My thoughts too. To give them the benefit of the doubt, I assume that the students are all foreigners whose language and cultural familiarity with American teaching styles keep them on the quiet side. If it were me in that class, I'd probably be that annoying student who puts up their hand each time with all the answers.

@Alienfanatic2 жыл бұрын
Students aren't necessarily NOT paying attention; they're often intimidated in a group setting because they feel that making the wrong guess out loud will be embarrassing. The instructor's job is to make it OK to make a mistake and use that as a discussion point to help others understand that mistakes are OK. Encouraging active learning is key. I'm not a huge fan of lectures for this reason and prefer one-on-one conversations. Part 141 schools like this do larger "bulk" classroom work, which can work, but you have to follow up with these people to make sure they're taking up the information you're presenting. This guy is very enthusiastic and supportive, frequently using Q&A vs just a straight lecture, which I like a lot.

I was on my first solo flight as a student ..got to 5000ft and leaned my fuel per the way I was taught ." Keep leaning until you get a slight RPM drop, then go back a quarter turn". A few minutes later my engine started to fail..I could see the prop.. like both blades.. I gasped..my excellent training kicked in however and I pulled carb heat and pushed full throttle and simultaneously started looking for a place to put her down.. Just by chance there was an airport right below at 11 o'clock. I found the frequency radioed in My intentions , while doing a spiral decent (unnecessary)...and landed safely. Back then there weren't many cell phones so I parked and went in to call my instructor. . To shorten this up . He had me do a run up and report back all good.. cancel flight and fly the 30 minutes home along the beach. I did .all Good Conclusion? Mixture too lean.

Kind of a scary thought that some of these people attending this class end up flying an airplane on their own. Most of them clearly seem to have no clue about anything, and zero common sense. I thought i didn't know anything but a lot of this stuff is common sense and pretty easy to absorb. Kudos to the instructor, it must be hard to stand there and teach this stuff with a class that does not participate whatsoever, i'm hoping my instructor is gonna be similar to this guy, excited to start my ground training now.

It seems the students are ESL - English as a Second Language. (Edit: They're Russian, it turns out.) There's a certain lack of confidence in participating in discussions that comes with lacking confidence in your linguistic ability, even if you are technically proficient. A language barrier, no matter how small, can make anyone seem less intelligent or competent than they really are.

Right before my solo, the flight school assigned an instructor I had never met and who could barely speak English to conduct my oral exam. He refused to pass me because he kept insisting take off speed was 60 knots. He was wrong. According to the POH, take off speed was 60 mph. Three times I showed him in the manual where he was wrong and three times he insisted he was right. I finally went to the chief instructor and showed him the manual. Then I fired the flight school and demanded a full refund for that day’s lesson. I soloed a week later at my new flight school.

Why not use the blast fence? Does 5 10 knots make a difference when you have propellers blowing so much air capable of thrusting the plane into the air as well?
@tjlovesrachel3 жыл бұрын
The cowl intake is very close to the center of the prop…. The center of the prop has the least airflow
@FlyAirMarc2 жыл бұрын
Exactly, the main force of the propeller is in the outside of the blades, to give thrust to the airfoils to fly. The inside airflow of the prop is minimal to the engine, that's why it's not at all recommended running idle a long time on ground, and where wind intake, be it by airspeed in the air or a nice breeze blowing inside headfirst in the ground is essential for air cooled engines

Why would you turn the aircraft into the wind for a runup? The relative wind being produced by the prop is going to massively overpower any natural wind attempting to make its way into the engine bay. What if the wind is coming from directly behind you? This seems nitpicky and unimportant.
