Gilles Villeneuve died when I was 12. The passion was gone! I should not follow a sport where your idol can die.... especially not for a pre-teen kid certainly. Senna became my new idol when I saw him racing F3 cars in 1984. But it was not the same. I either grew up quickly after Gilles' death or because Senna was not driving for Ferrari. When he died, I was old enough to understand it. Jacques Villeneuve brought some passion back to me even though he drove for my most hated team Williams. It was something about the old Ferrari fans should do. I supported him for a single season against my beloved Ferrari. I became a Shumacher fan after Jacques Villeneuve won that World Championship. It was a closure for me. While Schumacher was great, he also had the best car and was unchallenged for at least two seasons. Then, the sport basically died down. Vettel, Hamilton and Verstappen were all talented, but they also had the best cars. Some of those championships were "won" after the first round. We knew no one could catch them. For young people, I don't really get why people still follow that sport. Senna won three World Champion with 8, 6 and 7 wins in those seasons.

So looking forward to this series. I had the honour and pleasure of meeting and talking with Ayrton in the pits at Silverstone a few times, whilst the teams were undertaking tyre testing before the British Grand Prix's of 90/91&92. He was an absolute gentleman and would always stand and chat during breaks and after the sessions. Oh, and I was just a very lucky F1 fan who had a friend who could get me 'press passes' for those events. For me, F1 has never been the same since that fateful weekend at Imola.

If I wasn’t at home watching I was at the track with him causing trouble in the garage/pits… I was 9 years old for that Imola weekend, I remember watching it with my dad and remember him tell me about Roland’s crash. For anyone who watched Top Gear, the one time Geremy Clarkson Didn’t crack a joke was when they did the tribute on Aryton Senna. From being a fierce competitor to getting out of his car to try and save a fellow racer. No one has come to race in the rain with as much skill as Senna. I respect drivers before and after. and he was a greater man out of the car. Paying for poor kids hospital treatment (with non disclosures for no publicity). His staff on his farm/ranch & other properties all got a free house, college education for their kids & got a share of the estate profits - a co-operative & profit related pay before there was such a thing. He set up loads of other charitable things under the radar too. The Ayrton Senna Foundation was being set up when he died & has changed the life of so many kids in Brazil. That's his true legacy. He faced adversity with courage (he was the foreign outsider when he came racing to the UK & beat them all). The resilience to never give up despite the odds is a great example for kids too. His family weren't always wealthy & he knew to take nothing for granted - that 's why he worked with the mechanics before & after every race throughout his career (from Malcolm 'Puddie' Pudden in Formula Ford/F3000 to Gordon Murray at Mclaren & David Brown at Williams, he went over the spec of the car & it's set-up, analysing the data at every race). He was the mechanics driver in every team he was in.

For a man who grew up seeing the two legends of that time Senna and Prost, just to see this teaser made me goosebumps. That was an incredible time for Formula 1 and also dangerous because tomorrow is 1st of may, 2024, 30th years has passed of that dark weekend in Imola when Roland Ratzenberger and Ayrton Senna died may their souls rest in peace.

This scene is legendary. Senna had a 40-second advantage over Riccardo Patrese, but gearbox problems worsened, and Senna had to use only sixth gear in the final laps. But he resisted and won for the first time at home.

I'm not an F1 fan, but I remember only getting excited about this legend when I was a kid. I really look forward to watching this insight into the great man's life. An inspiration to push yourself to the limits. However, in the end, this was his downfall. To die on a hill. You can either live life playing safe, not pushing yourself, not reaching your full potential, not being fulfilled. Or you can go out doing the thing you truly love. It's similar to loving someone and losing them, or never loving at all.
