I'm really interested in your progress. Several years ago I went keto to loose weight and improve my health. When I started doing triathlon training a few years ago (after long break from endurance sports) I was hesitant to start eating carbs again and tried to keep to my low carb diet. It didn't work and now I eat loads of sugar. 😀. I'd like to see how you manage to keep fueling your traning with carbs and still improve your insulin resistance.

Great video Jesse. It's easy to fall into this kind of routine when you have financial constraints. Lachlan mentioned a few times he was eating those things because they were cheap. From my experience here in the UK (so maybe different is AUS); Frozen fruit & vegetables and canned tomatoes/beans/lentils etc (low salt) are really good cheap options that kind be thrown into lots of meals and you can store in the house in bulk.

What got him was the massive consumption of vegetable oil. In the 1.5l of soy milk, in the bread, the margarine. This type of fat is incorporated into the cell walls where it readily oxidises (saturated fats do not) and damages the cells' insulin receptors, leading to T2 diabetes. This is further exacerbated by frequent snacking which keeps insulin levels elevated. Great lesson on what not to eat.

120g of fat a day is enough to trigger T2D in most people. A simple oral glucose tolerance test will prove this. I remember back in 2000 I was smashing out the miles and smashing the fats. My doctor said I was pre diabetic. I was just so hungry and under eating on carbs which leads to over consumption of fats. Fats block the insulin receptor site which forces the body to produce more insulin. Id be 150kg if I didnt change my diet to low fat soon after as burn out hard in 2000 and lucky I learned the important of low fat eating early 2001.

Some good changes Jesse. Whole fruit always better than juice,you get it fresh with fibre without the blood sugar spike. Too much processed food in Lachlans diet,not enough fibre,whole foods. I would bulk up on the veg and fruit. No mention of hydration,how much water is he drinking?
@durianriders Жыл бұрын
Blood sugar spikes are not an issue. You haven’t ever worn a CGM have you? Oral glucose tolerance test scores are what matters MOST and second to that is fasting insulin. I’ve worked with diabetics since 1999. I ALWAYS get better results for them than anyone else they work with.

Not enough fibre? He had 55g on that day. The recommendation is 35-50g a day. "Bulk up" on fruit and veg, and what else, let me guess, replace refined carbs with whole grains and oats? Legumes,broccoli,spinach,celery,carrots,capsicum. Eat the rainbow for colours. Whole grains like quinoa etc.The bloating or gas some experience will reduce as your microbiome is fully stocked and you become use to it. Hi Jesse I thought getting diabetes from a high carb diet is nearly impossible as a cyclist. It seems like it is possible, what do you think about that?
@nerocoaching Жыл бұрын
Yes his diet was high in carbohydrate, but also high in fat as I pointed out, and generally lacking in every measure of a healthy diet, macronutrient composition aside, which is a big issue. I don't know anyone who recommends a generally high carbohydrate diet for endurance performance (like I do) who recommends eating like he did. There's a lot of factors that would have contributed to him becoming pre-diabetic, including the multitude of issues with his diet + his genetics + likely overtraining status + timing of food + lack of blood monitoring + general life stress + sleep + many many other things.

I think the real question is what is your opinion on his new diet? It is now vastly different to what he previously consumed. He’s mentioned that he feels great training…..
@lorenzfrass9499 Жыл бұрын
He will feel great in training for a while and then he will probably burn out… Its always the same with carb restriction. It works until it doesn‘t. Damn the dude is eating almost 200g of fat per day and probably overextending himself in training judging by how tense he looks and he‘s like you know what actually it‘s the damn carbs. Like fo sho eat more fruit instead of refined carbs but cut the fat and not the carbs… Dude prolly watched too much Robert Lustig content and got a bit confused. Curious to see how this turns out for him I wish him all the best but I don‘t see that this ends well to be honest.
@nerocoaching Жыл бұрын
His new diet is obviously more nutritious which is good. He said he feels great training which is also good, but let's wait long term, people will say they feel amazing when they make any dietary change. Chronically low carbohydrate diets are not recommended for endurance athletes, especially ones doing moderate and high intensity training. There is also some mis-information in his newer videos, along the lines of "my diet was high in carbohydrate, which gave me diabetes", that is not evidence based. His unhealthy diet and very likely some genetic factors contributed to his pre-diabetes. FWIW I've eaten a (mostly) healthy, high carbohydrate diet for the last 15+ years, HBA1c on my last blood test was 5.2%. If in doubt, get a blood test. And eat healthy food...
@adambuttenshaw Жыл бұрын
@@nerocoaching appreciate the response. Recently I had a body scan completed which revealed that I had significantly higher body fat percentage and visceral fat that I envisaged. I also had a very high cholesterol score at 6.8. Coming from a super high carb diet with minimal fat and a fair amount of cycling (10 hours per week) it seemed very curious. After seeing a dietician - they recommended a similar diet to what Lachie is eating now. Low carb everything with a significant protein increase. I also wore a CGM for two weeks to help guide diet and blood sugar spikes. My HRV has improved dramatically, sleep quality has also significantly improved but after about a month I am not feeling super awesome on the bike and I think it may be due to the reasons you outlined. I will probably introduce carbs back in smaller quantities and focus on eating more veggies.

@@nerocoaching I saw an accredited practicing dietician. I gave my full history on cycling, both hours on the bike and calories burnt from a power meter (around 7k of calories from exercise per week). The advice was to replace most of what I was eating with lo carb options - ie. low carb/high protein bread and focus on healthy carbs like some pumpkin, corn, carrot and potato. I’ve significantly decreased the amount of carbs that I eat on a daily basis which has resulted in some data oriented improvements that I mentioned earlier which I’ve found very surprising.

T1 diabetic here. Basically his diet was shocking and that of a college students. Everything he ate was highly processed. Was pretty disappointed in his video talking about diabetes as he didn’t label it as T2 which there is a MASSIVE difference of the 2 types. I’m a cyclist and carbs are fuel and I load up on carbs except when I’m not training. Then I’m more concerned if what’s going in my mouth. I have a hba1c of 5.8. Fat you eat is fat you wear and will also make you more insulin resistant.
@inz_uzi Жыл бұрын
That's a ridiculous statement. Body fat doesn't cause insuline resistance. Body fat and insuline resistance are two effects of one common cause - high carb diet. High carb diet increases insuline which prevents the body from burning fat. You get fatter and more insuline resistant and in the end you develop the type two diabetes when your pancreas just can't produce more insulin and gives up. I recommend dr ken berry channel if you are interested.

Raisin toast also has roughly 6g protein per 2 slices. Just from that we're at 28g protein in the first 2 meals (as a lower bound estimate), the video says 7g?? Great Video! What I'd be interested in... What's the effect of "clean" nutrition really? Everybody always says nutrition is key but is it? I know controversial but I've never seen studies regarding performance with keeping health in mind. I mean obviously non-active people gonna gain weight eating unhealthy but highly active athletes? Does it matter for them as well as long as they don't overeat?
@nerocoaching Жыл бұрын
It's not really about being "clean". For someone like Lachlan needing to eat 5000+ kcal on this day, it's not possible to do that with only foods that someone would consider "clean". But if you take him eating 5000kcal from bread, cornflakes and soy milk VS keeping those foods for fuel but including a range of other nutritious foods amongst it, there is 100% a difference. And by nutritious, I mean foods like fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, wholegrains, animal and plant-based proteins, etc. Why? More varity of micronutrients, pre and pro biotics, amino acids, fatty acids, phytonutients, etc. There's countless research on how/why these foods are healthy, I don't even know where to start. It's not a myth that an athlete consuming fruits and vegetables will have better recovery, blood values, sleep quality, etc than an athlete who doesn't, I'm not sure what to say... There's a few people commenting this. Nutritious food isn't a myth haha

I've just watched Lachlans follow on video, and although he's starting to throw in some more nutritious foods, it still looks very high fat. Reading Dr Neal Barnards book about type 2 diabetes an exessive amount of of fat in the diet can lead to insulin resistance. You picked up that he was eating >100g oil!! per day and his 'new' diet doesn't look that much better in that regard. Barnard recommends less than 30g. Lowering the carbs treats the symptoms but doesn't necesarily get to the root cause. I do pretty much subscribe to Durianriders words of wisdom ha ha!

If this is a problem can it be solved by upping plant protein intake from the recommended daily target 1g/kg bw to say 1.5g/kg bw to compensate for the poor “bioavailability”. 🤷♂️
@DurianriderCyclingTips Жыл бұрын
How heavy are you trying to get? More protein = more weight. Eat as much protein as you can stomach if the goal is more weight on the scales. That is why steroids users focus on protein intake so much as anabolics increase protein synthesis.

@@DurianriderCyclingTips well if we use your logic - steroid using body builders cut out carbs and fat to get get shredded for a show while keeping protein intake high… so carbs and fats must be making us fat right? Since he achieved most nutrient targets, the main concern is not about nutrients but the huuuge quantity of industrial additives he pushed into the body. Those are hormonal and cellular disruptors even in "regular" doses, not to mention the quantities he consumed. I don't know which type of diabetes he has and, regardless of that, I cannot judge him. 20 years ago I also did a big fuck-up with my liver. Not knowing about basal metabolic rate, I accidentally doubled my caloric intake, mostly with high GI carbs. This brought me to the ER, one night. Took me some years to recover from that. I highly agree with your advices on how to optimize those meals. Quality content, as usual.

I think a mi goreng asks for at least one egg on top - just like the packaging suggests.

He eats what I would feed my worst enemy. OMG. Only simple carbs, no healty fats, protein and nutrition. You dont live long on energy alone. Im happy to hear that he turned it around. Low carb is a great option, as long as you carb up slightly when racing.

Refined wheat flour is 70% starch which is a complex carb, so that bread isn't "only simple carbs". Margarines and other spreads these days don't contain hydrogenated fats either. And 200g proteins is "no protein"? He also ate 55g of fiber and pretty much all micronutrients were within or over the recommended dose. Have you watched the same video?

Genuinely don’t understand how this diet is bad if it hits every micro and macronutrient requirement. What is it about vegetables that makes them actually better than cereal and toast

There is also glycemic index to consider. Eating a lot of foods with high GI (unbalanced meals, processed foods) can easily lead to diabetes, especially when they are consumed outside of training duration/pre-training meal.

Ugh, low carb Ugh, fasted enfurance What a crap diet before, nutritional value zero. T1 diabetes sux, but eating wholefood carbs, with fiber improves insuline issues.
