There was something special about this movie that resonated with me.. deeply. I was moved by this movie. This movie is so incredibly dear to me now. Surprised to see so many mixed reviews concerning this movie. I’d go as far to say this movie would be on top of my top ten movies of the year.

Extremely enjoyable film , simple British storytelling of a true story focussing on a small but strong cast that were second only to the story’s one true find . I find it bizarre that an earlier review questions the point of including Lily James’ character , I would say her character was pivotal given that Peggy Piggot ( Cecily Margaret Guido ) at 27 years of age was indeed on the dig , an educated woman in very much a mans world that went on to have a renowned career in archeology for 60+ years. Infuriating that anyone , particularly in this case a woman, should make the assumption that the character has been added for the aesthetics

Ah, Carey Mulligan, one of the most underrated actresses of her generation. I'm here for any of her movies.

Ralph and Carey really outdid themselves! Loved the history behind this movie, and as a lover of museums I will be going to see this! As I haven’t! Also I cried so much the last 30 mins! Carey had me!😫🥺.. I love that they inserted Lily into this, at first I didn’t understand why but I ended up loving her character as well! She was great! Simon Stone outdid himself with this one!

The "explanation" offered here is just stupid - this movie in its entirety is a meditation on death that takes place in a graveyard - start there. The ancient burial underscores - as Shakespeare so aptly noted - that we are all actors on a stage for only a brief while, and we must all make of life what we can while we can - we will all inescapably share the fate of the grand but now anonymous interred king. The river in the background is a metaphor for the currents that carry us all forward to our ends; the soldiers who will soon die, Mrs. Pretty - who is already dying, the death of Peggy's stultifying marriage, et al. Only Peggy and her soon-to-be RAF pilot lover Rory dare to swim against the current (note that he was warned against the current when he jumps in to attempt the rescue of the crashed pilot trainee) to grab what life has dangled before them - but even they are now gone to those who watch their story unfold. Even the boy Robert, whose speech to his mother (soon to be taken from him) in the excavated boat is the shining nugget of the film will take that flight to the stars he alludes to. All lives are ephemeral - and no treasure can buy any of us even one more day...

This movie on Netflix is a Must See!!! It is one of the best movies I have ever seen of archeological significance. The actors are amazing and the direction and photography set the mood of England perfectly. The producers have a sure and certain winner, the actors awards and the director and cast should all receive Oscars, in my opinion, such as it is. Keep some tissues close and happily weep at the tragedy and love they project so well. Don't miss this movie, if you enjoy fine drama that shows the joys and pain of life of those times; along with the thrill of discovering the continuity of history the screen writers have brought back to life so well! :)

Why does the ending of this need to be explained? This is not a mystery/thriller

The Dig tells the true story of the discovery of the greatest national treasure in British history. Found in Sutton Hoo Suffolk it also authentically captures the local dielect. It could have revealed more of the underlying story as well as it's emphasis on who would receive credit for the find. Not overly dramatic but a most interesting and enjoyable watch.

Get your Basic facts right. Suffolk not Sussex... Anglo Saxon not Saxon. There are important differences

Fiennes is excellent, as usual and his accent perfect. My family are from Norfolk. Beautiful photography and a poignant story. Presumably the young archaeologist is gay, and the split is more of a mutual acceptance that the young couple must go their separate ways. We see him going upstairs with his young male colleague at the Inn. The Sutton Hoo find was of landmark importance in our understanding of the Dark Ages, which were maybe not so dark after all.

Loved it! Kept me interested as characters and relationships unfolded with the advent of WWII as the backdrop. Highlights an individual's passion for learning despite earnings, love for one's child, and romantic love, including when to let someone go for their own happiness. Sweet, poignant ! Highly recommend!

There are so many incorrect statements made in this piece. The dig was in Suffolk, not Sussex. The finds were from the 7th century not the 6th. Basil Brown was not an amateur archaeologist etc. Please check your facts before sending out a piece.

I enjoyed the film very much. Strong performances by the two main characters. When a story is interesting and historical and beautifully photographed as The Dig why did they feel the need to include Lily James’s character in the film. Very weak and unnecessary in my opinion. Can’t wait to visit the British Museum and see what they discovered.

Love the English Mounds. Thrilled by their existence. Love the cast! S l o w..moving .but devoted follower of the era before WWII, it’s Nicely done. Gently done with kind rewards to History, fearful of coming War, honesty, curiosity, respect towards truth, and...a gentle escape to a frightening time.

There was so much good press about this film that I expected great entertainment. But alas for me it was a dull and surprisingly uninteresting watch. I kept waiting for some drama to move it to a faster pace but it just meandered about via a swamp of boring direction. Not enough drama is made of the discovery, there are some wasteful and super-unnecessary sub plots like a weirdly shallow marital-bust up and the only attempt at drama was a cave-in with a miraculous outcome and rush to put tarpaulins over the dig in a rain storm. That’s it!

you may be more at home reading a comic. your definition of "entertainment" is clearly one dimensional...at most.
