I mean, Mark just used that same trope here for the exact same effect. I think "hatewatching" or laughing at a movie "so bad its good" only works if you are not invested into the actual story/universe. I actually love watching horrible adoptions of anime and games and stuff that I love, like the Netflix Death Note series, one of the worst things ever and I've watched every hate review if it because all the hate is warranted and I find it far more entertaining to listen to someone rant about how broken and awful the movie is and how much they hate it and compare it to the original because it's just fun and entertaining and at the end of the day I get a good laugh and relax. I do this for other series too like Dragon Ball Evolution or M. Night's Avatar or even the Star Wars sequals which are all horrible parodies of the original and far worse in every way but still Infinitley entertaining listening to people rant about how bad they are. It's just a form of entertainment really and even with series that I absolutely adore such as every one mentioned, it doesn't matter if I am or aren't invested, if I find the content to be entertaining then I'll enjoy it.

I feel like I'm half qualified on this; I watched the 2003 anime around when it came out, though I knew it deviated from the manga halfway through. I then watched half of Brotherhood when it came out but never knew the ending or really different parts, so the 3rd live action film was basically all new to me. I thought it was terrible, and all the usual issues with these films aside, I hated the way the story ended. The whole dwarf thing was weird, and the story just became too big and cosmic or biblical in a way. So the result is that I prefer the 2003 story. I think actually reading the manga or finishing Brotherhood would soften my opinions on it, but safe to say that learning from the shitty live action film that a blob man reaches through a door in space in the end isn't the best way to consume FMA 😂

Perhaps not a popular take, but I wish the film series had just taken the base concept and early events, paced them out appropriately and ran with it in its own direction much like the 2003 anime did, at least over what we got given in the live action films. Then can I at the least give them points for creativity. Whilst 2003 FMA did not adhere to the source material beat by beat (Mostly because the manga was not finished) It at least took those early chapters and delivered its own interpretation in a pace that felt appropriate with an emotional pay-off at the end, given the material they were given and the time restraints they were up against. To me, the FMA movies just felt like live action clipshows, I don't know how else to put it.

You can really delve into the themes of the evils of organised religion, the fanaticism of cults and the rebuilding of society after te ravages of war. How one slip-up in a theocratic regime can lead to full scale revolution. That was the film I wanted to see, not what we got.

The utter respect for all of these movies, franchises, manga and comic, down to the music used during the breakdowns and explorations of plot points (huge shout out to the One Piece Wano arc videos having Oboro Muramasa soundtrack selections, the Heaven songs from that game are breathtaking)... It's hard to put in all into words, but just want to say that you guys put tons of work and effort into these projects, and deserve all the love and recognition that been building all this time. I'm going to watch a movie with my family and draw! Man, watching this and the previous review now makes me so thankful for the Live Action One Piece. It does a great job creating its own take on Oda's story, while also still keeping true to it's source material. They didn't put an ugly prosthetic nose on Usopp, or draw unconvincing curly eyebrows on Sanji, but the spirit of those two is captured perfectly in the actors, all because everyone involved actually gave a damn about One Piece, and put out a great product. And a little fun fact: Mackenyu, the actor who played Scar in these movies, is now Zoro in LA-OP, so glad to see him moving up in the world.

After they meet father and ending when they head to brigs. 3. After kimbly's fight with Edward in the mines. 4. everyone getting ready for the day of reckoning. Bam, easy 3-4 arcs they could've used and fit in almsot everything. Probably best to do this in a 4 movie segment.

You know, this feeling that Mark had in the face of hatewatching is something that has been bothering me for a long time in art and entertainment discussion circles around the internet. About this obsession we have to scrape the bottom of the barrel in search of the worst of the worst. Works that normally you would dedicate half an hour of your life to, realize how low quality it is and put it aside, making better things with your life. But increasingly we're paying attention to that, in a post-ironic eagerness to feed our cynicism, validating the take about "art is going downhill and we need to guard ourselves against the pitfalls of cheap entertainment." This is pathetic, I'm not gonna lie. It's the same feeling behind habits like doomscrolling timelines and more timelines of social media, and which makes us more and more miserable. It blinds us to all the other fantastic works people create, creating the cruel habit of lying to ourselves about their existence. I think this is where I see value in a metaphorical "go touch grass", where "touching grass" can be translated into stop being stubborn and see that the world of entertainment and art isn't the doom and gloom that you insist on believing, and allow yourself to appreciate the beauty of these works that are at our disposal. Or you don't even have to dedicate your time to it. Go enjoy the good things in life.

I don't agree, I watch bad stuff reviews for entertainment value, at thr end of the day I have a good laugh at the bad thing and have fun and then I move on. I never feel bad for it, thr mog I'd do is just feel disappointed in whoever created such a terrible thing, but it doesn't distract me from enjoying the good things that I like either, I never make myself feel bad and I always make plenty of time for the good things. There's nothing bad about turning your brain off for a while every now and then just to relax you know. I also don't have social media and am not a fan of news or politics or doom and gloom stuff, too boring for me.
@josephjatta5225
@josephjatta5225 Ай бұрын
Spot on. This highlights a larger problem within our parasocial digital/online 'society'. And media and entertainment is both where we go to in order to nurse this obsession/addiction while those same mediums themselves/ and or their creator's take advantage of our willingness to consume anything the internet has attached warranted nostalgia to a bygone era of quality art/entertainment to. We live in an oversaturated quantity over quality era of just about everything where attention is the asset that is sold on the internet, a virtual town-square many stay chronically online in to freely thrust their attention to for quick 'cheap' dopamine fixing entertainment and distractions. They'll continue to churn out lazy formulaic remakes and milk our attention dry as long as there are is an internet and people ready to give their attention to just about anything with a big name slapped across it and money to be made off of our nostalgia.

I really appriciate the end of this review. I usually am pretty good at avoiding things that are designed to make me angry made by companies and individuals who thrive on the dollars that that generates. But recently one really, truly, shittily written comics run made me so unreasonably fucking angry. I hate that it made me angry, I don't like being angry. I won't be naming the comic because it doesn't deserve attention even. Its a run about a character and property I find near and dear to my heart so the anger it generated hit really deep. So I find it hard to stop being mad at something that stupid even though it is that stupid. But what you say about the end of this review really struck me. Perhaps because it's a strange coincidence a random youtube video recommended to me makes such a statement that relates to something that so recent that happened to me. This is why Fullmetal Alchemist: Conqueror of Shamballa is the best movie. You can't take a TV series stretched out over hours and hours and compress major emotional and storybeats into just a few minutes. If you want to make a movie based on an anine IP, give the movie its own original story that branches off from the anime itself and keep it self-contained.

not true. you could make an anime into a movie if you actually know what you’re trying to adapt. for example from manga to anime movie, Akira has to make changes to tell a story fitting of its medium. From comic to live action, Watchmen went through some story and style changes FMA could have been broken into a few “arcs” that would best serve a cinematic run time while being self contained. not impossible lol *edit 4:07 lol i know TNM thinks fma can’t be broken into arcs, but functionally any story can, even if it doesn’t appear so. for example, movie 1 is about the elric brothers, secrets of human transmutation, church plot and finally chimera plot. Movie 2 focuses on the homunculus, Scar and ends with a fight between all 3. final movie focuses on the snow army plot building up to the fight with Father. we know some things happen off screen and some battles can be tweaked. it’s not impossible and if you’re focused on telling the best story as opposed to pleasing the most people, it’ll probably work..

For so long now i have been feeling negative emotions towards a lot of things, and it hit a breaking point recently, to the point where i finally had to step back, and take a break from certain games and media. at the same time, i finally started to watch a show that i have been meaning to for a long time, and it helped bring positivity that i needed. I didnt think much on it at the time till i watched this video.

Mackenyu has been popping off with anime live actions recently. Enishi in Rurouni Kenhin, Scar in FMA, Seiya in Knights of the Zodiac, and Zoro in One Piece. I wonder who he's going to play next.

I love the conclusion that mark comes to at the end of the vid. There certainly is enjoyment to be had in hate watching and laughing at something bad. But that doesn't hold a candle into diving into something new that you end up liking.

I think hate watching is perfectly fine and productive. It a bonding experience for you and your friends watching, it makes you think creatively “why didn’t the movie do this instead because of x y and z?” So I think your argument is better placed towards the film itself rather than the act of hate watching. If a new animated fullmetal alchemist show came out today that was a scene for scene replica of the original would it be worth reviewing? I think that is the issue you are hinting at here, this movie is treading a line of hardly being able to call itself a movie because it is just repeating something else with no creative spin. I do believe you made the right choice by protesting against this lack of orgininality. If an anime wants to become a live action film it either needs to 1.Create a whole new story set in that same world with the same themes or 2.use live action in a way that animation can’t such as subtle facial expressions from the actors, practical effects. So by not doing either this film fails to prove itself as a piece of art and instead shows it’s true form of being a cash grab, clip show of the original. As you said in your video there is no hate towards the people who worked on it, rather the executives and producers who demand this be a quick cash grab

@mohammedsami6907
@mohammedsami6907 Жыл бұрын
Honestly, i still think criticism is fine, its still cool to dissect terrible films on why theyre bad, and hate watching can be occasionaly fun. But I dont think disliking that is the issue here. Its that this, as well as a lot of other types of negative content, is the prevailing type on content on the internet. Its really popular and overdone, to the point where it seems like a massive unproductive circlejerk, whose primary objective is to get views and engagment, along with trying to engage in current conversation. Hell, Velma is a great example. Every moron with a youtube channel was tripping over themselves to do brave and stunning thing of telling you that the bad show... is bad. No one has a unique take because there isnt one to make. But its a trend to chase and chase it they did. Its gotten to a point that there was talk of a second season because the first managed to get this many viewers, hell more than the last of us. People hatewatched a property so bad that it got mpre popular than a good show. They can fluff it up all they want; claim its to hold entertainment accountable or punish cheap media. Although those are valid reasons, they are mostly minor reasons that are thrown out there to make the job of circlejerking over bad videogame/show/movie/anime seem noble and intellectual and artistic. Most of the time its to generate clout.

Really appreciated the fact that you looked at both the good and the bad sides of this trilogy. Anime LAs are almost never done right and while this was nothing great either, it still isn't the worst we've seen (looking at you AOT). I'm glad you took the time to mention the casting and costume designs with the right research. I think it's essential to mention that the cast actually consists of some of the most talented and in-demand people in the industry such as Yamada Ryosuke as Ed, Arata Mackenyu as Scar, Honda Tsubasa as Winry, Dean Fujioka as Ron etc. And while these movies definitely needed at least 5 parts to do justice to the source material, it very obviously wasn't possible to do production wise. However, it is still worth appreciating how much effort the staff and team put into these. As someone who regularly follows some of the actors involved, it was wholesome to see how much this project meant to them and how hard they tried to bring out the best possible finished product. It is unfortunate that it has numerous flaws but despite acknowledging them, I'm glad the good parts were still enjoyable on their own.

It ended up very emotional, way more than I intended. I needed a break from my own head, so I watched this for a laugh, and then... then that ending. It hits. I'm going to share my story. it's not worth just sitting on it for no real reason. So thank you for giving me a little perspective when I really needed it.

Yes. YES! Excellent message. I have never understood the idea of doing something you don't enjoy because you can. And as somone that works retail that mention of negativity spreading is so true. You can give a customer the BEST experience in the world and maybe they tell two people. Slight them by accident even a little or tell them they can't have their way? Every place they can shout they will, instantly. That negative energy can be used so much better, that time can be used to... Do ANYTHING else. Like a certain popular game liked to make a comment on about doing things cause you can or doing things you don't enjoy or are not fun just to see everything, "Don't you have anything BETTER to do?" Good on you Mark. Times to precious and never pauses and can end suddenly. Let's fill that time with positivity instead.

As a huge fan of both anime productions, some of the games, and the manga, I was willing to give live action a chance but 15 minutes into the first movie I gave up. I couldn’t do it anymore either. After refusing to watch any of these movies, I can really relate to the message of this video. I don’t have to go chasing waterfalls, I can stick to the rivers and the lakes that I’m used to. As for what to do next, I’d love to see you guys cover more mature stories. There’s plenty of great manga out there that have been proverbially sitting on the shelf for years. One of my favorites to recommend is Hanazawa Kengo’s “I am a Hero”. It’s DARK dark but the characters are real, the painstakingly detailed art is fantastically creepy and the story is riveting. I believe it is a under-read, under appreciated classic, and it is best experienced “100% Blind”.

Mark I would really love to see you speak on the One Piece films. Not just the newer high-quality ones that everybody knows, but at least some of the old ones too-if not all of them. I don’t believe there are any videos out there on the old movies that are of the same high production and thought/effort quality that you put out. It would be a great introduction to them for some of the community, and impactful because they’re hard to find and watch. Plus, I know I’m a rare case here but, for people like me with vision disabilities that make reading subs extremely difficult if not impossible at times it would be a great way to get the story told and themes explored

I have a suggestion. Pretty good one too. 86| Eighty-Six. By Asato Asato Easily one of the best pieces of military science fiction I have encountered in a while. It bears within a message on finding a reason to go on in a a world without hope. Some points about PTSD (not Violet Evergarden garden though) Offers up some salient thoughts on the midcentury Germans (20th century that is) (hilariously casting them as Franco-Russian) And ultimately Lena is best girl. The anime covers the first three volumes of the light novels.

The thing about adaptations is that they *have* to do something that the original needed, otherwise they're boring retreads at best or trainwreck insults to the original at worst. For some, it's skipping pages upon pages of unnecessary detail (looking at you, Hunt for Red October), for others it's the actors' performance (Princess Bride comes to mind), but in every case of a good adaptation they have *something* that sets them apart. The Fullmetal movies have a lot of technical problems, of course, yet the biggest thing that ruined their chances was that they bungled the single most important thing that made the manga and anime great. The characters. We can look past some PS2 cgi, or some wonky costume design, or a bit of off-kilter dialogue, or some pacing issues, or... okay, we can overlook a bunch of stuff, but only if they nail the spirit of the characters. You can't fit in everything without the movie being 30 hours long, yet if you sacrifice what made the audience love the characters, you've already lost. They did nothing that the original needed, they sacrificed everything that made the original great, they didn't put in the technical polish, and it all bit them in the ass.

I do agree with the last point that just hate watching something and just being negative can be draining and contributes very little in the grand scheme of things. The ending of the video was poignant and I appreciate you not taking the easy path when it comes to lambasting this movie. However, I really wanted to hear your take on the two animated movies Conqueror or Shamballa and Sacred Star of Milos. Not because they are bad movies, but because they are also part of the FMA world and it could give you a chance to see what has changed since the midpoint of the 2003 anime as well. What I am saying is, shame those Netflix movies ruined your passion when it comes to watching more FMA because I would've love to hear more about some of the other stuff not yet covered.

1) Still commenting for Yu Yu Hakusho 2) The Conqueror of Shambala is a good follow up to the 2003 serires. 3) For your existential crisis, I would have to disagree with the equivocation of hate-watching with genuine critique. For more on #3, there is actually a lack of genuine critique online, and I would say that your issue is not that there is no more to say; rather, there is no more you could say. This is to say, Critique is not supposed to be negative. Critique may utilize negativity; however, Critique is a failed critique if it doesn't produce some form of positivity. When a film like this comes along, it pushes us to our limits to find that positivity of critique. The positiivity doesn't have to be what they did correction, but finding what could be done better and making those around us better. The difficulty of a critique of this kind is finding that which isn't hateful from the product one loves, but rather to be a guiding voice to those who need it. There is a servere lack of critique online, and a gross overabundance of bad and false critiques.

LOL! Good ending. Ending it on a positive is quite the rebellion. Go enjoy the weekend and then dive into another of those wonderful series sitting on your shelf or still in their packaging that you haven't yet explored. I don't get to explore as much anime as I would like--and some aspects of certain ones I actively dislike meaning I would probably never pick them up or at best I would start and never finish them--but with your reviews I can experience these stories. Thank you for that! I was going to comment that "you suffer so we don't have to" but that's not fair to you. You shouldn't suffer for other people's art. So don't. I've enjoyed poking fun of media, I don't view what I do as 'hate watching' though since I always try to appreciate the art they made when it's there and not devalue what is on screen. There are people working hard on a lot, that extends to bad anime etc. I do think you have a legitimately solid point though when you say you can virtually just be watching good media instead and not going on and on about stuff that won't matter though I'd say there's also an appeal to watching the bad to appreciate the good even more.

Speaking of rebelling against this culture of negativity by fighting an uphill battle to train by KZbin feed. I do this by interacting more with positive media and decreasing any activity toward negative media. I mark videos with titles and thumbnails (where the entire point of the video is to hate on something without adding anything meaningful) as 'Not Interested'. If whole channels are dedicated to hating on various pieces of art, then mark it as 'Don't Recommend Channel'. I also keep the same energy for KZbinrs that put major spoilers on the titles and thumbnails of their videos.
