell you beforehand that the session may get recorded for "training purposes" as not disclosing this beforehand would open them up for lawsuits because of violation of privacy (That's my knowledge as someone living in Europe, so the US may be different, tho Discord has in the past adjusted their ToS and Privacy Policy to follow data regulations in Europe, so this may also apply to them). tl;dr: Investing money and/or holding shares != control over the company automatically.

Please do a video on Matrix. I've been looking at it over the last few days, but I came to my usual conclusion of "Yeah there's no point in even trying to switch when literally everyone I know already uses Discord", as I did with Gilded and Revolt. But I feel like you have such a good following and reputation when it comes to Discord that you might be able to get it going or at least give people like me a video to show my friends to persuade them to make the swap Also, off-topic but I'm curious; do you have any plans for what your channel will become in a universe where this Discord content no longer gets the views? Don't know about everyone else, but in my head you're "the Discord guy". At this rate I'll be sticking around no matter what, but if people stop caring about Discord then I really hope you can keep going in some way

Matrix video is already made and scheduled to go up wednesday. Ive been using Matrix for almost a year now, I have ended up ditching all other means of IM. Its just too good. I left Telegram, for example, due to having to need a phone number requirement back at a time where money was thin and couldnt afford to have one. Telegram forces you to keep up with your number because if a new user requests your number, you have 14 days to verify "this is still my number, not theirs" and if you cant, you basically get locked out of Telegram until you get a new one.

I'm hopeful that as a society we're starting to care enough about online privacy that things will start to swing in the other direction. Where do you get that optimism from? When it comes to computers (including smartphones), people are generally illiterate and expect convenience. You know, they don't need to know how a car works to drive one. When some people fall for a sponsored scam link on Google and their AV goes off, they will disable the AV because "it was annoying and didn't let me do things". We'd need to make IT a mandatory class early on, so teens grow up with some fundamental knowledge and even then we're decades behind. Corporations are better at finding new exploits, than we are to fight back.

@@fonesrphunny7242 Well, my mother is far from tech literate and she's figured out that Facebook and Google are trying to spy on her and use her data to target ads. Look, I know you want to be fair and defend discord, but using the argument "Oh, you're a good person not doing anything bad and not an enemy of the CCP so you shouldn't have anything to be concerned about" is not good in my opinion. And I hate/despise it. Sometimes it's okay to not defend the garbage heap that has China's fingers wriggling around in it and just let it happen. Privacy is still privacy. Good or bad actions doesn't matter, it's the same reason there's no (or shouldn't be any) cameras in bathrooms. "You aren't doing anything bad so why should you be concerned?" Being recorded while using the bathroom is just weird, creepy, and uncomfortable. That's the point. It's weird and uncomfortable regardless. And not to mention, at any point in time the CCP can just flip like a switch and literally anyone anywhere can be an enemy of the CCP for whatever reason at anytime. Say something they don't like or agree with? Congratulations! You are now an enemy or will be treated like one. Also if your government pisses them off, well congrats! You're all now their enemy. Please at least try to take privacy seriously and not just stand with "oh you're not doing anything bad, don't be concerned". Regardless of government, privacy is important and not something to just talk down. Also also, discord doesn't delete anything apart from any potentially existing CC information, etc. Every message ever sent in every server/DM still exists and is being stored on discord. (the account still exists, the data still exists, the account has just been renamed and your login details have been deleted. "deleted_user_asgshry46778#3677") They don't try to delete the messages and replace them with a subtle message about the user deleted their account so this message was deleted. Nothing. I shouldn't expect anything less from them tbh, they can't even implement a normal/working block feature that (last time I checked when BD wasn't made an enemy) they can do just fine and perfectly.

A reminder that Jason Citron, the CEO and Co-Founder of Discord Inc, founded OpenFeint back in 2009. If you don't remember what OpenFeint was, it was a basically a social network for mobile games before Discord. Citron sold the the product to GREE in 2011, and in the same year it had a class action lawsuit brought against it for breach of contract, fraud, and privacy violation. OpenFeint shut down in 2012. Citron had essentially sold out all of OpenFeint's users data when he closed the deal with GREE. Now is this to say that Discord is in a similar situation? Probably not, in my opinion. At the same time, I personally don't trust it, and have used Matrix/Element for years now, only occasionally using Discord if it's necessary to get in contact with someone (which isn't the case for me 99% of the time).

The issue with worrying about companies using your data in the first place is literally every single company does it. The only way to avoid it is to 1.) Use a VPN (there's some comments and my reply about this already, scroll down), spend days of your life reading every privacy policy of every site, and block yourself from 99% of the internet or 2.) Don't use the internet. Obviously making sure the website you use is safe is good, but worrying about their privacy just isn't worth it to me. The longer you think about it, the more you realize that everyone who uses the internet has had their privacy compromised, which to me, makes it less of an issue than people make it out to be. I never hear stories about people's lives being ruined or something through a company logging your messages. To me it's just not worth worrying about anymore because it affects everyone anyways.

Just a quick tip: When you use a big platform or something on Internet, you will always have data stored and maybe used. No matter if it's discord, google, youtube, twitter, facebook, or even game clients. You always agree to those things using your datas in X or Y way. A.I. is taking a certain turn to be honest, I know some people are against those and some people are for those, but here it's just opinions, we'll never all agree to that, and there's not a "correct" answer to that question. Discord always collected data, but, I might need confirmation as if it's still the case or not, but I'm pretty sure that whenever you delete a message, they have to delete it from their databases as well to respect basic privacy. Which is why reporting someone on Discord is a struggle sometimes. Do not hesitate to correct me if I'm wrong on some of my points, but please do so with proof or something. Wishing you all a fantastic day.

There is a clear difference between storing certain information and actively browsing and accessing it. Discord probably had in mind that they can no longer simply not store information while providing a service that actively does, but at the same time they simply removed the text indicated what they do with the information in context without granting any coherent explanation as to why and now the userbase is going monkebrain over it. But it would be messed up if Discord actually starts to access information regarding audio/video calls and livestreams.

Hey. It's probably dumb, but I made a private server on Discord to save up my passwords, emails and everything. Is there *any* risk about that? you shouldn't be storing any passwords anywhere in plain text on an internet connected device, let alone a chat service. there are plenty of password managers that are perfectly safe to use instead. please do yourself a favor and wipe your private server immediately, and if you are super paranoid or cautious, change all affected passwords.

Let me just say that the CCP does not have jurisdiction over Discord, so a law enforcement request by China to Discord is not possible, since Discord is a privately owned company located in The United States of America. Furthermore, Tencent does not have a controlling amount of shares and will only be able to have influence on decision-making. They will NOT be able to access Discord company data, and hence will not be able to see your screens, audio recordings and messages.

I'll be honest, I got here, more than a year later, because I noticed that my youtube algorithm seems to have gotten information from my discord text PMs to inform my recommended videos. At this point I'm used to my phone that I need to survive in modern society to spy on me, but a discord text PM being scraped was new. I'm wondering if in this case it's not even Discord Inc being aware of it but something to do with it utilizing the google cloud infrastructure. My issue is not related to the one you presented, but I figured I'd drop a comment on it in case anyone is interested or also noticed and got here.

The whole "oh no oh my god they're going to store all info about me" thing is just so stupid because like... A lot of laws have laws for that? Like yes, they will be allowed to store temporary data, and they *need* to store message data and whatnot for you to look back at old messages.. Something none of these people have moaned about before? But per law (at least that of some countries/unions) No company is allowed to store personal user data for more than X amount of days if it is inaccessible to the user. So for example, with messages, they can be saved forever essentially because you have the very easy option to go and delete the message at any time. Considering that its discord, voice messages in the future will also be easy to go back to and delete. Now streams could be different. If discord doesnt add a specific setting or something where you can access and delete your streams, they would be forced into deleting it in a certain timeframe or else itd go against the EU laws about handling and storing personal information (which, a video/voice call featuring your voice or face would be), which theyd have to comply with as theyre operating in EU countries, and going against said law would result in a damning lawsuit. A website or app that has users and therefore requires a database will ALWAYS store information about you. If you have an account on anything, theres information about you being stored. But obviously, there are laws dictating how long certain things can be stored, especially information that you cannot edit/delete. Specifically for that, they'd have to either have you re-confirm that youre okay with that data being stored every few months, or they will have to delete it. Of course, yes, not everyone will adhere to those rules like Meta because too many old people like facebook to take down their company.. But Id be truly surprised if discord had that kind of privilege. If they break data security laws, they will get fucked. There isn't really much of a reason to panic about this. If anything, you should panic more about having an Amazon account or some other online store account lol.

People are outraged and are acting like this is the first time this has happened. There are many documented cases where Discord messages have been provided to law enforcement upon request. Discord doesn't even fight these. They get a subpoena, they comply with the subpoena. Your message history is laid bare as requested. This has also been the case for MANY DMCA filings as well. One that people may not know is that Discord provided the entire server logs, from start to finish, for two private servers for Black Desert Online to Kakao, the publisher of the game. They were hunting for all information regarding prominent figures in those communities, from staff to developers. Other behind-the-scenes things are the servers being used by cheat developers for video games. They think they're private, but anti-cheat developers, and the game developer/publishers have had direct channels to these servers for years and no one suspects a thing. Your privacy was never safe with Discord from the start, but people are only worried about it now because they misinterpreted the ToS changes. This is not new, and has been a thing for years.

Yes its listening. Friend and I were discussing workouts we like. We werent streaming either. Never looked anything up in browser or videos. I dont research workouts or eating healthy cause I know what work for me. Later that day I opened up netflix and plastered across it was workout videos. Never knew netflix even had workout videos, cause I only look up scifi and suspense stuff. That alone was enough to shoot off big red flags. I honestly dont care, since i use it to play games with buddies but it would be nice to know. Though in reality at this point with the amount of tech we use on a daily, most things are tracking, listening, watching.
