Yeah. It's like all those movies that portray ancient Israelites as white people with fair skin, light eyes, etc. Just absurd and blatantly racist. What decent person thinks Jesus, Mary, and Joseph looked like northern Europeans? It's so twisted that people have portraits of a pale-skinned, blonde and blue-eyed Jesus hanging on their walls. Entirely disrespectful. It's really beyond the pale (pun intended) to think that Cleopatra might have been mixed-race--father of Greek origin and mother with some amount of sub-Saharan ancestry. It's not like Nubians hadn't been traveling to Egypt for centuries and at one point conquered and ruled Egypt during the 25th Dynasty.

@@SunnyDaysAOK SMH LOL What's so sad, stupid, and hypocritical about these commenters is they are praising Cleopatra for the same thing Netflix has done. Cleopatra was a Greek, Macedonian that appropriated the Egyptian culture through invasion and those people in the land now calling themselves Egyptians are the genetic by-products of numerous invasions. Netflix could've easily chosen the grandmother of King Tut, Queen Tiye and looking at her image would've shut these "modern Egyptians" up.

Every single person who took part in changing Cleopatra into a black woman: "I'm more important than history, who the fuck is Cleopatra? I am more important than a historical queen and to demonstrate that I'm going to erase the real Cleo from history". It's pure power tripping from people with delusions of grandeur. Including the actress herself. Any sane actor would not want to take a role that insults history itself. Maybe she only did it for the paycheck maybe then I could understand. I would respect her more if she just said "I just did it for the money, I don't actually agree that the real Cleo was black" but she is defending this shit so fuck her. @@ricsim78 I can tell you were very emotional typing that response to my comment. I didn't mention anything about about the old Cleopatra movies. High emotions is the #1 factor for selective outrage and you're clearly guilty of it sir. The History Channel have a large catalogs of Egyptian documentaries dated in the late 80s, all of the 90s and 2000s. What did you see on the majority of those films white americans playing Egyptians. No one said a word. The first "Documentary" showing a black woman playing a white historic figure broke the internet. You say it's not about race? All you hear is "they just need to make it historically accurate" and I would agree. C'mon..the modern day Egyptians never cared for Cleopatra why now? Because if it was another studio behind the film they wouldn't care. So they use the guides of racism to vent their frustration, so they can make a case to sue Netflix. I read a biography of Cleopatra not too long ago. She was not a notable beauty, but was well-educated, charming, seductive, and intelligent. She came from a Macedonian family, descended from one of Alexander the Great's generals, which had been very inbred for several generations. The family (Ptolemies) was notable for killing close relatives in order to gain the throne. Cleopatra herself was forced to marry her younger brother, whom she later went to war with, and he ended up slain in battle. She seduced and had children with the Roman generals Julius Caesar and Mark Antony in order to gain power and to survive her siblings' plots. She probably fell in love with Marc Antony and they married. They both committed suicide when they lost the war against the first Roman emperor, Augustus, whose sister was Mark Antony's former wife, Octavia. Octavia later raised Marc Antony's children by Cleopatra.

Until DNA testing became affordable many American Blacks believed they had Native American in them. Same issue, their parents and grandparents had told them so. I remember KZbin being flooded by videos of these people getting their Ancestry results to find out they were 0% Native American and more often than not, part White. Not everything you’re family says is true. In reality their ancestors didn’t want to admit that their skin was lighter because they had White in them. Or their features were different than most Africans for the same reason. Native Americans we’re an acceptable scape goat since they obviously weren’t plantation and slaves owners. Ancestors of Black slaves don’t have any family records though (none going back to their African roots and most not even any of their family in America before the civil war), so most of the time they really didn’t know their origins. This Cleopatra thing is different though. It is very well documented and proven historical fact that she was Greek. Nobody questions that Mark Antony was Roman! What baffles me most though, is why not really claim their own heritage? There were and are amazing sub Saharan African cultures. The Kushites built more pyramids than the Egyptians. They were a powerful nation that even took over Egypt for a short period of time. Their surviving artwork and statues show them looking Black. Darker skin, different facial features, etc… Why not do a real documentary on them? Be proud of your own cultures and stop trying to change PROVEN history.

Flippin’ ‘eck, my classmates and I were taught about the Kushites over 50 years ago in school. When Alexander died, without an heir, his Generals carved up his empire between themselves: ¥ Ptolemy - Egypt ¥ Seleucus - Mesopotamia, and all of the East ¥ Antigonus - much of Asia Minor ¥ Lysimachus - Thrace, and ¥ Antipater - mainland Greece Kushite Kings who ruled Nubia and Ancient Egypt: ¥ Piye - 747-716 BCE ¥ Shabaqa (716-702 BCE) ¥ Shebitqu (702-690 BCE) ¥ Taharaqa (690-664 BCE), and ¥ Tanutamani (664 BCE) Amazing that I found this online in just a few minutes. The ironic thing about this statement is that the Anne Boleyn series is probably one of the most historically accurate depictions of that whole scenario, and at no point do they claim the race of the actress portraying her is meant to reflect the race of the actual Boleyn. It’s a historical drama series, and a drama is much different than a documentary. These are actors who are acting out a role. With Cleopatra however, they’ve gone explicitly out of their way to say “Cleopatra is definitively black and that is final,” in abject defiance of the actual truth. The Nubians did conquer and rule Egypt at one point. We know that Cleopatra's father was a Ptolemy but we don't know anything about her mother. Racial purity wasn't a thing because the concept of race as it is understood today did not exist then. Realistically, kings had concubines of different backgrounds. It's far worse when we see Jesus portrayed as a blonde, blue-eyed Scandinavian or the rest of the ancient Israelites portrayed by northern Europeans who look nothing like the indigenous people of the region. The Mizrahi Jews who did not migrate to Europe sure heck weren't considered white by the Ashkenazi Jews who founded modern Israel.
