I actually finished rewatching S1 in preparation for S2 and the reaction is because she was the Heartrender they were supposed to meet via the Conductor to help them break into the Little Palace. Last the Crows heard of Nina she'd been kidnapped by Fjerdans.

@@daniellecox4579 I wasn't confused by the reaction, I knew they'd have a special reaction to hearing her name, I just thought they would have met each other and been introduced on the ship; she overheard Kaz say they need a heartrender and she seemed interested. Sea voyages usually take a long time, especially using old sailing ships like they have in this world. So they were on a ship together for multiple days, maybe a week or more, and she never introduced herself to them?

From what I gathered in this scene, it seems like she has already met Kaz and had made a deal with him aka, Kaz had already decided to let her join them. In this scene, Kaz had called her to introduce them to other crows. If we're talking strictly show wise, I guess Nina must have been careful and she probably observed them for a while. After she figured out Kaz was the leader, she probably approached him, unless he noticed her studying them and approached her himself.
