Intro drawing by Ashley Anderson: pressstarttobe...
After years of focusing on the best games for the NES, I decided to change gears and focus on lesser known cartridges that have, for one reason or another, generally escaped the public discussion and general nostalgia. This series highlights many of the relatively unknown, obscure, and unloved titles in the Nintendo Entertainment System's library. Some of these games are at best mediocre. Many are painfully bad, some of the worst NES games around. Most are hilarious for all the wrong reasons! Occasionally, OCCASIONALLY, a handful of them are actually good, borderline hidden gems.
While you won't find any of these on the NES Classic, some of these titles have managed to make their way onto the Nintendo Switch, so if you don't have an original Nintendo console or ROMs escape you ethically or technologically, there are several ways to play them.
Want more? Me too! Until then, lots of other articles where the pictures don't move and words have to be read can be found on my website: top100nesgames.com

@@BigOleWords haha, yeah, you have to let go of the button and hit it again, then keep holding it to get the speed back after the jump. It feels bad and is very awkward to keep momentum. Imagineering did it for nearly all their games, very weird design decision.

The two Swamp Thing movies from the 80's are actually pretty fun, if you enjoy B movies that pay homage to the 60's monster movies. I guarantee they will always be more entertaining than whatever attempts at a remake will be, because there's actually a sense of fun and adventure in the old ones. (and the special effects get way better in the second movie.)

I got this game as part of a crazy collection purchase. It was an NES with like 50+ games and 4 controllers and a four score. I paid a hundred bucks. Buddy really just wanted to get rid of it. This was maybe 15 years ago. Anyway, Swamp Thing was included as something that I hardly noticed until I started using the GamEye app and it told me that this game was $300. What?! Now I don't really know much of anything about Swamp Thing other than that it is a DC comic and an over priced game. And all the sound effects are the same as the Simpsons games. Maybe I'll give this one a go! You've now covered 5 games in this series that I own, but those titles still hold up as "Games I've Hardly Played At All Despite Them Sitting In My Collection For Many Years." Not as catchy a title, I know. Great content, as always, James!

I seen the Swamp Thing cartoon, and I liked it that they only made 5 episodes. It's like Ring Raiders all over again. I seen the show when It was originally turned it down to CBS, during its mid-season replacement debut on Fox as part of Fox Kids Network programming block in Halloween 1990, followed by 4 additional episodes airing weekly in early 1991, and airing in reruns in July to August 1991. I also watched the show airing in reruns on Chip and Pepper Foster's show, Chip and Pepper's Cartoon Madness on NBC, the one with the bulldogs. It was usually like Captain Caveman, Casper the Friendly Ghost, Heckle and Jeckle, Popeye the Sailor, but I recall Swamp Thing being on the show as well. It lasted 1 season from fall 1991 to summer 1992. After NBC cancelled all its cartoon slate, USA Network reran the show on the Saturday morning version of USA Cartoon Express later that year, and The Sci-Fi Channel would syndicate Swamp Thing years later. Last time I seen the cartoon when the U.K. The Children's Channel rebroadcast the show in the 1990's. The game’s followed approximately one year after the cancelled of the show.

Swamp Thing only got five episodes because that was sorta how Murakami Wolf Swenson and DIC would launch new series if they weren't pure commissions in the late 80s and early 90s. They would make 1-5 episodes. Then they would try to get marketing campaigns going. If those products did well, they would go to series. This game gives me late 80's Euro-platformer vibes- slippery controls, bad jumping and, of course, Swamp Thing's worst enemy: deadly water droplets! Also, the palette cycling of the fire looks like absolute ass. I've often wanted to check this game out, especially since I used to (occasionally) watch the USA Network Swamp Thing show as a kid. There are so many nes games that don't have a crouch or down attack. Looking you Metroid. It was always so frustrating to watch those little ankle biters shimmy up to me with no to do but jump over them. Some masochists would combine that with low ceilings and your just eating damage.

Makes me sad to play Swamp Thing since it has a lot of potential, shame it's not as good as Sunsoft Batman.😐 I'm not a big fan of overly large HUD status bars but the way this developer uses the full screen isn't very good. All that perspective projection doesn't make sense when you can't move like that(It's not Battletoads.) so the world just ends up looking big and messy while the character sprites seem very small in scale comparison. Let's just say they weren't level masters since that messy layout practice continued on SNES.😝 I'll defend the sprite art because it's actually pretty good for a semi-realistic aesthetic and the plants are actually well depicted which many NES games fail at. Seen worse but yeah the depth-contrast between foreground and background could be better, coupled with the weird perspectives just exacerbates that too.🤔 Somebody should be able to color hack those issues out but really the whole game needs a redux Ie. Swamp Thing: The Good Edition.😉

It was 5 days of pure hell where we said we realized how this thing could kill people and another 5 days of feeling shitty but not dead. I heard the one that goes around now isnt quite as hardcore as earlier versions. So I hope its just a shitty cold for you (my boss had it a couple months ago. He rated it "between a bad cold and a light flu". Sucks, but not deathly.) Take care.

if you mean Conan: The Mysteries of Time then yeah that's an odd game since it's basically an older 8-bit game called Myth: History in the Making (which was decent on the 8 bit home micros), poorly ported to NES and with Conan inserted as the player character.
