The problem is kids in America are going watch this and believe it's 100% truth, go their lives without ever second guessing it. If you do this enough times you've successfully rewritten history for your ideology and agenda. They should add a disclaimer at the very start that the movie is not factual, but good luck with that. Don't call it a documentary if it's fiction. End of story.

Inaccuracies are bound to happen even among historians as even they themselves come up with different answers which they later establish as fact in their work through various evidence. So omitting every "inaccuracies" from a documentary may not be the best move. HOWEVER, blatant inaccuracies such as Cleopatra being black despite having clear evidence of her Hellenic heritage with all the murals depicting the queen with a white skin, that should 100% not be allowed to be included in a documentary. Let alone be called as one.

Cleopatra the 6th was a Greek Pharaoh, the last Pharaoh of Egypt before the Roman Empire took over. She hailed from the Ptolemy dynasty. Ptolemy was one of Alexander the Great's generals. They were childhood friends. They got tutored, all of them, by Aristotle of Athens. They were educated in History, Poetry, Military Strategy, Music, Philosophy, Ethics and some Mathematics, from the age of 5 till the age of 19. Cleopatra's name in Greek is "Κλεοπάτρα". Breaking down the name, we get the word "Κλέος", (Cleos) which means Glory, and the female version of "Πατρίς", (Patris) which means "home country". Therefore, the word Cleopatra means "The Glory of the Homeland". That's how badass she was. Funnily enough, there is another famous Greek mythological figure who ALSO has the word "Κλέος" in his name - Herakles, or "Ηρακλής". Herakles' name is an insult to the goddess Hera - his name breaks down to the words " Ήρα" and "Κλέος", which means "The Glory of Hera", which is of course an insult since he was living proof of her cheating husband, Zeus. Classic Zeus to add insult to injury, but that's another story. Making Cleopatra black and calling it a fucking documentary is an insult not only to myself as a Greek, but to every single Classicist out there who devoted their lives in studying the classical Ancient civilizations - Rome, Greece, Egypt, China, Japan etc. Yours truly, a Greek who's HISTORY (not Mythology, this is actual fucking recorded HISTORY) is being butchered.

A brief history lesson: After Alexander the Great died, his empire was divided to his 3 generals. Ptolemy inherited Egypt and the ME, and founded the Ptolemeic Dynasty. Cleopatra was a direct descendant. They kept their bloodline pure by questionable marriages. She is described to had had black hair and pale skin, and that made her stand out from the rest of the egyptians. She got rid of her siblings (assassination, coup-de-etat, poisoning) to get the crown of Egypt. She was not a benevolent queen trying to protect her people. She was thirsty for power, that is why she went to great lengths to seduce both Caesar and Mark Anthony. Power was all that she craved. Some accounts state that she even had blue eyes, which again goes against the accounts of how ancient egyptians, greeks and any other african people looked like. She had pure bloodline of the ancient macedonians.

The issue is who says a fact is a fact and how are we sure what they think is true? If you base it off what the majority of people think then you'll have wrong facts, if you base it off what "experts" think you have a small group of people telling others what the truth is and they can easily abuse that power and present their own ideas as fact and then the people can't question it. If you get a group of color blind people (with the same type) and ask them what color a tree is and they all say blue, to them it is factually true that the tree is blue but since the majority of people know that trees aren't blue then its not factually true. That's what he means when opinions and facts are mixed up all the time. Even the things most of us agree is fact can always change just like his science example. With this none of us where alive to know. Not a single person not even modern Egyptians so not even they would KNOW what the facts are. They just have to assume what is true based off what they know and if you get your information from different places different people will have different "facts" as soon as you start punishing people on a governmental level for false "facts" you give power to people to decide what is a fact and not and that's a slippery slope that leads to these fact givers having even more of a reason to give false facts because they will be believed more.

@@razerscale3590 You're kind of lost. Nothing in this universe is a fact just because someone called it a fact. There's always a scientific process behind it. A scientific theory becomes a fact once it undergoes repetitive, extensive, and thorough research and peer review. The objective truth doesn't care about what the majority thinks. If 1+1=2, and let's say 90% of Earth's population believes that 1+1=3, once science (math) is applied to the process, it won't change the fact that the objective truth is 1+1=2. That means that if all the experts in Archeology have found that Cleopatra VII was of Greek Macedonian descent, then she is of Greek Macedonian descent regardless of what other non-expert individuals think. Just remember that you don't see faith healers working in hospitals for the same exact reason that you don't see Netflix producers/writers working in archeological sites. Knowledge, Experience, and Expertise matter. Q: That being said, can facts be faked? A: Yes, if it did not undergo peer review. Q: Can facts change over time? A: Yes, depending on the subject that we are talking about. The race and ethnicity of a dead person won't change over time, but the estimated birthdate, death date, and age might change as technology and innovation advance because archeological dating is not pinpoint accurate.

The problem is people live under this false narrative believing that the Arabs totally invaded Egypt and North Africa, “colonizing” it and effectively replacing the native “black” population. When we have actual historical and modern evidence that shows the Arabs had a very minimal influence on the Egyptian’s genetics. They didn’t really colonize Egypt, they just replaced the rulers and converted the people to Islam. So based on evidence it is very accurate to say that the modern Egyptians are the same, or at least very close to the ancient Egyptians in terms of appearance.

I agree, but I still think 'story adaptations' that have creative freedom should still try being as historically accurate as possible because if you don't, you're pretty much lying to your audience whether it was through your own biases towards history or your own ignorance. Braveheart for example is notorious for being so historically inaccurate that it becomes propaganda. Having creative freedom with history is fine in my opinion as long as a disclaimer is present stating that creative liberties have been taken and this film or whatever is not an entirely accurate depiction of history

They could easily do that. All they'd have to do is invent a world, a setting, and write a story where that happens, and people would pay to see it. They could have a whole franchise built out from this other world they created, with other kingdoms. And they could have the protagonist of the first character, who rose to power, becoming a major staple character in later installments when they introduce new protagonists later on. That depends on a lot of things. The facts are that the US was founded by religious extremists who were pretty much the equivalent of a Christian Taliban, complete with barbaric and cruel religious courts. This is a historical fact. However, what is being taught as the US creation myth is the opposite - that the country was founded on the principle of religious tolerance. This has resulted in a society that is, to a significant degree, religiously tolerant. It's not as visible now when a lot of Europe is religiously tolerant as well via another means (secularisation), but was a significant (and one can cogently argue positive) difference for a long time. So social engineering via the propagation of untruths is not only effective, but can, depending on the goal, have a positive effect. The problem in this case is that they're trying to social engineer the US by distorting the history of other civilisations, which is not within their gift, and given how dominant US media is in the world is going to have a strong negative effect across the world. I'm also not sure it is helpful to the cause of black emancipation to lie in this way, as the lie is easily debunked. There were plenty of African-led civilisations in Africa that one could make a documentary about. People of Nubian descent likely played a big part in Egypt's society as well, so depicting that truthfully would also advance that goal without rewriting history.
@Dragaur17
@Dragaur17 Жыл бұрын
@@paulie-g The US wasn't founded by religious extremists though. At best you could say that was who originally settled here. The actual country was founded during/after the revolution and later the bill of rights guaranteed religious freedom as well as the freedom of speech/the press/right to bear arms and so on. Now there have been some things we have stumbled on along the way, but unless you are talking about 50 years ago I don't think anyone has been taught that for some time. Everyone knows about things like the Salem witch trials. I was taught about that and other negative things and I went to a very Christian school. Now you could argue enough isn't taught about those days in detail and I would agree. You can say the same thing about things like WW1 though for example. Anyway not looking for a debate just giving a different perspective. As for manipulating the history of other countries to match an agenda I couldn't agree more. Anyone with half a brain and the ability to seek out information can confirm that Cleopatra wasn't black. She was Macedonian and maybe some Syrian. Basically she looked like many other Mediterranean. Not to mention she was insanely inbred as were a lot of rulers back then going up to even the early 1900s but their family took it to an extreme. I do agree that places/times like the Ethiopian empire would have been more interesting and make more sense. But they wanted to pick a well known name that everyone would recognize and twist it into something else to match an agenda rather than educate on something in history that few people know about.
@paulie-g
@paulie-g Жыл бұрын
@@Dragaur17 Those are fair points, I just didn't want to write a wall of text going into details (that said, religious tolerance according to the founders was, shall we say, limited if we're being generous, but that's a detail that gets elided over time). However, I guarantee you that if you ran a survey in the US asking about the pilgrims, what you would get back is "people fleeing to the New World to escape religious persecution in England" when, in fact, it was English religious zealots looking for a place where *they* could religiously persecute. This very much gets conflated with the founding. My point though was that historical myths perpetuated for the purpose of social engineering can, in theory, have positive outcomes. I still detest that, but it's not absolutely unacceptable to me if a country does that to their own history, but it's beyond despicable to distort another's history to clean up a mess in your own country. I used the pilgrims/US example because it's pretty much the only example I can think of where rewriting history has had a positive effect - religious zealots settled the country, but somehow current inhabitants seem to think religious tolerance is a core value? That's got to be a win. Everywhere else you look recently, like Ukraine (and other post-Soviet, or post-Yugoslavian states) rewriting its history post-1991, has resulted mostly in genocidal civil wars, forced displacement, ethnic cleansing and other fun things.

This was done to make African Americans think the whole of Africa is just black people. North Africa is predominately a Muslim area and most of them have a tanned skin and not black.

I have a very close Egyptian friend that lives in Cairo and she is very fair skinned with dark black hair. People either assume all Egpytians are full darker-skinned arabs or black, and it's absolutely not the case, Egyptians and Levantine peoples are very fair skinned compared to the rest of the Middle East. Cleopatra is Greek.

Generally, our skin is very diverse, mostly more tanned than white people and our hair is very dark and curly as well. It depends tbh, my family all look like they are from different countries entirely and not related but somehow, they all look very Egyptian. Like most of the time, i can tell by first hand when someone is Egyptian whether their skin is fair skinned, tanned, black, if their eyes of hair is light or dark.

They have so many Nubian queens to pick from, this specific Cleopatra, her lineage was appointed after Alexander the Great and was a clear Macedonian Greek. There may have been some African blood along the line, but the Macedonian Greeks tended to marry amongst each other, even much more so once they became a Pharaoic Dynasty. This is such important history and calls for upmost integrity, just as the Nubian royalty also calls for upmost integrity.

I really dont think there was any africa in the ptolemic line. They were well known to inbreed to keep the line of leaders greek and cleopatra was the first to even bother to learn the Egyptian language. On top of that, one of Alexanders the Greats main issues in life was his Macedonia soldiers not bein pleased with his takin on and liking the cultures they fought. I think that shows a certain level of racism among the vast majority of his men. Most of them even divorced the persian wives he had had them marry as soon as he died

@@Cerockman it happened in a time where nobody was connected like we are today. Rewriting history in real time in 2023 shouldnt even be possible. we are constantly conncected with each other and see what happens around the world in real time. its not possible to do this in our day and age because we know its not true. we already have the facts. people back then didnt have that. if you make somewhat white that was black and wise versa, history books will not change what has been written down for a thousand years just because of some Netflix documentary.
