The main reason Disney got special district status - it's not the only one - is because the county wasn't equipped to provide the services, and had no clue how to handle theme park construction. Special district status allowed them to set the appropriate building codes, and install the necessary infrastructure quickly. (Disney even had a better telephone company than anywhere else in Florida for years.) The one power they don't have is the power to arrest you - the county maintains a sheriff's station on the property for that. (Like any business, they can detain you until an officer arrives, given the right circumstances.) It's one of the better laws the state legislature ever managed to pass, given what Central Florida was like Before Disney compared to now, and due mostly to Disney. As icing on DeSantis's cake, in their rush to punish Disney, they forgot that if the special district goes away, Orange County has to immediately pick up the annual tab (over $100 million) for all the services Disney now funds, and probably absorb a billion dollars in debt because the bond issues originally backed by Disney will almost certainly transfer to them. (Or, rather, the county taxpayers.) Someone did introduce an amendment to the state senate bill to study the side effects, but it was immediately voted down in favor of immediately rescinding the special district. And I thought Florida politics was bad when I lived there 20+ years ago...

Thank you for lending your knowledge to this discussion. I never really thought about the logistics of Disney having special district status. Florida needs to think ahead before they make decisions like these.

We have the stupidest financial system on the planet. Netflix lost some subscribers and dropped a tiny bit in terms of real value, and suddenly it's stock price plummeted because some old hedge fund managers got jittery, and that's so much considered the "value" of the company that they are changing their financial practices in a way that will probably lose them more subscribers in order to make the line move back up in the short term. The stock price dropped /because/ of a real drop in the value of the company, which means that this real value is measurable, but instead we use how jittery a bunch of old white guys are at any given moment as the basis for our economy, and let it effect our decisions more than the real problems any institution faces. It's like a jacked up bizarro version of using a groundhog to predict the weather except our punxsutawney phil is a bunch of Republican donors and if David Koch sees his shadow and gets startled, Netflix halves in value until lil Davy comes out of his hole.

Speculative investors (economic gamblers imo) can be traced back as the root cause of a myriad of economic problems worldwide. Netflix is the least of our worries. We can live without netflix.. It's important stuff like raw lumber, that hedge funds are buying up all supply of and driving prices into the stratosphere. The supply and availability of raw lumber hasnt changed much, the tree kept growing during covid but the price has quadroupled. Same goes for oil, russia is still happily selling it's oil and supply has remained pretty much stable but stockmarkets are buying up all supply and driving prices. There are _no_ shortages, just a minority of rich people getting richer by hoarding resources and making it seem like supply doesn't meet demand.

Once upon a time, when cable was new, the big deal was there were no ads. Now everything,🤨everywhere has ads. What I can't figure out, is how it's profitable, to sell (through ads) stuff to people who don't have enough money to buy entertainment, without ads.

Companies pay to have their ads show up. For example, if Pepsi wanted ads on Netflix, they would pay Netflix an agreed upon amount to run Pepsi ads on Netlfix, likely generated from the amount of subscribers and or views. I was one of the people who cancelled their Netflix subscription. The #1 reason was because they raised their prices yet again. Netflix has great content, but not consistently. Netflix used to be cheap, so I just kept the subscription even if I wasn't watching as much, now I'm not willing to just let it go. The 2nd reason, I cancelled is because I realized there's no perk to being a loyal subscriber. Since there's not always something to watch on Netflix. I decided I'll just resubscribe for a single month twice a year. Catch up on the content I actually like and then unsubscribe again. Why pay every month when I can just be a little patient and watch the same content in a consolidated period of time. I only watch 2 shows on Apple TV. So I pay for it once a year once the new season of both shows are out. These streaming companies have too much competition now. They need to reward loyal subscribers with lower prices.
