@Truth Teller many people are in the wrong in the movie. It’s the fact that before it’s specified that Grace has that mental impairment and was in fact seducing them purposefully, they continued to sexualize her whilst simultaneously comparing her to a child. Then whilst talking about her like she’s a child and ‘unknowingly’ seducing them, they blame her for their wrongings too. They already have an age gap, they create the atmosphere of a mother and her daughter w certain actions and words - and then proceed to engage in sexual activities after doing so. It’s weird and wrong on both sides

I was about to comment about this! (I'm a lesbian as well.) This movie really gives me "hetero man fantasy" vibes, which is so often the case with "steamy" and sexy wlw content. It's so annoying; we so rarely get lesbian or even just wlw content that doesn't cater to the male gaze or fetishize wlw relationships and sex. Stories about "steamy love affairs with a married woman who has sex with *gasp* another woman" always give me that vibe. It makes sense here as well, beyond just that storyline + wlw sex, because there's that weird innocence thing at play that I can imagine could also play into hetero male fantasies. Like, I doubt very many lesbians or bi+ women would actually find this steamy or sexy, even if the writing was decent. It definitely gives for-men vibes :')

Hopefully wlw media representation will get better soon (I doubt it, but we can hope) and we can start seeing ourselves portrayed onscreen in a way that doesn't cater to straight male fantasies and doesn't show us as predators or something else that's completely off the mark :') Sending love

There was buzzfeed article about this movie that pointed out how lesbians are often portrayed as older woman younger woman pairs and their attraction is based on them mirroring each others past/future ("I hope I look as good as you when im your age") and instead of being attracted to each other as whole people, and it was really interesting

That is is a pretty interesting point butttt since this is supposed to be like a "Taboo romance" or this trope is often used a A Taboo romance lolita type shit I feel like this mirroring stuff is just to justify Pedophilc shit. It could have been included in a contract, sometimes when an actor signs to do one movie sometimes other movies (usually bad/cheap movies that need a famous lead) are included in the bundle. So it’s possible she signed on to do something she really wanted, but had to do this to keep the other role. Also the movie could have not been written yet or completely rewritten and they got her attached or maybe she just needed that Netflix money.

And of course it was a romance, and the entire time everyone else was enjoying it and I'm like, this is so bad, I got toxic vibes tho I honestly don't remember it that well, tho it might've been brat taming vibes, kinda taming of the shrew kind of thing?. I think that when people with mental illnesses are portrayed as murders, stalkers, or villains in general, there always comes a point in the portrayal where they aren't seen as real sympathetic people anymore. They become ominous versions of their illness personified and they stay that way until the hero kills them and they become 'normal' again as they die. I just think that building a character beyond 5 traits, that are only there to prove the character is mentally ill, is the simplest way to better how the characters come across.

My dad works in mental health and I asked him something similar with how crime and mental health relate. He told me t it is much more common for people with mental disorders to be the victim of violence than being the perpetrator and how many killers etc. don't necessarily have a mental illness. He also said that when a person with a mental illness it's the attacker it is normally in self-defence, like during an episode their paranoia has convinced them whole heartedly with out a shadow of a doubt that their roommate or neighbour is going to or trying to kill them so they have to do something to stop them to save their own life be it killing them first or with a less lethal attack. A lot of the time they would have no recollection of the attack or will stricken with grief and/or guilt just like anyone else would if they found out they did something like that. I feel like media uses mental illness as too much of a scapegoat for violence (villanizing vulnerable people) instead of just showing the fact that some people are terrible with no real reason, like if someone believes that there should be gay conversation therapy, they most like don't have a mental disorder, just a horrible view and little empathy for those they don't understand

As someone who is an advocate for mental health in addition to having a mental health disorder, I think there should be a law created that says any movie/tv show that involves any character having any mental health disorder is required to have several mental health professionals and people who have the same mental health disorders as the characters involved with every part of the project, from the scripts to filming and even editing to ensure that the final project is not disrespectful, harmful, or stigmatizing to anyone who has any mental health disorder. Because when you don't have anyone who has either first-hand or professional knowledge of mental health issues involved with movies and tv shows, you end up with something that does nothing but further enforce the stereotypes and stigmas around mental health which causes harm to those of us who do have a mental health disorder. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

I feel like so many movies, especially when it's with girls in relationships or girls on girls, people will sum the movie up to just sex. Like "Blue is the warmest color" was supposed to be about exploring lesbian relationships and sexuality and how Adèle messed her relationship up. But because it showed sex, most people just remember it for the sex scenes. I think that's why people are so focused on the sexual relation in this movie rather than realizing that this kind of behavior is weird and that it's not okay
@anissab.7260
@anissab.7260 3 жыл бұрын
@drosera I know that was another big thing that came out. One of the critics was that it had become more like porn scenes (fake and unrealistic) rather than being true to what would happen in a lesbian dynamic. Also that the director put a heavy emphasis on filming the sex scenes. The actresses both said that they swayed in between feeling like a sex worker and feeling like they were growing from the experience. I've read that they had silicone molds over themselves when filming which made them more comfortable, but I can't say it with certainty. I used Blue is the warmest color because it was a film that had potential to talk about genuine struggles and shown the rawness of two girls loving each other while struggling with themselves. But due to the graphic scenes of them, most people who watch it only see the sex. Especially when it came to the American audience

Hey, I know about this! Previously known as "multiple personality disorder", DID (dissociative identity disorder) and OSDD (otherwise specified dissociative disorder) (these are the US's terms) are trauma disorders. The name was changed to reflect the fact that they're not actually a personality disorder, but a dissociative disorder formed in childhood. As children, we all have separate "ego states". For example, an infant will have separate states for being hungry or happy or in pain. As we age, these develop and begin to merge to form our identity. DID and OSDD and their counterparts are a result of trauma interfering with this before the age of ~9 years old. When a child goes through trauma and is capable of dissociating to a high degree, these ego states can be essentially "walled off" to deal with the event. This can mean, for example, a specific event can be tied to one of these ego states and then blocked from the rest of the consciousness. People describe these as "amnesiac walls" because they generally disallow memories between "parts". These will continue to stay blocked off and can grow into their own consciousness. People call these "alters" or "parts". People with these disorders often call ourselves "systems". Due to the nature of how these disorders form, we are more likely to be victims of abuse than to perpetuate it. It's a coping technique employed by a child undergoing repeated trauma, abuse, and/or neglect. Getting a diagnosis for this disorder is also very difficult because it exists to protect the brain. Many systems are "covert", meaning a switch between alters is hardly noticeable even to the system. Alters exist to fill rolls needed by the child at the time of forming.

Hey just so you know this theory is widely disliked among plural people. It suggests being plural is a broken form of being a singlet when there are plural people who don't have any issues with that, and it's also not true to how many people have developed.

It's also a theory which I particularly hate for the whole ranking traumas sort of thing. The idea that if you have one level of trauma you have unintegrated emotional parts but not distinct identities, it just kinda shits on people with bpd/ptsd as well imo. Because... I know this aspect isn't very explicit but it feels like saying a person with DID has experienced more trauma than someone with bpd and that seems shitty even if you just mean their perception of the trauma.

I’m not an author or anything but you can’t really just WRITE a good book? Don’t you have to have motivation and inspiration? Tbh I sympathize with Marie being asked to just write a whole goddamn book
@DisabledDragon
@DisabledDragon 3 жыл бұрын
I think it depends a lot on the author for the extent to which you need to wait for inspiration, and motivation can mean a lot of things. Money is a motivation (particularly if you actually know you'll *make* some money), as are deadlines (especially when connected to something like money). Trying to figure out *what* to write, some people need to wait (not really an option if writing is your primary income), some will look for it (I often read folklore and I do really well sometimes with given prompts for anthologies or classes, so I'm trying to find a more controlled method of getting them) and some people are Stephen King or R.L. Stine, and I have no idea what they're doing, but evidently it gives them enough ideas for their massive output.
@asexualtrickster

Writing is, first and foremost, a job. So, regardless of inspiration or motivation or not, if writing is your CAREER you gotta sit your ass down at your desk and just WRITE. Now, what you write on those days when you're not feel motivated or inspired may not make it into the final draft, but the point is you've just gotta keep putting words down until you get to the end. If you only write when you're feeling motivated/inspired or when "the Muse is with you" then you're never going to make it. So the fact that she is an established published author and that writing is her career, 100% she should be able to sit down and write a book. Now whether or not that book is any good is another matter, but most authors can't really tell if what they're working on is worth publishing until it's finished. But she should have the discipline, at this point in her life, to sit down and churn out a generic novel. And honestly if she's as popular as the movie seems to make her, it should sell decently either way. I mean not every one of Stephen King's books is a masterpiece but he's still Stephen fucking King. -source: I'm a Writer.

sadly that's not how it works all the time, sometimes a book is a passion project - but for example, Warrior Cats was a pitched idea, the original author didn't even like the idea (but wrote the books anyway) and then it was written by multiple authors. it wasn't ever a passion project - it was a product. A lot of series are created this way.

As someone who once was very close to someone with DID...one it doesn't work this way and it's disgusting they sexualize (while also treating it as child like at the same time disgustingly) and stigmatize it, two...wtf is this magic charm thing Grace seemingly has and how is it related? Like sure, one might get along with someone in the system more than another or find them attractive personality wise, but it's not like their other personalities have love potion or something.

@@anyone1111 Haven't seen it or read it but Lolita is supposed to have an unreliable narrator that is incredibly disgusting and twist every little thing to justify the fact he's attracted to a child. You SHOULD be revolted and disgusted because you're not a creep. The book is reputed to be a hard read because of that! In fact there was also backlash because people didn't get that they weren't supposed to side with the protagonist/narrator and that the narration is heavily biased. People legit thought it was romanticizing and promoting pedophilia

To be quite honest, the way that this movie is framed makes the last half feel like a delusion. The editing and framing is absolutely confusing, and downright atrocious. After all, the final twist is just so, so stupid. The framing of Grace is just so creepy and unrealistic that it makes me feel that the murder scene was just a delusion. (although we do see the grave of the lady she killed, but still.) The point is, this movie's framing devices lead to confounding conclusions and no difference between headspace and reality.
