We had a major problem installing the Nest thermostat. We have a two stage furnace that apparently requires special wiring for the Nest. We did not know we had a two stage furnace until I inadvertently blew a fuse in the furnace panel (in the attic). You may have THREE power supply switches to your furnace. You need to turn them all off before you start. We tried to work with Nest and the technician had us shift wires over and over during a one hour period. It was a nightmare of difficulty in handling tiny wiring. Nothing worked. Even the contractor we hired after this debacle was not able to get the Nest to function properly and stop giving error messages. IF YOU ASSUME THAT YOUR FURNACE IS COMPATIBLE WITH NEST YOU MAY BE WRONG. We returned the Nest and put in an Emerson (easy read) thermostat. It works fine and our single story home is very comfortable. Sometimes modern digital equipment is more trouble than it is worth. If you want to install a smart thermostat yourself, or use a contractor who is not a "Nest specialist" you may regret it. Sometimes "simpler" is really better. sanjosemike

One thing to know about the NEST is that it really wants a five wire thermostat cable from the furnace. That will provide the power for the thermostat. I only had a four wire cable from the attic. I had three choices, run a new 5 wire line, a power supply that is sold for just this purpose that you can plug into the wall, or unplug the NEST once in a while and hook it up to a charger with a microUSB connection. I did the third for a while, but then forgot to do it. It never complained. Then I read that if the NEST sees any voltage on any of the thermostat wires, it will grab some of it. I haven't had to charge it for many months now.

I installed ours yesterday. When I installed the back plate, I found that placing it vertically covered all of the artifacts behind it. I saw that there were a couple holes when you installed it horizontally. But, I did skip over that part of the video, so maybe you had a good reason for installing it horizontally. Thank you for a great-quality, helpful video!

I am a brand new Nest owner. Already, before taking it out of the box, I have one major criticism toward nest that needs to corrected ASAP! For the money that Nest charges, they should clearly state on the box that the unit inside the box is Third Generation. I bought two Nest learning thermostats from two stores. The boxes fail to state, THIRD GENERATION. Tomorrow, I will call nest requesting assurance that at least one of my two units is Third Gen. I will return the second unit.

You should be connecting these sort of devices to your 2.4Ghz network. They don't need a lot of bandwidth and would only add overhead your PC, laptop, consoles, phones, etc would have to contend with.

Once you turn off the learning schedule , can you program it simply for heat and a/c separately for 7 days a week no changes ? We are moving into a home with 3 zones, , 2 have the 2015 edition of the nest thermostat . We come from a home of 5/2 programmable thermostats. We do not want a thermostat to read our activity , it varies greatly , and want us to just set for times for heat on and heat down each day and same with a/c . If someone is in around the Boston area and knows how to program it simply let us know and all other advise welcome . ( the sellers did not leave the model or generation of the 2 nests) they look the same as this one. Any help appreciated

No.... Retains all settings and starts up like it was before. It also has an internal battery so it doesn't have to restart. Not meant to run for extended periods off of it though.
@KMHecker Жыл бұрын
Even the earliest NEST has a battery, and as long as the power failure isn't very long (I'm guessing a couple days), it should light up when power is restored, and remember its programming, including the time.

I have just a couple, 1. Does the Nest app alert you when you have big shift/ swing charges in your home temperature? 2. Does it work with your home security system as a smart device?
@WolfHunter10436 жыл бұрын
The only significant alerts you get would be a monthly report comparing usage to the previous month. If for instance your furnace ran all day because someone turned it down, you would not notice that individual occasion by an alert. It pairs with some, depends what you have. I use SmartThings and Alexa which both can control it.

@KMHecker Жыл бұрын
I believe I have the original NEST. It does not have all the bells and whistles, such as WIFI. I don't believe if it doesn't make it obvious you can upgrade, that you can add all those things. This NEST can be set for home and away, and for day and nighttime temp. I thought it needed five wires or it wouldn't charge (necessitating plugging in a microUSB charger), but I read that it grabs any voltage it sees on any wire and charges itself. I haven't charged it in at least a year.

+Todd P I loved it. Sold it with my house but buying a new house hopefully in 30 days and will put another one in. Maybe he was taking about build quality or reliability? Never had an issue with either of those. Seemed very well built. I did notice a savings on my electric bill since it was so easy to schedule temperatures and it detected when I was away. Also enjoyed the ability to login remotely and change it. Last key thing I miss is being able to lock the actual wall unit so younger hands (or girlfriend) can't change the temperature but I can easily unlock it or just use my phone to change it.

@KMHecker Жыл бұрын
The NEST is the thermostat. You'll have to program it. The instructions you have (or can get online) will show where on the base the different colored wires go. If you don't have a fifth wire from the furnace/AC, I believe that the NEST will find some power on one of the four wires and back up the battery. With my original NEST I thought I had to charge it occasionally, but then forgot for a while, and it hasn't needed to be charged in over a year. It found power somewhere.

@@WolfHunter1043 In your video, you showed how the white cover plate is supposed to cover the old holes. Which it did, but when you actually mounted the plate you moved it up and started screwing your plate down, showing the bottom two holes. I just couldn't believe you would leave those holes exposed when you clearly could have concealed all existing holes. Go back and watch your video. Nevertheless, you did a good job with the demonstration of the nest. I have OCD and I guess when people don't pay close attention to the details it bothers me, but I applaud your efforts.
