If you start at Level 18, the first level-up to reach 19 is at 130 lines. After that, it continues at the normal rate of 10 lines per level. If you pick a level 10 or higher, there is a formula for the first level-up instead of just level*10. This prevents the higher levels from being easier max-outs than the earlier ones.

@5LiterRapesCAMAROaSS You'll never see a maxout from level 9 for the following reason: by the time someone is capable of maxing, they will likely refuse to play below 18. Also, there is no "cheat or glitch" involved in starting higher than level 9. The ability to start 10 levels higher is written right in the rule book you recive with the original game. Also level 9 scores are not more imprssive than those on 18 (and less impressive than those on 19)

@5LiterRapesCAMAROaSS It's possible to max from Level 9, but most people go with Level 18 for shorter games and fewer speed changes. My record from Level 9 is 784k, but I haven't played a 9 start for score for quite some time now.

@lammyjammy You can add 10 to the starting level by holding A when you select it. Level 19 is the highest starting level you can select, and it is also the highest survivable speed. Level 29 jumps the speed up again to kill the player, and is essentially the end of the game.

I don't believe this. I can't. This is insane. I don't understand how anyone could rotate the pieces that quickly without ever screwing up. And, I thought NES Tetris had only 9 levels. Does that make me a noob? I could never survive level 9, and since that was the latest level you could start from I thought it was the last one.

@jorenbo For reference, they seriously screwed up the speeds on the PAL localization of NES Tetris in an attempt to account from the change from 60hz to 50hz. Level 19-28 are supposed to be 1/2G speed as seen in this video, with Level 29 being a 1G killscreen. In the PAL release, Level 19 is 1G, and the increased left/right move speed isn't enough to make it very reasonably playable. I'm not sure what the "doesn't max out" comment is about, as it should still do that.

Querty Beighteen you can't. Level 29 is an intentional kill screen. The game kills you every time. That's why this is such a big thing to max the score before the kill screen at lvl29 is amazing. Have to have everything right and score most Tetris's possible to even be close.

I wouldn't say it's any harder to get a 500~600k "first half" score on Level 9 than it is on Level 18 -- it just takes a bit longer. At the end of the day, it's still the Level 19 performance that makes or breaks a max-out attempt.

@benmullen295 Sorry, It is just that I am a very good tetrisplayer and played NES-tetris (european version) and as kitaru2004 said they messed up the European version and it is the only version I have seen. Congrats on playing the game on an emulator (adding effects to the video to make it look like it's played on a classic tv (I'm going to use double parenthesis here, this would NOT show up even if this was a VHS recording (Oh wait, TRIPLE parenthesis, based on a lot of the moves you made, you haven't the slightest idea how to play tetris for a high score))) and slowing the game down, and speeding it up for the video.
