That puzzle with the safes is what we call a "Mastermind" puzzle (because there's a game called Mastermind--which can be bought as a stand-alone electronic but is often a default puzzle included with casual compilations or even used in adventure games--which works exactly the same way). The sliding tile puzzles are what we call "oh dear lord."

Little bit of trivia: this game was originally meant to be John Smith: Special Agent, then they made it a licensed title at the last moment! The prototype's available and it's pretty much exactly the same game with a different protagonist I'm actually a little familiar with this game, and the SNES game of the same name! That one, a youtuber I'm a fan of, made a video on over 10 years ago, reviewing + telling the story of how he discovered it: When he was a kid he had a SNES, but the N64 was already out and had 007 GoldenEye, then he found a bootleg SNES cartridge for 007 GoldenEye and bought it, but then he played it and it was actually James Bond Jr. in disguise! That game is awful, I actually have it in a bootleg multi-cart, it also calls it by the wrong name, but I knew what I was getting into because of him. Later I discovered this NES version in an emulator and was surprised by the quality, but I could never get past the first level because of and not knowing how to switch items, and the god-awful sliding puzzle with the syrens. I remember it played alright, sounded good, and looked great, so despite the mentioned issues here I might play it again!

@@BigOleWords The story goes that the license holder flat out refused to allow James to be married or have children in the show, feeling that would hurt his image and the brand as a whole for him to be tied down, he was a male fantasy figure. But that was how it was conceived and written, then painted over with the uncle brush at the last minute. I like it because it's the Hong Kong '97 trick done by people with a budget and the license. A damn shame you didn't go full in-depth with the rest of the item pick ups and power ups because i've stopped using the pistol once i got my hands on the Bombs which is what the game encourages you to use more often and the Shield is super good as you can tank through most of the annoying sections at the cost of not able to do anything i think ? And then there are the flares that'll stun everyone on screen while the big bomb just straight up nukes everything. I really wouldn't call this the "Worst NES Game" Like it has it's flaws but it really has a sincere charm and it sticks with its identity. Also i used to play this in a small tv that's also black and white and i still managed to pull of the puzzles from the first level and i am shocked how i managed to do it as a kid..
@BigOleWords9 ай бұрын

I've waited for this review for a long time as this was one of my first NES games and one of my favorites (along with Monsters In My Pocket and Mega Man 4), too bad you didn't like it. Even while all the shortcomings listed in the video are true the aesthetic and the atmosphere of the game is fantastic, it was the darkest and most "mature" game I played as a kid, much different from the Mario games on the same system (yeah, I know, I didn't play Metroid or Metal Gear as a kid), and that parallax scrolling in the jungle blew my young mind. I loved the whole soundtrack, from the rocking main theme (the game even has a hidden sound test!) to the terrifying game over theme, I couldn't get enough of this game and it took me a long time to beat it. Come on, the puzzles are not that hard! Well, maybe the one at 5:38, that one always gives me trouble even to this day, but even then I find the totem boss or whatever it is more troublesome than the puzzles. The first stage is my favorite and I'd say there are far worse ways to spend 30-45 minutes.

Hah! I remember mentioning this one long ago on one of your videos. I think this game looks and sounds awesome, but could do with (quite) some refinement. You can definitely see the hand of Commodore programmers with those puzzles and some obtuse choices...like how about a Megaman-style weapon selection instead of having to fumble through your items like that, and getting hit in the meantime? And how about the very first enemy you encounter needing like 30 shots for the kill... Some of the graphic details are awesome though. I love all the background items animating. The lights in level 3 are dope. Yeah the list of flaws is long, but it's still a secret pleasure of mine. Not so secret anymore I suppose.

After that you have water that act like electric field which lead with tedious, wacky and time consuming jumps to all the way to ceiling that you fall. Reminding that you are still don't know how to control in this game. And this suddenly lead to water section and puzzles with high pitch sounds. Yeah, something is not right here. The slider puzzles along with the constant siren is what breaks this game. The odd level design and annoying jump back can be dealt with if you practice the game enough. This game could have been great but instead feels cheap. Usually caused by the dev team not having enough time to iron things out. Same thing happened with Battletoads. This game has all the earmarks of an 80s British home computer game developer: the detailed graphics and animation, the use of big chunky "demoscene fonts", the musical style, even the janky gameplay... all came from the same culture that gave us Manic Miner, James Pond, and Impossible Mission. Scumlord/"Scunlord" was the leader of the criminal organization S.C.U.M., widely believed to be Ernst Stavro Blofeld himself though it doesn't look like him. A few Bond villains made it into James Bond Jr., including Dr. Julius No, who along with his fellow Chinese criminal mastermind the Mandarin from the Iron Man series was given a green-skinned makeover for his 90s incarnation. Presumably this was to avoid offending Asians, but I think that just makes the situation worse.

In conclusion, if you want a retro gaming experience set in the James Bond universe, just stick with GoldenEye on N64.

What about 007 The Duel for Sega Genesis? That's more retro than N64. The Duel is a good platformer/action adventure game.

so if this kid is nephew of James Bond how can he be called James Bond Jr? wouldn't his Dad have to be called James Bond SR which would be weird because that would mean he and his brother are both called James Bond.

@@BigOleWords i remember when my friend arrived with a suspicious goldeneye 007, but for super nintendo. our surprise was to discover that game was a james bond jr game. we were cheated! 🤣🤣

James Bond Jr is weirdbecause it implies that the character is 007's son, when he's actually his nephew. I guess 007 has a brother named James
