Late respond but if I remember right, they prevent airship boats (levels) flying away. Sometimes (or maybe always?) they change position if you die in them.

The Game Boy Advance version of Super Mario Bros. 3 had better graphics, enhanced backgrounds and Game Boy Player compatibility.

This game is very overrated I’m not s fan of it. I liked Super Mario Bros 1 and 2 better than this. Don’t get me wrong this is still a good game and I can see why many people like it but for me I’m just not a fan of it.
