It's called "cheating for the audience." It's a technique of live theatre. -- And it's why all those YT videos where an editor silences the audience to "make the characters look insane" are pretty much unfair bullshit. The conceit in the performance is that the audience isn't in the room, of course! But irl they are, and the actor has to account for their responses.

I went to a Howie Mandel show once with my mom. Her phone rang and Howie was on us, I stood up to apologize as my mom declined the call which was my dad wondering when we’d be home. The crowd began to chant “call him back” so Howie agreed. I brought him the phone and hit call and he let my dad have it cussed him out up and sideways, my dad was amused lol

I think the fact that they added in the fact that it was a black crowd needs a little of explanation. The reason they added that fact is that it's VERY VERY hard to win over a predominantly african american crowd as a white comedian. I for one am a amateur Caucasian stand up comedian and live in a mostly african american area. I started when I was sixteen, the first thing the general manager of the comedy club said was "You are one of the only white guys to try to come here, these black crowds are a little more hard to win over, so just be yourself, and do your regular shit, take note of what they react to and like, they are good practice for whenever you get a stale crowd." Best advice ever. ((Not to say predominantly African American crowds have a stale sense if humor. Sometimes you can just get a bad crowd. Other times we will sometimes get tripped up instead of just going for it. Especially starting out. He was just telling me not to overthink it in general.))
