Netflix Barbarians: Arminius' Combat Skill, Does He Fight Like a Roman?

Ancient Rome was originally an Italic settlement dating from the 8th century BC that grew into the city of Rome and which subsequently gave its name to the empire over which it ruled and to the widespread civilisation the empire developed. The Roman empire expanded to become one of the largest empires in the ancient world, though still ruled from the city, with an estimated 50 to 90 million inhabitants and covering 5.0 million square kilometres at its height in AD 117.
Ancient Roman civilisation has contributed to modern government, law, politics, engineering, art, literature, architecture, technology, warfare, religion, language and society. Rome professionalised and expanded its military and created a system of government called res publica, the inspiration for modern republics such as the United States and France.
The Navy was significant in the Roman conquest of the Mediterranean Basin. During the First punic war the Roman Navy was bolstered and played an instrumental role in the Republic's victory and supremacy in that area. During the imperial period there was no maritime enemy for the Romans, so the Navy was reduced in numbers and tasked with patrol and escort missions. In the 3rd century, when the Empire declined, the Navy was diminished too and from that moment on it wasn's capable of resisting the assaults of the barbarians pirates rising in the Mediterranean.

What is hilarious is the interjection of feminism in any of these historical narratives passed on as fiction. There were no women warriors in the past. Anyone with half a brain can understand that the heavy equipment for long duration in combat without the burden of monthly bleeding not to mention pregnancy would have made it a fantasy. The so-called women "warriors" acted as a banner for a cause. A unifying symbol in world history rather than actual warriors. Myths replete in current times taken from secondary and even tertiary sources from the past cannot be taken seriously. Just imagine a woman with all the burdens of womanhood lugging a heavy shield, and an equally weighted sword or spear banging hand to hand with a man all day without real breather in actual combat doing it. It ain't gonna work and it never did even in today's technology where military studies on women acting as infantry are more prone to injury. This is why an all female unit with male support to lift the heavy burden are needed. The most women did was to be in static defense in the last century. There were no armies composed of women conquering cities and seizing kingdoms. Get off that female warrior fantasy. Feminism is an extremist movement catered to destroy the family unit and society. Women can have equal political rights but let us not pretend they are men with the same strength endowed by nature. That is BS.

I think Maximus in Gladiator comes the closest to what I imagined as a professional soldier of that time. Quick, efficient, his moves almost too quick to see. Plus he's ambidextrous and keeps a level head during battle to spot openings in the enemy's movements.

Veterans were extremely experienced fighters at that age I agree and had incredible confidence. Such and an example In al Yarmouk battle one Muslim veteran removed his armour dropped his shield and fought multiple Roman officers in single combats and killed them.. his name was Dhirar Ibn al Azwar. Not only that but regardless to this the leader of the Greek-Roman infantry Gregory still had the confidence to come out and challenge for a duel on the third day of the battle. Yes he died but as a veteran he fought for many minutes before the duel was lost for him.. Veterans in any army at that age weren't cowards or weak.

However they fought like Romans they where equipped like Romans and they had Roman Formations especially the Infantry and the Heavy cavalry formations. So Eastern Roman byzantine empire had a lot in common with the western one at least in Military's matters as they inherited it all from the Romans ( also note that the Greek Infantry Legion under Gregory was the Fifth Macadonian legion)) it was the last actual Roman Legion. imo .. "who is the bad guy" is for the most part often a matter of opinion and who you ask .. Arminius has an excuse: Musculata has to be terrible armor to fight in. You can't twist your torso at all because it's a solid plate that covers all your bendy parts, you lose mobility in your arms because the cut out for the arms is minuscule, etc. In some ways that's why it's prestige armor. "Look at me I'm so important I can show up in armor that is extremely protective but makes it impossible for me to kill anyone. I have people for that."

Musculata is great for fighting in a phalanx - where you don't need that much mobility in the first place. Horrible for fighting one on one, as it prevents you from making full use of your body. So I don't COMPLETELY agree, as musculata was successfully used by the Greeks centuries prior to Rome, and there is a very good reason they must have continued to use it. But yes, not the best in a brawl.

I am German and love this series. The only two major things that were cringy to me were the too close father son relationship that Arminius had with Varus. You punch a kickboxer in the street and maybe he/she would be confused at the beginning, but then he/she would stand up, made some kind of defensive guard and start beating you to death

For some reason an experienced veteran has chosen to go into combat in his new armour that's intended more as a sign of status than the efficient and effective armour that he's used to. He takes no helmet nor a shield, since he has the musculata of an equites he could have had any of their other equipment. When Arminius fights he doesn't utilise his armour to take blows and then close and riposte with his gladius. Once he closes his opponent is essentially defenceless, much like a boxer inside the guard of another except with 50cm of pointed stabbing sword.

I've noticed this in a lot of barbarian vs civilized shows in the recent years (Vikings for example). The settled imperial or royal troops are always depicted as incompetent and terrible fighters compared to the ubermensch barbarians. It really just ruins the whole thing.

@@cahallo5964 That's a common notion but what actual evidence is there to support that? Roman troops and those of other medieval kingdoms weren't some peasant simply given a pointy stick and told to fight, they were trained for months and many Romans would have years of experience in war.

@@jacobcantrell82- - Roman Legionaries were well-equipped professional soldiers, especially after the Marian Reforms in 107 B.C.. The Western Roman Empire ended 350+ years before the Viking Invasions. On the other hand, most medieval armies (especially during the Viking Age) were made up largely of poorly trained peasants, armed with whatever implements they could find, led by a few well armed nobles. Any conflation of these two is definitely not supported by history. A Roman Legion would probably be more equivalent to a Late Middle Ages (14th-15th Century) army with Archers/crossbowmen, Armored Men at Arms (inexpensive armor & often thick leather & felt) & Knights (mounted & on foot) in steel armor...

Usually describing northern people as these frightening super men who are more beast than man. It doesn't mean that a Roman is necessarily going to be a bad fighter, but their style of warfare isn't about valorous single combat, but rather about keeping formations and following orders properly. So while they train hard, their skills won't necessarily translate to different scenarios.

I recently rewatched HBO series Rome. Would love to see you review it. I know it’s older and like a long Shakespeare play but this video reminds me of how they portrayed Legionnaires and veterans. They were rightly feared even by criminals because they knew how to fight and were well conditioned. Hand to hand combat is brutal and if you survived it you were pretty formidable

Totally agree. Especially that hit what caused the wound was hilarious... It was a shaft hit, then a pull back. There were simple not enough energy to scratch the plate armor. And on the left side... Normally it would be needed just to catch the axe and stub, or cut the fingers on the shaft. In the other hand; so many wide cuts with a gladius... Why? Almost not a direct attack to stab the german. (or the other german..., whatever.) If this guy would be a professional auxillira legatus, as supposed to be, he would as soon as possible shorten the distance, to render the two handed axe almost useless and stub the opponent. Fight over, go home, there is nothing interest here.

Arminius was an Equestrian, a cavalryman. No closed ranks. They did use a form of Scutum. Should have been carrying a longer sword instead of the Gladius. The way cavalry fighting worked in the classical world, they did see a lot more individual fighting.

I'll make the observation that he was plot-driven to be hit in the side, so the special effects only had to show the wound as little as possible since even a tunic will cover it. Yes, an arm wound can be covered by a bandage or dressing, but the torso wound also looks worse, letting the audience see how tough Arminius is when he continues doing stuff in the series in spite of it, and leaves both arms available for use in following episodes. (Or, they had no real idea what they were doing, and someone went "hur, dur, hit to body ...")

Hey there! Great channel you’re running - thanks to you, I’ll be able to reliably explain to my son why the Roman army never adapted gladiator helmets. Speaking of whom - he also told me that the Roman army did not use battle axes in battle - with one tiny exception - the rebellion of Julius Florus and Julius Sacrovir against Rome in 21 AD. There the rebels apparently used Crupellarii gladiators in their first line, and, as they were equipped in the plate armor of the day (llorica segmentata with modifications), the gladii of the legionaries were rendered almost useless. What did go through the armor were the axes that the legionaries usually considered tools. Is it therefore so unbelievable that an axe could in fact dent the llorica musculata with more ease than a sword? Anyway, I love the detail you go into in the videos- great work, and I hope to see more awesome films from you! All the best!

You are 100% right. We would expect these cinematographic slips from old works, like those in the 1930's, but not in the 21'st century! The only possible explanation is that the people involved in these shows actually don't know *OR* , even worse, they do know better but consciously decide to do it wrong. I think the reason why they make him looked panicked and incompetent while fighting at times and like an expert in other fights is because in hollywood the first idea for a method of conveying visually that the protagonist is in danger in a fight is to make it look like he is losing. Instead of having him take a hit and lose his weapon like you suggest they instead default to "if the hero looks worried and fumbling around then the audience will be worried" I don't think it's because of a lack of imagination. I think it's because either their fight choreographer is too lazy to orchestrate a believable fight between veterans or the director/creative staff are forcing them to perform the fight that way because as I said before they think it looks more dramatic. And I admit it did when I was a kid and didn't know anything about fighting. But knowledge kills enjoyment sometimes.

It's probably the latter. Director's tend to stick to well used, well known tropes instead of trying something new. But, to be fair, I think that audiences are so used to some of these tropes that if you changed things and avoided some of these common tropes, you'd lose a lot of the general audience whose only knowledge of fighting comes from movies and TV shows with their tropes.

I think I've said this before, and I think it's worth saying again... Seeing you play Ryse: Son of Rome and analyse it for historical accuracy (and lack thereof) would be very interesting to me. In defense of him looking like an idiot in the fight, he is fairly bewildered, caught off guard, and more importantly he doesn't *want* to harm the guy attacking him because he's basically kin to him. They could have made him more competent in the fight and there's no excuse for the armor getting punched through like tissue paper, but I think even the most experienced soldier, when presented with the number of emotionally compromising events in short order, would be more than a bit shaken up. I mean, this happens just after: -he has to confront going back to his people -he's dealing with the turmoil of resurfaced trauma -he's conflicted with knowing his friend is in deep shit by taking the eagle -he understands the guy attacking him and doesn't want to cause him more pain

They often cite "artistic license". But it hardly ever ensures to make their production more entertaining as a result.

also time is a factor. If you look at the movies from the 50th or even 10th...about the roman time, or mediaeval time - accuracy was not a thing. It's relatively new - due to a much more educated audience and also of course great teachers like Metatron :)

@@sevenproxies4255 Master and Commander is a good example of historical accuracy still being extremely entertaining. If it had been “hollywoodized” I think it would have ended up being a one off forgettable b list film, but due to this not being the case it’s usually considered an excellent film.

About what you said that in the Bronze Age knew to hit around the armor. Evidence can be easily found by reading the Iliad by Homer, where in battle scene there are scores of wounds described on the arms and legs, and very few on the body itself. While striking the body, weapons are described to glide and bounce on the armor almost as if deviated by a god or another. This is clear evidence of fighters knowing to strike around the armor. Also, historians believe, a consequence of the figure 8 shield, that left part of the thigh open (Wounds on thighs in the Iliad are by far the most commonly described).

Did Arminius really want to kill him though? I thought he had previous relationships with most of the people in that village. So maybe his poor fighting performance stemmed from his conscience or lack of desire to kill?

If he wanted that he would have known how. As a veteran he would have known which blows are lethal and non, so he easily should have been able to cut or stab the guy's arm and disarm him. Yes he would have been taken by surprise at first since he didn't know when the guy would attack him even though he knew an attack would happen, but after that he should have mopped the floor with him.

@@matthewcooper4248 we can't know how experienced the other combatant was, so it's a bit hard to say he should have easily beaten him. But we can definitely say he shouldn't have acted like he did. And probably moped the floor with his opponent. Especially if said opponent kept trying to hit him only in the armour.

The other guy is the town's blacksmith and he's attacking with a woodcutter's axe. Maybe he has some fighting experience but definitely not a professional soldier.

@@mrkiky That's not an absolute certainty. The line between "soldier" and any other profession for a man at the time was very blurred. Especially in Germania, since their tribes didn't have "professional soldiery" to begin with. Every man who was of a fit age and constitution would be expected to partake in wars when the need arise. So this blacksmith could've been a veteran of several battles. It's hard to know just by looking at their profession.

Hello Metatron... I agree with everything you say here, and i love the way you put it over. i'm a great fan of VM Manfredi, and I've read his 'wolves of Rome'. That was the first time I'd ever got into the story of Teutoburg, and i enjoyed his telling of it. I had always imagined Arminius to be a big, strapping giant of a German, who was on his way to becoming a heroic figure in Roman society. Evidently my idea of Arminius was not the same as the producers of this series. I only became aware of the betrayal motive between Arminius and Varus while watching 'Barbaren' for the 2nd time. But anyhow...yes, Arminius is a veteran, and supposedly a man skilled in combat. When I watched that fight scene, i was also quite surprised at how badly Arminius fought the German. I mean, here is this combat trained professional Roman soldier, a veteran of real combat in real battles, up against a German whose sole experience of fighting is against neighbouring German tribes. Both men might have combat experience and some training (presumably German tribes trained their young men to fight)... but Arminius level of skill would be so much higher than that of the German. yet in the scene, it looked liked Arminius was firstly taken by surprise, then being beaten to the ground, almost, then struggling to come back against his German opponent. It didn't look right at all! As you say, the rest of the series was very enjoyable, but that fight scene was really quite stupid! But then, I find fight scenes in movies these days are often at best unrealistic and at worst quite ridiculous... esp. when you have a normal physique woman fighting and beating a bigger, stronger and muscular/heavy male opponent. It's suddenly become ;the fashion' to have smaller women beating much larger men in fights... which then leads to the stupidity of the 'women not as strong as men?' query of your other video. Our culture is doing some very strange things to its perceptions of reality. Ciao Metatron!

Metatron, I 100% recommend to watch the channel of Corridor Crew about stunts and CGI in movies and series, to fill your arguments. Learning how action scenes are made and how much a good action crew (cameramen, stuntmen, choreography, screenwriters, etc) can improve a movie or series gives you understanding about how some big productions waste their money and how some people can do so much with so little. Considering things in movie fights like the thickness of a material , its weight, terrain of the fight, nature of the fighters, their stamina, skills, etc, helps the audience to believe what they are watching. I love your videos.

New trope added to the list: "Butter armor" - Your armor don't provide any protection no matter how great your armor truly is. You may cut it, slash, pierce by any melee weapon or projectile.
