Following his address at the UN general assembly, September 24th 2009, Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu spoke at the 92nd Street Y.
In his speech, he spoke about what drives him, and recalls his visit to the Lubavitcher Rebbe, in 1984.

the Rebbe was a “Novi” if I have every seen one. The Rebbe was so great, that he was able to guide and unite the whole of the Jewish people, Orthodox (dati leumi), haredi, tradition, even secular. Few could unite even their own sect (like Ovadia Yosef, a true Godal no doubt!). But the Rebbe was beloved by all, effected everyone, and had the ear of everyone that he could reach if he felt danger was near. In fact!!! Point of fact. The Rebbe rejected the Haredim’s obscene anti-Torah, and anti-tradition practice of perpetual “Torah Study”. Thus avoiding service in the military, and condemning their (large) families to a life of minimum wage subsistence if they are lucky for the rest of their lives. The Rebbbe stayed that each Bochum could/should take a year after high school to spend in the kollel almost as a “pre-life honeymoon”. The Rebbe never allowed his Hasidim to avoid military service, or go to secular universities to acquire high value skills. PS The Rebbe himself has a master’s degree in civil engineering from somewhere in France. He wrote his master’s thesis on the Maginot line.
