First Flight Ever! Private Pilot Lesson One!

14:10 first landing (Auburn s50)
28:00 second landing (Norman Grier s36)
41:00 last landing back at KPLU.
Long video but it’s pretty much the whole first flight lesson from start to finish.
Lesson 1 Private Pilot! The student flew well, but this is a normal first flight for my students. I don’t always add the second airport landing if they are struggling ,but he was doing great and was still seeing outside (learning ).
So we started out heading for KTIW (Tacoma Narrows airport ) but things got busy over there so I diverted to S50 ( auburn airport ) for a landing and then we took off and headed over to S36 ( Norman Grier airpark , formally known as Crest) for another landing. Crest is fun since its an airpark with private homes lining the runway on both sides.

Brings back memories and I will never forget my solo flight. Instructor said to take him to the terminal he needed to use the bathroom. He got out and said, now, do what you do best and give me three takeoff with full stop. I went numb all over but my brain/training knew what to do. Well I took off, but instead of three takeoff and full stops, I did three touch and goes. Came back and Al Sevi the instructor said great job with the touch and goes. Then it hit me... Full stops. He laughed and shook my hand and said take me back to where we started. That is where it started.

Good job doing touch and goes for first solo! I always have a radio handy when soloing students. I have forgotten my radio a couple of times and those are the only times I actually wanted it. I had a student taking orders from the tower and they kept clearing him to land so he just kept flying lol did like seven before he was able to ask for a full stop. I was jumping up and down and waving at the tower to bring him in but they either didn’t see me or thought it was funny.

Some students get lucky and have good landings early on. I then get to show them all the bad landings and see if they can fix them. It’s like inventing a light bulb if Edison had done it on the first try he would have missed out on all the knowledge of failure. I prefer the student struggles a bit with landings and really learns how to fix them. This student just didn’t over control and it helped him initially with landings.

Doing the ground first is how I learned and I think it’s the best way, so don’t worry too much! You might ask about doing a couple lessons though .... it can make things your reading make more sense and you don’t need medical to fly around with an instructor your just a passenger :) It can also keep you motivated! Goodluck! FAA medical is a pain but mostly it’s waiting for them to reply.

Awesome ! Good luck ! Just use the ACS and PTS as a weapon. When your done teaching a section pull put the acs and make sure you taught all the required areas. “With and without an MEL” Make sure you go over MEL don’t skip it because your plane doesn’t have one and pretty much no private pilot needs to know it except on test day. Both the weight and balance Envelope charts in the Cessna 172 manual...be able to teach the difference and how to use both.

Good luck ! It’s gets less confusing amazingly quick. It’s easiest to “just do it”. You can download the Airplane Flying Handbook from the FAA for free and it’s good reading for all pilots and will get you way ahead on your first lesson. You might look for an intro flight at your local airport, $99 deal is pretty common and since your younger you might find a mentor or flight instructor that would let you fly back seat a bit. I always try to err on the side of too much. I don’t like to underestimate what my student can handle so I just keep piling it on until I see signs they are done learning for the lesson.

NERO AVIATION So what you are saying is, maybe that much instruction was a waste of the students flight money if he didn’t absorb much of the details, while it showed a variety which was good, but maybe too early in instruction. Taking a first flight to a narrow runway was a waste, maybe better after he soloed and teach more advanced style airports at that point. Just a thought to put that in with a more experienced student or rusty pilot review. There are so many videos to watch prior to taking a first flight, and doing it with the student with your commentary, that would increase value and make the lessons easier for the student and the instructor, and as an instructor remembering the word ‘primacy’; also the steps of instruction: instructor tells/instructor does, instructor tells/student does...😎

Lol, I just let the student decide how much they want to do. As long as they are looking around and noticing things outside the plane and asking questions it’s all good. I also help out when needed and most of the help is pretty minimal so they walk away thinking dang that was fun! It also helps build confidence going forward since the first lesson is intense the second one is a cake walk! My first instructor was hands off and I remember thinking “This guy is nuts letting me do everything on the first flight”! He wasn’t chatty either he just let you go until it started falling apart... I don’t do that lol.

29:30 The “little bit of lift” he was asking about being ground effect was not... it was just a bit of a bump and we talked about it later. Ground effect will usually feel like a cushion of air and will push you away from the ground smoothly. We hit a bit of turbulence near the ground (felt like a speed bump) It could have been wake turbulence from the last plane to land or wind blowing through a gap in the buildings or trees lining the runway.

I’ve watched a first lesson from 10 months ago (in a 172) and was shocked that the instructor was: 1. not making radio calls in the pattern, 2. teaching the student to slow to 70 knots before turning base (instead of 80 knots), 3. making turns to base and final at a low airspeed and commenting that in a crosswind the base to the final turn would be a little steeper which invites a spin if the student does anything else wrong (like maybe a little uncoordinated and pulls back on the yoke), 4. adding full flaps below 500 feet on final ( as in no configuration changes below 500 feet), not recommending a wider pattern with a little crosswind (which makes it easier for a student pilot to not overshoot base to final, i.e., turning a little early and let the crosswind push the aircraft toward the final course), 5. No radio call on taking the runway for departure (no comment like final clear/runway clear), and no radio call on clearing the runway (I wouldn’t expect the student to make the few first radio calls, but it wasn’t apparent that there was a cut when they were made, so his whole lesson was a bad example). My impression is the video should be pulled or redone. Some of the other instruction was good, but overall it is not acceptable able as a good example of instruction for viewers. Yes, I am an instructor. 😕

One thing to note that your instructor got..not wrong but probably wasn't the best practice is that instead of turning off carb heat after you land, you should turn your carb heat off when you introduce your last notch of flaps on final so FULL power is available to you in case of a go-around. If your carb heat is in and you forget, you won't have full power available for a go-around.

Yeah I don’t teach carb heat on final in a Cessna 172 simply because of the manual, and the Cessna is super ergonomic. Dehaviland beaver turn final carb heat is off. It’s a lever down near your leg and is not ergonomic on a go around.

I was curious as to why the student constantly held onto the throttle. Was he instructed to do so or was that overkill? I take it back, he seems to be mostly holding on when he is maneuvering for takeoffs, climbs, approaches and landings. However still curious if it was a little more than necessary.

I teach holding the throttle pretty much call the time. It protects it from the examiner / instructor. Makes for quick reaction and no grabbing the mixture on accident. If I’m maneuvering I usually have my hand on the throttle. Hopefully your almost a private pilot!

This can't be lesson one in the actual aircraft unless you have already spent a good bit of time with the student in a simulator. Lesson one should not have any landings in it until finished. Lesson one should be up at altitude showing primary controls and secondary controls. You should practice flying a fake patter up at altitude so they know what to expect once you come back to land. Helping them to understand the controls and how pitch and power are related is the first thing that should be taught. Showing them how to properly trim the aircraft and fly with just three fingers. Landings can come easy once a student knows how to set the power and work the controls. It appears this student has already had some training.

I will say a good tool for keeping the students eyes outside is to cover up the instruments. We used to bring sticky notes for our students. Now I'm teaching g1000 and I may just bring a piece of paper.

Do you ever have to worry about wake turbulence flying under the approach for Sea-Tac?

Wake turbulence usually dissipates by the time it gets down to the underlying airspace. Basically think of it as boat wake it works sort of the same way. If a large aircraft passes in front of your line of travel and maybe a little higher “watch out!”. Other than one time I have never hit any wake in the Seattle area. The wake I did hit was actually a C-17 flying into Mchord Air Force base and it crossed my path about 500 ft above my altitude and I couldn’t climb higher due to airspace. I slowed way down ( under Va)...it still hit hard! I hit it at 2000ft and wouldn’t want to hit it lower in case of a stall. I would always slow to below Va if wake turbulence is suspected. Also tighten your seatbelt if you fly with it loose. A better answer might have been to change course and give it some extra time to disperse.

Weird I was always taught that you use the trim second pitch using ur flight controls and than set an approriate trim to make the aircraft stay at that angle. Could be diffrent tho would love to hear your thoughts.

The way your describing sounds about how I teach it. “Set the plane where you want it and trim off the pressure “ Anytime your holding more than finger pressure and your not in a transition ... trim off the pressure. Only thing I teach that’s a bit weird is that the transition is not a time to trim. Reduce power , add flaps , pitch down for 80 or 90 and you don’t need trim “yet “... let it transition to the new speed and drag setting and you may not need trim.

Quick question: why do you instruct to keep power in until after landing? I was always taught to pull power to idle over the threshold and just manage your energy for a smooth touchdown. Also I was taught that a soft field was to keep power in until touchdown like that, so how does soft field technique change from normal landings? I hold a PPL, but I am nowhere near the experience level I would like to be. Just looking for different landing philosophies to become a better pilot. Love the content btw, helps not only students, but people like me too!

Leaving power in can give you more control during the landing phase. Power is just a tool, if we are high we take it all the way out. I don’t like teaching to yank power out automatically. I want students to use and think about how much power they want for landing. You said it yourself we use power for “soft landings” so someplace between soft field landings and normal is a perfect landing. Try 1100 rpms on your next landing and see if you like it. As you progress to larger aircraft you’ll find that a little power really helps on landing. Especially on a 182 with a heavy engine out front. The elevator won’t have enough authority to keep the nose wheel off the ground on landing without power. The way you were taught works fine and is an industry standard... I would encourage you to try with power though and see what you think. I want to a land the plane not just have it land. Thanks for watching and for the awesome comment !

The soft field landing is power out once obstacle is cleared and then power back in to make the landing soft and to keep the nose wheel out of the grass during the landing. Using power on landing is just a small part of the soft field technique. Hope that makes sense. Thanks for the great question !

It totally is but if they can handle it i keep shoveling it on. Student might get 10% but they also get to watch the video over and over so works out well. Explain trim like this: "if you're applying forward pressure, roll it FORWARD" (taking hold of middle of trim wheel and flinging it up/forward) "If you feel back pressure, roll it BACK" (taking hold of the top of trim wheel and pulling back/down)

Basically if your pushing the yoke forward you need to roll the trim wheel up which will drop the nose. If your pulling back on the yoke roll it down. If your reading the labels on the trim wheel it gets confusing in my opinion. Basically for trim hold the yoke where you want to keep the pitch attitude and trim off the pressure. If your changing power or adding flaps or turning keep in mind that the plane needs to settle into the new configuration before you should trim unless it’s a lot of pressure your fighting. The trim setting for straight and level flight is pretty much the same as 1500 rpm with flaps and descending ( most pilots never learn that since they have already trimmed a couple of times uselessly chasing the plane).

Hey I have a question about the audio what are you using to capture the audio so clear. Are you taking input from the headset and how does it work? Can you link the parts to buy?

I use a mic lavaliere mic ( lapel mic) inside the ear-cup of my headset. Its the only way to pick up audio just as I hear it while flying.

The silver Sony mic $19 or so and the go pro audio adapter are needed to make work (easy way ). Other way you can do it is to record audio with your phone and then sync it in editing ( it’s a pain ) but maybe free... if you have the iPhone headset you can just stuff the mic ( which is on the cord ) in your ear cup and record audio and edit later to video. If you want your 2yr degree CPTC is a good deal...otherwise I would suggest Spanaflight. What ever school you pick I would ask them which ground school they suggest. Some schools want you to use a particular ground school. CPTC has ground class during the week it’s a full time college course load. I personally find Kings to be a good one as you can download and use it offline on your iPad or phone. This channel is not affiliated with any flight school ... I work at CPTC but only part time.

Lol they always say yes... and then you have to confirm they are actually seeing it. It takes a bit to learn to see from the air compared to land navigation. I always make a point of having three items that prove I’m looking at the landmark I think I’m looking at.

I would totally suggest a few flights now just to see if you love flying. Don’t worry about studying too much for your first flight just be prepared to have fun! You can’t solo until your 16 so you have plenty of time before you really need to start studying hard. You might look into the Civil Air Patrol Cadet program it can get you some free flights and most of the members love aviation. Also “Running Start” programs are available at some colleges. We even have an aviation high school here in Seattle. Maybe you can find something in your local area and ask around at your local high schools for programs/grants! Flying is expensive but there are some amazing programs to get you flying if you look. If you want to study up a bit then the Airplane Flying Handbook is great! It’s free for download from the FAA. Normal flight lessons run about $180 per flight hour. I work at a college so total class hrs and tuition adds up quick. Its about the coolest thing you can learn while getting a degree though in my opinion! Maybe check your local airport and see about an intro lesson.... $99 -$120 is not uncommon to find. I did a $99 seaplane flight years ago was awesome !

As of now ...sadly no... I’m looking for an aircraft to lease / rent for students that don’t want to enroll at the college. So far it’s been an insurance issue with the local FBOs. We use the physical one out of the pattern. We are going over the checklist items though (flow checks). We do a before landing checklist when we are about 8-10 miles out and brief it. Also a normal takeoff Checklist is gone over before takeoff. Using it in the pattern is more of a distraction than helpful. Especially if all your doing is traffic pattern work. Always use the checklist just don’t always have it out when you do. I could use it more often than I do or teach ! Thanks for watching ! Great comment !

Yeah, I teach at Seaplane Scenics (Seattle area in a land plane ). I’ll teach seaplanes this summer as well. Private pilot is 15-20k in my experience. Figure 75hrs of flight is normal @ about $200 per hour depending on where you go. Lots of places will say 10k, but it’s rare someone gets it done for that.

Normal rental fee is $135 and hour for a 172 cessna. Guessing they are using a 162 or a 152 which is a little cheaper per hour but $100 is not bad at all. Make sure to ask how much the instructor fee is $40-$75 per hour is normal. Maybe try an intro flight.

Try getting a summer job at a flight school or FBO. Might get some free back seat time at least. Civil Air Patrol can get you some cheap /free flight time also.
