What many are not realising, is that Borgov wants out. This is pointed many times in the show, and Beth is his way out. This is why he adjourns right before an OBVIOUS move to predict and "pretend to offer a draw" just to show URSS that he tried really hard

@@FirearesJR I agree with you. Beth was amazing and this time was on top form but I some times think Vasily Bor may have deliberately pulled back just to give Beth a chance. I read that Soviet chess players were under tremendous pressure. I be he wanted out too.

@@zakk6068 Well, at the time, the USSR was pretty extreme. A case in point is that when Mark Taimanov lost 0 - 6 to Bobby Fischer in the 1971 Candidates tournament, they - the Soviets - took away Taimanov's salary and forbade him from travelling overseas.

i think that knowing "the way Borgov conducted himself" makes the scene even better. by analysing the game we can see inside turmoil that Borgov goes through and it makes for a better character bc so far except for the coming last scene he has been depicted as a cold calculator but the game reflects the whole turn to a (a bit stereotypical) graceful russian chess grandmaster

Yes and no. We're mostly given a cold calculating impression of him, but he's always regarded Beth in a very human and respectful way. When his buddies were trashing on her in the elevator in Mexico, he cuts them off with "She's a orphan, a survivor. She's like us. Losing is not an option for her." Even with all her issues and her time being publicly messy, he never underestimated her. Just had to point it out because I _looooove_ that tiny little nuanced shade of gray it adds to his characterization.

It is a variation on the game 12:40 Ivanchuk versus Wolfe in 1993 13:26 Fair point: Borgov offering a draw. He is basically telling Beth: My position is bad, please accept my draw offer 14:14 Hikaru having a slight dig at Anish Giri?

@@lordandreus208 At that moment 14:14 Hikaru said If your name starts with A and ends with G, then you might feel scared and offer a draw here. Anish Giri is known for someone who has drawn many games against top players. Reason people say this is because he drew all 12 games when he played in the Candidates many years ago. Hence Anish is known for being someone who draws too many games. But this reputation is unfair on Anish as some of his games are very exciting. Recently, just a couple of weeks ago in January 2023, he won Tata Steel for the first time! On his road to victory, he beat Magnus Carlsen !

@HoracioFdzG
@HoracioFdzG 3 жыл бұрын
I thought the same. Though, I thought the draw offer on the start in which her opponent resigns the next move was quite accurate. Its a very common tactiv used by low level and amateurish players, specially kids and younger players. So, even if it was insulting, it quite represented real life. While the world top player doing it does not do justice to the world of chess.

I thought this draw offer in particular was supposed to be significant because of the emphasis they put on borgov never offering a draw, and telling beth to watch for signs of him wanting to talk / leave the ussr during the match that she may have been able to pick up on. I think this draw was supposed to be the sign from Borgov that they mention in the show since it was out of character for Borgov and inappropriate for the level of game
@Artonox
@Artonox 3 жыл бұрын
pretty much lol. I could understand what Carlson is on about though. Both players can see who is winning or not at that professional level and could likley gauge how far the gap is well, and therefore knowing that you lost yet ask for a draw is just silly.
