I like 'Troll' and the previous film 'Trollhunter'. I can see why JRR Tolkien was interested in European folklore. There are so many stories in different regions.
@brotherknight9484
@brotherknight9484 Жыл бұрын
Tolkien was mostly interested in Germanic Myth. Though I suppose you do find commonalities across Europe considering every culture and religion was related. Tolkien's objective however, was to create a sort of mythology for the English people. Arthurian Legend was certainly British Mythology but it wasn't English.
@hound3000

@@brotherknight9484 I know "King Arthur" is probably a French-influenced British myth. If I'm not mistaken, the story of Turin Turambar was inspired by a Norwegian or Finnish folklore story (I think it was on the latter). Anyway, the idea of trolls and them turning to stone after being exposed to direct sunlight was taken from Norwegian folklore, isn't it?

Yeah, you really got the sense in 'Trollhunter' that the government was doing an almost SCP like thing where they were doing everything they could to contain the various kinds of trolls for both the trolls' and humanity's own good. To keep them both apart so that humanity wouldn't just destroy them like we normally seem too eager to do.

Yeah, since Marvel has sort of c*cked up Thor, good on them to portray their culture a bit more. Wonder if Africa does it as well after Wakanda Forever. Although it is myth, I think Christianity was used to dispel tribal myth/sorcery into o divinity and man being the centre and his extension into the divine vs. bearing witness to occult symbolism which was feared in that time. but Troll Hunter was AWESOME!!!

The materialisation of earth spirits as our own culture has increasingly materialised is an interesting one. A similar thing happened with demons and Djinn, both of which were terms for nature spirits or elementals until the monotheists got ahold of them and worked them into their own pantheons. The efforts of modern authors and creators to return them to their roots (think of all the giants and trolls in Tolkien, and the daemons in Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials) seems like a noble effort to me. Thanks for the insight guys

I notice that the interest is gaining as many are combating trans humanism which his the new religion of progressivism. I think it is intrinsic to many cultures to explore their past as the "futurist cult" i.e. vaccines, gender affirmation , etc bears down on them in a particularly forceful way. So interesting, because BELIEF is key and now we are curiously challenging politics as belief.

This looks like a potential franchise where a prequel makes sense. Living in Japan, I could easily see the Godzilla parallels, but troll myths pre-date Toho movies by a wide margin, and the movie was fun anyway. I'd be for sequels/prequels.

I notice the similarities of Troll mythology brought to light here with many theories of the Civilization that Hancock and others suppose were wiped out in the Younger Dryas impact. The ancient remnants were often described all over the ancient world as red haired giants (Denisovan some claim). Many mounds in America of the Hopewell age also had recorded giant remains along with normal sized humans. Curious connection...

In Finland we have this Easter tradition where witches go from house to house to do spells of good fortune and health for the household. These witches are called "trulli". A more common word for witch is "noita". Finns - as well as Scandinavians/"vikings" I believe - used to attach different magical and spiritual properties into different trees. Willow brings health. The trulli also give decorated willow branches to the people of the house. I would imagine the original idea was that the spell was bound into the branch. It's quite similar to Halloween really. Because atleast in modern times it's children who dress up as trulli and they get chocolate and candy and earlier money as pay for the blessing. People still do it but really don't think about it as casting spells but just cute "poems" kids recite.

I loved the opening scene of the movie and loved the mythology aspect in it but I couldn't understand how an archeologist was picked by the prime minister just like that, and I wished the movie would be more serious and dial down the comedy. I also loved the CGI of the TROLL and loved the cinematic shots, it was fantastic. I liked the TROLL backstory and Gard B. Eidsvold character and the interaction between them (I shed some tears on a certain scene). When the movie went full kaiju, I liked the military! usually the military in kaiju movies are very basic they just keep shooting in the movie you can feel them hopeless they don't know what to do as they realized weapons can't kill the TROLL. I wish to see another TROLL movie to continu this beautiful mythology.

"Troll Hunter" is absolutely wonderful! Watched it at random and was amazed. It's about the existence of trolls in the modern era, sure. But about halfway through it morphs into the poignant tale of a lonely man with maybe the world's worst job. Not sure it's got a classic structure: character intro, rising tension, conflict, climax and denouement, but it is uniquely enjoyable to watch, and the locations are stunning. Top recommend!

The stop stepping on the main character by the Troll because it hears a noise is very enjoyable. Also the long dialogue repeating the same thing is just trilling. Oh oh and the video feed you see from looking at ppl looking at it, their faces just a masterpiece. Don't forget hey a tank doesn't work maybe a gun will, this is just well written. But really putting a skull of its baby family member (I guess), like bait on a truck, cause after 100s of years doing nothing it's memory is great, now that's original how they did it, I don't know, I was in and out of it because it was sooooo entertaining. I laughed at how I didn't laugh so that counts right..... Then a documentary in this video on Trolls that wasn't in the movie at all, maybe if that was a back in time movie. It's interesting that in Swedish "trolla" is a verb, referring to doing magic. A magician is a "trollkarl" (magic man). A "troll" is a magical being, the size of the large rocks you find in the our woods (left from the ice age), and sometimes trolls in the folk lore are the size of giants. Trolls are large, slow, dangerous and not very smart. Although the verb and the name of the being are almost the same they have very different connotations in the Swedish language today and a modern troll is usually a much cuter and smaller creature, similar to the trolls in Disney's movie Brave. Not slow or stupid or dangerous.

In the explanation it sounds like in "don't wake the trolls" Christianity seems to have taken the trolls in Scandinavia to be like the Celts take the Fey. Like an umbrella word for anything supernatural. It also sounds like they didn't want people to do anything either akin to druidic/shamanic. I take the video as an exemplefication of how opposed were paganism vs. christianity. Frankly even today, there are still plenty to hold more paganist beliefs. Thank you both. I appreciate the ability to learn about the culture. (I'm half Irish, so I likened it to something I could interpret but I imagine other cultures would be able to say the same)

Awesome video. Great movie too! From what I gathered listening to the history of trolls it seems (in my estimation) that perhaps the 'truth' of it would be that when the Christians came along they perceived that some Scandinavians were performing magical feats by use of spirits and/or demons. The word 'troll' being an umbrella term for spirits, people who conjure spirits & magic performed using spirits. As both magic and divination are forbidden in the bible the Christians forbid it by law. The term 'waking a troll' would refer to divining or raising spirits/demons. Over time these spirits would be represented by the monsters we now know, perhaps by Christians as propoganda to scare people from meddling with them or perhaps by Scandinavians as a way of romanticising and remembering the old ways.

Me too. I noped out when she was in one of the Troll's giant foot print with a UV black light looking for "signs of life" or something along those lines. She shines this little hand held light in the middle of the footprint, says, "Nope, no life..." There were other "I like science," moments but that was just too much. Granted its a movie about a giant troll, but my suspension of disbelief could tolerate the Troll or "the science," not both.

Personally I always found Norse Mythology to be the most fascinating!(Though Shinto and Yoruba mythology are interesting)

I thought a troll one of those people that respond to your post by contradicting you, telling you that you're stupid, without adding anything to the conversation.
