Not only was this my introduction to JRPG & RPG In general, but this game holds a special place in my heart for another reason I'd like to mention here. My father and I didn't have the best relationship when I was growing up. He had his issues and we didn't have much in common, nor did we do much of anything together. One day he came down the basement where I was playing this very game to tell me to come upstairs for dinner. I happened to be fighting the green dragon to rescue the princess which caught his attention. I was 10. From that day, until he passed away when I was 25. We played tons of rpg together. It was the one thing we had

It's like you read my diary 🤣 Also my first JRPG. Also have always had a strained relationship with my mom, but she saw me playing this one day and she was totally into it. She started her own file and we'd take turns watching each other play. It's one of the very few times she joined me in my world, and one of my fondest memories.

My first RPG too. I was blessed to have a wonderful relationship with my Dad. We went on so many adventures together, both in real life and in the video games we'd play together. Friday nights, we'd jump in the car and spend hours in the arcade watching quarters evaporate into Gauntlet. I'd huddled in close around our 1st PC to play through the King's Quest games, offering suggestions for overcoming the series many puzzles. Playing through Faxanadu on NES together was a special memory too. I'm sorry so many people have had strained relations with their parents, but I'm happy to see so many have been able to meet them in a positive space thanks to the magic of video games.

@@Grail_Quest yea. It really is rough and sticks with you but you just brought back some great memories. Faxanadu was big for us to . Also Final Fantasy One. My mom snapped out when. we called the Nintendo Hint Line 5 times while trying to BEAT SHADOWGATE & the phone bill was like $500. We didn't get into PC gaming until my father remarried and my stepmother had a PC around maybe 1994. I'd see him on weekends once every other month. Sometimes more. We best KINGS QUEST 5 But I remember trying to play Myst, phantasmagoria, and Night Trap But never getting them to work right. This was before plug and play

Never knew what it was until like 20 years later and found it, then embarked on my own chain of dragon warrior/quest playthroughs. This being probably around the time this video came out. This was the first RPG I ever played. I was probably seven and so my oldest bro was 17. He spent countless hours patiently guiding me through the game after he had beat it. It fostered a deep love of video games in me that persists to this day. I just turned 43 last month and the music from this game never fails to take me back to my childhood. I named my character Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa so every time his name was on screen, it looked like the person talking was screaming 🤣🤣🤣

Will M Hahaha! Yeah exactly the same process for me. Either that, play a little Super Mario Bros, not get very far, then try prince of persia, and think that there was only one level in the whole game because I couldn't last for more than a few minutes without dying. Throw a few more games in there and that was pretty much the process for all those crazy hard nintendo games, or those game concepts a young child couldn't understand without some guidance.

Dragon Quest is the foundation for even non-Dragon Quest games. Dragon Quest Monsters is a love letter back to Pokémon's love letter to Dragon Quest V (where Pokémon borrowed its monster catching mechanic from, as opposed to the SMT style of negotiating with a sentient creature). This is by the creators' admission and their love of Dragon Quest.

RIP nintendo power. Like you, i miss it dearly. I signed up late in its lifecycle (2006) and i've been with it since that time. Now any other gaming mag just looks foreign to me. And yes the artists were very talented too. Gotta love the very last issue's artwork (december 2012 i think..?) it was a complete throwback to the very first issue. Magical time, that was, albeit a sad one.

@Rouzhokuu I was just wondering that too. I took a good look and it appears he did editing after leaving the town. He got exp and did show those battles.

The game reminds me of an old friend I had in elementary school. His name waa/is Darryl and he always played this game. I remember going to his house to watch him play. Darryl, if you're reading this, I hope you are well. You lived on Peninsula street, or the immediate site street.

@28:50 - it's important you understand that she has no tomatoes today. The dramatic pause before she said this was very appropriate.

good god the memories with this theme song. I think this game is responsible for me being able to read and retain things quickly from playing it so much as a kid.

One thing I remember about this game, is when you were super powerful, the King would say “Thou art powerful ENOUGH!! Go! Fight the Dragon”

My favorite game in 5th grade. Note: Dragon Quest was renamed Dragon Warrior for the US release because Enix and Nintendo didn't want to get sued by Sierra Games. Writer and publisher of the Kings Quest and Knights Quest series of games for the PC.

My brothers played this game when I was around 4 - 5. The cave areas legit scared me and the battle and death themes only added to the anxiety. Good times. Love this gsme

Great game, I remember drawing on a piece of paper the route in a dark cave so I could remember how to get back through without using extra light.
