Intro drawing by Ashley Anderson: pressstarttobe...
After years of focusing on the best games for the NES, I decided to change gears and focus on lesser known cartridges that have, for one reason or another, generally escaped the public discussion and general nostalgia. This series highlights many of the relatively unknown, obscure, and unloved titles in the Nintendo Entertainment System's library. Some of these games are at best mediocre. Many are painfully bad, some of the worst NES games around. Most are hilarious for all the wrong reasons! Occasionally, OCCASIONALLY, a handful of them are actually good, borderline hidden gems.
While you won't find any of these on the NES Classic, some of these titles have managed to make their way onto the Nintendo Switch, so if you don't have an original Nintendo console or ROMs escape you ethically or technologically, there are several ways to play them.
Want more? Me too! Until then, lots of other articles where the pictures don't move and words have to be read can be found on my website: top100nesgames.com

This one feels like it was intended to be a Gameboy game with it's more simplistic color palette and graphics compared to the first. It also feels like different people worked on this one. The other team was probably working on Kickmaster which was probably the main focus.

Simpler compared to Real American but maybe not quite Game Boy level. And yeah that would be pretty funny if the A team was all on Kickmaster :)

I've played this and American Hero enough to have gotten to the cryptic and tedious parts. You describe them perfectly and it's simultaneously vindicating and triggering. Also, these power ups have that Kickmaster disease. By which I mean they constantly evade capture.
@anthonybernero9720

Do you even know what you mean when you say triggering?
@eelobrian6727
@eelobrian6727 Жыл бұрын
@anthonybernero9720 Hey Anthony! Thanks for your interest. In short, triggering envokes a vivid memory and/or feeling that is just as intense as the day it happened. It's a useful term that can apply to many situations, both serious or silly. In the case of my experience with the GI Joe game, it's the latter. Because I'm playfully referring to how it evoked memories of rage and frustration. However, in serious situations, a triggering event can cause genuine distress. Such as reliving severe emotional or physical trauma. Hope that helps. If you have any other questions, there are lots of resources available, but I wouldn't suggest asking KZbin commenters for answers, because between you and me, there are a lot trolls out there.

Ok totally appreciate this review: The original game has been one of my favourites since I was a kid. I didn't know there was a sequel until I got into emulation in my teens. Seemed like everyone liked it more than the first one so I was excited to try it out. And I did... about 4 or 5 times, even as recently as last year. But... I've never been able to get into it and I felt like there was something wrong with me. So I really appreciate that you were able to put into words all the things that made me uncomfortable playing it. Really digging the channel BTW, I love that you're discussing titles that aren't often talked about.

There is one big catch to that. There are 6 you can send to a stage (up to 3 at a time). If any die, and you have Spirit and a radio, you can revive them in that stage. If all 3 die, they're gone for good and you only have your (potentially) remaining 3. If the last die, you mercifully get to start all over (or try your luck at the password; but at least this time the password tracks upgrades).

Hey, thanks for this review! G.I.Joe Atlantis Factor was my first videogame EVER. I was 6 years old when I received in my smol hands my first Famicom. And it came with this cartridge. I played it for years. My child imagination ran so wild with this one! Difficulty was so rough and confusing sometimes (puzzles were so hard for me back then). I'm not sure it's "the best first game you can ever have" but I have to admit that I ended up loving this game not for what it was really meant for (to be a game for the animated TV series named GIJoe whose existance I ignored for years cause GIJoe series never arrived to latam I guess) but for all the sensations it generated in me and all the elementary-school conversations that it made me start back then with friends and all. Many years later, me being already a young adult and with assistance of emulators, I "beated" this game for the sake of it, but I would love to actually beat it the good way. I have to mention, English is not my native language, so that factor also added to my lack of understanding when I played GIJoe 2 as a child, haha. I need to do a remake of at least some stages of these GIJoe games (I'm a software developer)... It's a pending assignment for me. Wonderful review of yours, it turned out to too short for me! :) I really enjoyed it hearing your actual thoughts and oppinions about this game and not limiting yourself to only tell us how to beat it. Big hug from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Leo.

My fav team was s.shadow, roadblock, and duke. They were essentially my warrior, tank, and mage respectively. I used to spam s.shadws projectile by tapping crouch and attack repeatedly. When i found one of the power sources that the game mentions, id let duke get it and it fully upgraded his weapons. Since duke can aim upwards, he'd make short work of cobra commander

I had fun beating real American hero. I got rocked a good number of times until I figured the key to beating the game is powering up snake eyes weapons and life bar, fully as his projectile weapon does not use ammo. Once you do that its easy to get through the stages and power every one else up.

Yeah, not as good as the first but I still enjoy it. It does feel a bit rushed as you say, perhaps because even when the first game was out in 1991, GI Joe had decreased in popularity a great deal, so in 1992 it's really dying off so perhaps the devs had to just get it done and released. The Marvel Comic ended at end of 1994 but yeah, sales weren't great by that point. Also I'd forgotten how 'snowy' Ninja Force Storm Shadow looked. I like it though. :)

I bought a copy this game back in 1993 for $10 from Phar-Mor around the time when that chain of stores was involved in a scandal and I enjoyed it. I honestly thought Capcom developed this game but that wasn't the case it was fun nonetheless. I knew about the first GI JOE game on NES but I didn't really play that one for the first time until sometime last year and I loved that one too. I'll bet the original developer of these two games would've made a decent Transformers game for the NES far superior to the ones on the Famicom if they had the opportunity to do so.

It may not be the best action game in the catalog, but I don't know if I agree with most people saying that the original is superior (the boss fights are, that's for sure). And most saying that reusing assets like sprites, etc. Is cheap, I don't see anyone criticizing an action franchise with 6 titles that not only reuses the main char sprite, but also most mechanics, improving one or two things per title.

There was an Atari 2600 game, too. G.I. Joe, Cobra Attack. And they took the name literally because you had to fight a giant snake, rather than any of Cobra Commander's forces. Seems like it was made by someone who only had third hand knowledge of the franchise.

Oh yeah, Cobra Strike. Although at least they said it was a robotic giant cobra rather than a real live giant cobra. Although with Cobra Commander being mutated into an actual snake, by the snakey-hybrid Cobra-La people in the 1987 animated movie, a giant snake doesn't seem that wacky. At least in the cartoon continuity. Larry Hama, who did the toy bios and the Marvel Comic, never used them in the comic cos he thought they were too silly and preferred the more 'grounded' tone he'd already been having great success with. :P

i remeber playing the first Gi Joe American Hero. Walking home after school on fridays i'd rent games from the local grocery store. (they had a rental section) i played most nes and SNES games this way. I rent a game , then beat it over the weekend and return it on monday. Then rent another and another. It was a n awesome way to play tons of games on the cheap.. It was also like a demo trial too. If i like the game , id end up buying it. If not , no big deal , only out 2 bucks instead of 60. PLaying RPGs was a bitch though . the save was on the catridge that you returned. SO the chance of it being there the next time you rented it was nil. That was more of a trial to see if you wanted to buy it , like FFvi or 3 . Depending on your versions.

i really doubt no one played this game, it is awesome and was well talked about , anw, i do get the point, but it is indeed a G I JOE game and even i, a kid from a third world country had it as a kid. but i need to say, forget everything, THE MUSIC OF THE FIRST LEVEL, that is a banger, i keep humming it to myself all the time. This game along with so many other games, especially KICK MASTER are some of the most most gorgeous nes games, KID really knew how to make a stylish game. and yes, i love this much more than the first, by a country mile. easily in my top 10 nes games, along with KICKMASTER, SHATER HAND, SWORD MASTER and so many other good NES games that most people don't even mention .

@@Gatorade69 i still remember one day finishing my computer class in summer, stopped by the games store, found shatter hand, took it home, when i went inside my area, my little brother was at the window in the 7th floor , i held the game (kick master) up high to show him and he yelled '' HEY...KCIKMASTER'' ... the joy of being a kid in the 90s with a new game.

@@EpicLebaneseNerd Wish I had come across those games. Most of my games were used as I had a NES until much later so it was always a crapshoot if the game would be good or not. I did have Ninja Gaiden and it was given to me by the first girl I was ever infatuated with so that is a cool memory. I did have some great games in my collection though, too bad my stepdad got rid of them all when I moved out after highschool.

@@BigOleWords yes my friend, back then, it was only USA nes games available, so the same games sold in the USA were sold here, every single game u reviewed like KICK MASTER and these games, were exactly the same games with the boxes that we had, even ULTRA GAMES were avaibale here, AND NOT PALCOM , even on snes, we had the same censored TMNT TF game like everyone else, also explains why they were so expensive, i paid 110 dollars for it...imported. and btw, thank u for asking, ur a great guy.

I think what happened with you and what happens with a lot of people who play GI Joe 1 first is that you come into it's sequel Atlantis Factor trying rush through the game guns blazing when that was never it's intention. It's more of an exploration game this time around hence the password system and multi-route levels similar to Clash At Demonhead. You have the freedom to go anywhere but with certain Joes you rescue can get into places the others cannot to find hidden POWs and resources. That's the reason they made enemy pickups tricky to get as to discourage you from shortcut leveling up and to explore the game. The reason Snake Eyes starts with low health is because he's the best Joe in the game once he's powered up and the smart thing is to save those life upgrades to give to him. Also, I never power up everybody's Melee all the way and stop at Level 3 or enough for them to do flying kicks. With Shadow or Snake Eyes that's when I max out the Melee.

Body massage....It makes sense the games were developed by the same company, its weird how one is taxan and ones capcom though. Especially since the capcom one is inferior. I always liked the Joe, ShipWreck. He's the one liner snapping sailor very much akin to a Bruce Campbell. Great vids man and a good couple of games.

Cool. I _knew_ something was up with this one when I first tried it via emulator consoles and got pretty much instantly annoyed by the stupid bouncing power-ups. Glad to know I was not alone, lol! I love me some action-platformers, but I think I'll keep ignoring this one - besides, the music, multiple characters and map screen just remind me of Captain America and the Avengers for NES, and that game is definitely better, so whenever I look at this, I'll probably just end up playing GI Joe 1 or Captain America again. Btw, I know you love character switching in NES games - have you ever played Cocoron for the platform? I feel like it's probably a Japan-only game originally, but I've played it on emulator consoles where it's been appearing pretty regularly for well over a decade, so if it is Japan-only, it must've been fan-patched forever ago and just exists alongside NES games like no big deal. Anyhoo, it's a Mega Man-esque action-sidescroller type thing that not only features multiple playable characters, but MAKE your OWN characters out of head, torso and leg parts. I think you might find it pretty enjoyable.

Enjoyable game, but not nearly as good as the first one. I never got past the Cobra laboratory part because I couldn't figure out where to go or what to do. 5:38 - That's an Atari-level graphic effect. Graphics were still decent in this game, but I always thought they were a noticeable downgrade from the first one. 6:23 - They just recycled his sprite from the first one, even though he's obviously wearing an updated outfit in the cutscene.
