I really like how they explain that this bomb is cheap and mass produced, it really drives home the point that humans created weapons so destructive and powerful just to kill each other that even a single cheap bomb was able to destroy the collective pinnacle of the Chimera Ant species, Meruem. It ties back into Netero saying that Meruem doesn’t understand the human potential for malice/evolution.

Basically, it's Netero saying "Yeah you ants may be the pinnacle of evolution, but we've been coming up with more and more fucked up ways to kill each other since time immemorial." Which leads into the soft indictment of using nuclear bombs as weapons and the horrible aftermath it has. A lot of the beautiful subtext is lost in the anime adaptation.

I can never get sick of this fight especially the ending. The nuke at the end is incredible. Like one of the reactors say, it’s the IMPLOSION they animated before the nuclear explosion that just adds so much more weight to this screen. You can like feel the destructiveness of this nuke and I feel like the initial implosion really helps sell it’s ridiculous power, which isn’t even one of the strongest bombs that humans have created. Really drives home the line “don’t underestimate the human race and it’s infinite potential for evolution.” I honestly felt pride as a human when the line said as silly as that sounds lol

The Chimera Ant arc is arguably the greatest arc in all of anime, largely because of this fight. The dialogue, the setup to reveal how powerful and interesting Meruem is, the reveal of how incredible Netero is, how outmatched Netero is by Meruem, and the surprise chest nuke. This fight is so well written and executed, and it is the perfect climax.

I was really sad and distraught about Netero losing until Meruem said "I see now, you had me at checkmate from the start.". This gave me a whole new perspective om how epic Netero actually was, he way waaaay ahead of everyone. Meruem never had a chance from the moment he stepped in fight. Either Netero would have beat him, he would die in the explosion and even if he survived the fight and the explosion he would die from the poison. In the end he used one of the worst/evil thing humans had ever invented.. It was something Meruem couldn't even start to fathom... human technology.

WHats also incredible is that the King is CONSTANTLY growing, till the end of the Arc, as a character he matures like crazy. Honestly its sad that things HAD to end like they did, cause Meruem's arc, is in fact a Cool Anti-Hero origine story. And you know whats even Crazier?, HE NEVER DEVELOPPED HIS NEN IN ANY PECULIAR WAY He was CRAZY OP? and after the Bombing and him absorbing Pouf and Youpi powers he was EVEN more OP, basicly the MOST OP existence in the world. But he din't Develop a "special" technique or Ability that ONLY HIM can do, all of his Nen powers are actually BASIC Nen concepts pushed to their Max, but he NEVER did get a Power like Netero, or Killua, or Knuckles or Knov or Kite for example. Not that he needed to since he's so ridiculously OP, but when you think about what his Nen ability would have been , it send shivers down the spine... I do Believe that his obsession with board games and tactics and calculating the probabilities of said games, maybe his Nen ability would have been "Foresight" ?, been able to calculate ALL outcomes at such speed that it would be like him predicting the future in the blink of an eye up to 5 seconds in advance with a 99.99% accuracy.

I always hated this part. Its perfect, it is exactly how humanity is. Meruem is indeed the collective product of his entire species existence, he alone stands atop any humans power...but humans have long since passed making weapons to kill eachother one on one. We moved to killing entire cities in one quick attack..the Miniature Rose is "Cheap and mass produced" meaning its comparatively weak to what else is on the market. This is what Netero meant when he said Meruem had no understanding of humanities evolution. There is NOTHING humanity cannot kill if we truly want to. Meruem fought as the pinnacle of his race vs the pinnacle of humanity but he expected an honorable fight, in the end though we never fight fair.. not if there is enough on the line.

What's so cool about the relation between Netero, Meruem and Komugi is that realistically, Meruem would have lost to Netero eventually without mentally training with Komugi. Yet this would also be a more monstrous Meruem, the Meruem who killed a child just for screaming. Meruem becoming more human technically won him the match, which perfectly encapsulates the theme of this arc. The ants grew powerful, but also less powerful in the fact that they developed emotions, while the humans grew powerful, in the exchange of morality such as Gon threatening to kill Komugi and Netero using the Poor Man's Rose.

I cannot stress this enough, when Netero said “you understand nothing, about humanity’s infinite potential for evolution” what he actually said in the manga was “You understand nothing, about humanity’s infinite potential for malice” which is why meruem became truly frightened, he knew there was something truly horrible about to happen. And makes more sense why he was scared upon hearing that.

ya'll guys need to chill with these comments. Both malice and evolution are written in the manga and both are correct. You might prefer malice as the choice word but one or the other is not wrong or right.

@@jgphantom6 I’m basing this off from the fact that malice has been a consistent point of interest when it pertains to the story since the beginning of the chimera arc, not just from the narrative standpoint but also as it relates to nen. Malice is something that has been heavily attributed to humans exclusively throughout the story, the ants only really influenced by it after consuming malicious people. The ants’ main trait was their rapid evolution, so evolution is the main point the king argues. To me Netero mentioning human malice fits way better into the context of the moment in which he rebukes Meruem.

@@ANTIESTABLISHMENTAL true but you could look the other way as well, meruem made comments about how through evolution he was born as the culmination of his species and therefore superior in every way to humans, as was his entire race. Netero using evolution, is a great way for him to fire back and say that humanity's potential for evolution was just as frightening but in a different way and for meruem to not underestimate how far humanity would evolve when pushed so far. I can see merit in what you're saying but surely you can acknowledge that both these interpretations fit the scenario pretty well.

13:26 The Japanese VA said "shinka" so it is indeed 'evolution' no other meaning... I don't think the choice to ignore the word "akui" (malice) used in the manga as a first choice was done without Togashi's approval but idk for sure ...but still the writers for the anime did that choice with or without Togashi's approval, so the translation/translator has nothing to do with it Togashi put the 2 words in the manga (1. "akui" : 'evil intent, malice' and 2. "shinka" : 'evolution') to give a wider meaning to Netero's idea but obviously you can't say the 2 words in a spoken dialogue so they had to choose one for the anime... I'm actually curious why they chose the 2nd word instead of the 1st one, but it kinda make sense "malice" is very straightforward = humans are evil beyond anything Meruem could imagine, but the use of "evolution" in that context matches Meruem's line about being the pinnacle of his species' evolution... humans evolve too but in a different manner, not through their DNA like the CA but by putting their minds together to achieve smth big... like nukes... One person alone can't achieve that result (in HxH world Netero is peak of individual strength

The reason they said shinka is because you're supposed to prioritize the furigana when it appears. There's no deeper meaning to it than that. Although I will say that they could have put the kanji for akui on screen like they did when Netero said "bad move" to Pitou.

I know every manga writers have their own taste... But I hope, they give the strongest old man in their series a proper way to death. HxH and OnePiece are some of good or prob best examples.
