In Buari Fighter you can lock your direction. You must hold the fire button once you are facing the direction you want. I didn't think much of the game first impression, but it ramps up to become a great shooter with advanced speed and graphical enemy types with smooth animation and cool weapons that are impressive. Wish you could have seen more. Anyways, another great watch sir.

Burai Fighter is a hybrid. It also has vertical levels (well actually a lot of levels go horizontal and vertical) and top down levels where you move in an direction

I was going to suggest you play the ARCADE version of Section Z, because it's a totally different animal than the home version, ahead of it's time. I dropped many quarters into it at the Lehigh Valley Mall "Spaceport". But... ...watching playthroughs of it on youtube... oh my god. Oh my god, the difficulty of it all came back to me. I noticed the player was using cheat codes to not get killed every 5 seconds. It'd probably be a TERRIBLE game to showcase, despite being more awesome as it goes on. X D

I would strongly recommend you go back to Breakthru. That game is loads of fun. It's pretty short too. You can finish it in probably 20 minutes. Your car will jump huge distances if you get your speed up. It takes just a little practice but it pays off. Cheers.
