My god i had to search for a while to finally find this song again. Im so glad i finally remembered the lyric "if love is a drug i guess we are all sober" and finally found this mid-2000 Gem. In a time when music was great yet serious. The latter is something the 90's lacked, but the former is what the 2010's lacked.

God I loved this song and video. It was one of my "anthems" for a year. You guys remember how it echoed the global sentiment at the time of the "War On Terror" and no-one wanted Bush to "Bring Democracy to the Middle East"? We're all still reeling from the decisions to this day. Fantastic song, and a witty commentary on the state of things. Love you Nerina!

Awesome song, my favorite part: "I'f God's on our side, then God is a joker Asleep on the job, his children fall over Running out through the door and straight to the sky I don't want to die For every man who wants to rule the world There'll be a man who just wants to be free What do we learn but what should not be learned? I've got a friend, he's a pure-bred killing machine He said he's waited his whole damn life for this I knew him well when he was seventeen Now he's a man he'll be dead by Christmas And so, everybody's gone to war But we don't know what we're fighting for Don't tell me it's a worthy cause No cause could be so worthy If love is a drug, I guess we're all sober If hope is a song, I guess it's all over How to have faith, when faith is a crime? I don't want to die If God's on our side, then God is a joker Asleep on the job, his children fall over Running out through the door and straight to the sky I don't want to die For every man who wants to rule the world There'll be a man who just wants to be free What do we learn but what should not be learnt? Too late to find a cure for this disease And so everybody's gone to war But we don't know what we're fighting for Don't tell me it's a worthy cause No cause could be so worthy If love is a drug, I guess we're all sober If hope is a song, I guess it's all over How to have faith, when faith is a crime? I listened to this song obsessively when my best friend got sent to Iraq. He came back alive and whole but I've never forgotten the terror I felt when his mother once called me to say there had been an attack near where was working. Neither of us knew shit about what was happening. But we were both locked in horror till it turned out it was some other mothers on and someone else's best friend who had died. Looking back we were really silly to worry because now that part of the world is super stable..

I was never quite sure if it was supposed to be a food fight and that the food fight is as pointless as war, or if it was supposed to be that these normal shoppers would genuinely brutally slay each other in combat. I always thought the latter was more poetic, but that the former was probably the case as (by the end) they're all grinning with the milk grenades and fizzy drink cannons.

why do these lyrics relate to me in large part to the Iraq war 2007, also to when these song released around late 2006/2007 . I dont think many UK troops like my uncle from the RAF ground forces , and who lost 2 friends there, actually went out to Iraq war in 2007 knew " what they were fighting for , and i guess its a worthy cause" ?
@gravityhypernova5 жыл бұрын
I found this online: "London born and Jersey reared singer-songwriter Nerina Pallot composed this song on bass guitar during the week Britain entered the Iraq War in 2003. Rather than a straight protest song, it is more a reflection of Pallot's personal anxieties over friends she had grown up with joining the military. She recalled to The Daily Telegraph April 4, 2010: "There were friends who I'd always kicked a ball with and smoked joints with and I thought 'My God are they really going to do this? Are they really going to get into a tank and do this?' You look at the news and I was transfixed with fear. That song worked for me because I could see a face, I was picturing him putting on the gear and going. It was about my friend and what's going to happen to all of us."
