It's a file and streaming server. It needs a bit more hardware and software, but even back then, there were a lot of companies providing anything from a tiny box like his to huge racks that can take multiple media streams, encode them and send it with whatever other files to 100+ computers with direct, encrypted connections. Aside from maybe providing tech support to local companies, his system has 0 things going for it.

Meaning, is it intended to design presentations, with the unique selling point being that it can work with a wide range of media types like videos, documents, etc? Doug seems to think that creativity begets good articulation but usually the opposite is true, creative minds quite commonly have scattered thoughts. It makes intuitive sense if you think about it; in order to be creative you need some sort of divergent thinking pattern, if your thoughts are scattered they are persistently divergent. That being said, unless this guy failed to properly describe the advantages of his product (which seems entirely plausible), it did sound rather unspectacular.

He could've outwitted the dragons by simply plugging the device and shown them how it works.

Well he should have done a demo. To come up a bag and place it on a table and leave at that then one thinks, "it is just a bag".

He should have shown them what it does instead of explaining it. And he should have stated the problem and how this is the solution.

Guy turned up with a bundled up desktop PC saying he can show different forms of media on it and that he's sold 5. I might turn up next year with my wristwatch and say I can get the time on it. I reckon I could sell 5, or perhaps half a dozen.

You can see this is very very old... Because saying "Writing a software is easy, anyone could do it, there is no added value in your product" is beyond wrong. So many apps today, only based on software, made millions and millions of money. They just didn't see it coming all these years ago. They thought that the only thing that was valuable in a computer was the hardware and didn't think the software behind would later become much more profitable. Sure, the pitcher made a terrible job at convincing them but still, they did not even tried to listen. They thought they knew everything better than him
