the amount of time Sunsoft spent with sound engineering for the NES is actually ridiculous, but absolutely worth it. I'm really glad that we have such great tunes Sunsoft made for their, especially late, but in general, all of their first party titles.

My favourite NES game from childhood. Took me several months to complete but was well worth the effort. No guide books available back then (at least for me). Got it as a present at ~6 years old. Was too young to grasp the gameplay and story back then. Fast forward couple years and I was hooked. After understanding the plot and hints (as a non-native english speaker) and how to progress in the game the school days went in anticipation of playing the game later that day.

Actually, this game doesn't have the Sunsoft 5B expansion audio chip built in. It uses an FME-7, which is just a memory mapper. It does, however, use the DPCM bass trick that many Sunsoft games, including Gimmick! use.

It's just the Wii U VC release that has that issue - it's the PAL ROM running at 60Hz. The Wii version avoided that by also using the PAL ROM but still emulating it at 50Hz. Whether that's better or worse is your call.

It's a common misconception from American people (which I assume you are) that the pal version games run slower than the ntsc versions. As far as I know, the cause for this is that in America the AC frequency in 60Hz and in Europe it's 50Hz. The TVs have same refresh rate and the NES for that region has to have it's framerate match the TVs refresh rate to display properly. This would also make ntsc games run faster on pal console. Also, due to the way the sound works on the NES it will also cause the music to be higher or lower in pitch if you play game from wrong region. The people who worked on the localization of the games had to recalculate the game's timing and the period values for the sound engine (to produce correct pitch) along with the translation.

It's actually the other way around. NTSC Games are ~17% slower on PAL hardware. PAL optimized games on the other hand run faster on NTSC Hardware because 60Hz is faster than 50Hz. One game that is affected by the opposite is Battletoads. The game was made by Rare and was developed as a PAL game. When it came to the US it wasn't re-timed for NTSC, so the game actually runs too fast. This was later fixed in the Japanese release and the Sega Genesis port. But it's why when people compare the Genesis and NES versions they claim the NES version is harder.

I'd like to add to that the fact that SusiKette was mistaken on the sound being higher or lower pitch. The PAL version of the NES CPU which is also its sound card - a fact I assume they know, since they referenced that as "the way sound works on NES" - was rebuilt with a different clock divider as the 2A07, in order to adapt to the different AC frequency but still emit waves with the same pitch despite them being slower.
